Hoya HK-DG72 overview

  • 1Description

The Digital Filter Kit from Hoya offers everything you need to get started with your outdoor shooting.

UV Filter
UV filters are wise initial investments. They help protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs. This filter is multi-coated.

Circular Polarizer Filter
Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. Circular polarizers are specifically designed for use with auto-focus SLR cameras. They will also work on manual systems and video cameras without problems.

Neutral Density Filter
Neutral Density filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 4x) effectively compensates average situations.

Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.

The kit comes with a handy filter pouch in which your filters will be safely guarded and that will fit within your gear bag.

UV Filter

Hoya filters provide additional benefits of correction for Ultraviolet(UV) light which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details
If desired they can be left on the lens at all times for protection

Circular Polarizer

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays to remove haze from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

2x = ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO by 1/2)
4x = ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO by 1/4)
8x = ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO by 1/8)

Hoya Quality

As one of the premier filter manufacturers, Hoya filters continue to made from quality glass assuring the photographer clear, sharp and accurate images
Hoya filters consistently provide even color all the way through the filter; all surfaces are ground and polished to specific thickness and tolerances
Even non-multi-coated Hoya filters have one layer of anti-reflective coating applied to each surface of the glass; Hoya's single layer coating decreases light reflection off the surface from approx. 9% to an average of 4-5%

    Hoya HK-DG72 reviews

    72mm Digital Filter Kit is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 7.
    Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cheap look and feel in construction This is the first time I have tried this brand of filter and it appears to work well with my Nikon 300. However, having used Tristar Optics Filters in the past, I was a little disappointed with the construction of the Hoya lenses. The lenses were dirty when they arrived and took some effort to clean them. The leans frames look and feel cheap compared to the Tristar. Unless there is a major difference with the image quality using the Hoya, I will most likely return to using Tristar in the future. They are about the same price and I like the feel and results of the Tristar.... They don't look and feel cheap.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice accessary The digital filter kit by Hoya is a nice accessary and contains the filters you would buy anyway (or should :-) Hoya offers two kits: one with UV, polarizer, and neutral density (which is what I go) and a nother one which has a substitute for the neutral desnity filter. The price was a bit cheaper than buying them individually which was the primary draw. On the down side, having them come in a soft case which holds 4 filters wasn't the best for me because it doesn't fit so well in my case...in its favor though, it does hold 4 filters which leaves 2 spare (because I keep the UV on the lens always) so I can put the adapter rings for my 50mm lens and my sons 70-200 f/2.8L lens. Construction was good too. Other filters I've purchased seemed gritty when I screwed them on. These are clean and smooth which is important when you're putting them on and off repeatedly (esp the polarizer and ND filters)

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value This combination of filters is ideal for all levels of photographers. The UV and circular polarizer are a must for anyone who takes pictures outside. The polarizer is great for removing glare, but also really makes the sky deep blue and gets the clouds to pop off the screen. The ND filter is great for creating beautiful water shots and and reducing the dept of field for cloase up and portraits. The price for these three filters in really good and the case is helpful to protect them.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Filter kit I just started using the UV (didn't have a chance to use the other 2) but I really like the kit. It's really a good value and for the type of photography I do I'm sure it will be fine. I definitely feel better about having a filter in front of my lens to keep it proteced from the occasional dust/dirt/water. I'm looking forward to use the other 2 filters as soon as I get a chance.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Deal Good deal for 3 well made filters. Not top shelf, but definitely the upper middle in quality. Comes with a better than average case that can fit up to 4 filters. However, the case is soft sided and can get crushed under a moderately heavy bag load (think TSA screening and baggage carousels). If the case is inside a bag, which is inside of your luggage, you MAY be OK. Case could be a bit sturdier.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filter trio Very versatile. Everything that I need as a novice photography. Currently using them on the Tameron 18-270 and they are everything I need and more. Learning lots of new tricks as I go using the different filters
