    WD Studio reviews

640GB My Passport Studio Portable Hard Drive is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than I expected! As a photographer with the never ending problem of storage of large RAW images, especially on the go, this Western Digital product solves the problem and more. Having several small dimension external hard drives that look alike, I never can remember what is stored on them but this portable hard drive gives me the chance to label the contents, the date, or whatever I want to label it and it also gives me the current amount of storage space remaining. All I have to do is plug it into the firewire port of my laptop and I am good to go. I am spoiled now. I will probably only get this kind of external drive in the future.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice drive, after you ditch the software Nice case/ design. Large capacity. Quiet. FireWire800. Cons - Software. Got tired of it poppig up every time I plugged it in. Removed it. By removing software, it locks the main ink label at the top, and you can't see the size display any more. They tied the e-label with their intrusive software, rather than letting a simple app edit it in the background. Dumb. Cords are too short as well. Frustrating software because there is NO manual. I recommend this drive if you find it attractive, need firewire, but can live without the silly software and size remaining indicator. Could have been 4 stars from this WD fanboy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from HORRENDOUS This is the slowest, most unstable drive I've ever owned. The FireWire 800 port must be there for decoration, because it doesn't work (I bought two, based on favorable reviews and neither works); and via USB, the fastest data transfer rate I can get on my Core i7 MacBook Pro is about 3MB/sec. Pathetic!! I'm going back to Seagate, for good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Drives I am a photographer traveling for a month photographing. I bought 2 of these drives. .... I set them up as mirror drives just in case one drops in a river/ fails/ etc. They are a great option for travel as they are bus powered. For drives that are bus powered, they are very fast, even when using USB instead of firewire800.If you have more than one, the eInk displays are a must. It saves me from having to keep rewriting the drive numbers with a sharpee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money! Western Digital makes great hard drives. And if you ever have a problem with one, you can contact them and they will send you a new one! Their customer service is superb! This 640 GB portable hard drive is great! I like the little window feature that tells you the name of the drive, and how much space is left on it. It's right there, at a glance, which is extremely useful if you have a bunch of these portables like I do! The backup software that comes on this drive is great, too! It allows for a backup, either manual or automatic, that looks at only what has changed since the last backup and only saves that information. That's a great space saver and even greater time saver! I highly recommend this product, or any Western Digital hard drive!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a great product! I use this to store and access HD video to edit on my MacBook using iMovie and Final Cut Express. It's the first time I've had an external drive already formatted for Mac, so it was ready to go. And the first with Firewire connection (the others have had USB). What a difference with speed! What a relief not to have that little spinning Apple beach ball on the screen while waiting for the computer and external drive to catch up with each other. Well done Western Digital!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast. Really fast hard disk. FW 800 is really fast. You could copy 1gb in about 15 seconds. The display is a nice touch, but you have to have their software installed, which is not that good. It changes all your default icons for all their drives, and is not that useful when you already have Time Machine on your Mac. And the USB could be the standard mini usb like the old ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great portable drive for anyone Bought this to use it with my Macbook Air. It looks stunning and matches the Air perfectly. Love the fact that it displays the remaining space on the actual LCD screen. It's fast compare to some of my older WD drives. This drive looks and feel as if it was made for my Macbook Air. It comes with all the cables so I didn't have to buy anything else for the drive.
