GoPro HD Naked HERO overview

  • 1Description

GoPro, known for their mountable cameras, presents the HD HERO Naked Wearable Camera. Why "Naked"? This HD video/still camera is compatible with ALL GoPro HERO camera mounting accessories; that means you can mix and match optional accessories for quick setup in any number of applications. With the appropriate optional mounting accessories in place you'll be ready to film with your helmet, vehicle, RC car, surfboard, and anywhere else you can stick a mount. All you'll have to do is pop the camera into place and go.

Now the next thing you're wondering about is: "What kind of HD video does the camera shoot?" The HD HERO Naked records in multiple high definition resolutions, including: 1920 x 1080/30p, 1280 x 960/30p, 1280 x 720/60p, and 1280 x 720/30p. The camera uses a 5MP 1/2.5" HD CMOS sensor to help capture beautiful H.264 HD footage, along with help from a fixed focus (2.0' - infinity lens with f/2.8 aperture) lens, low-light sensitivity of 1.4 lux, and automatic exposure control and auto white balance. The status LCD on the front of the camera indicates settings to help you dial the camera in.

The Naked loves water too. This camera is waterproof up to 197' (60 m). That is of course when this little honey is safely tucked away in the included waterproof housing. That housing also protects from dust and dirt. In addition to water safety the camera features a rechargeable 1100mAh lithium-ion battery with a lifespan of 2.5 hours. The Naked also has a built-in battery warmer to protect the power source from cold during extreme winter activities. How cute. And, ingenious.

What else, you ask? Well, as previously mentioned the Naked takes 5MP photos. It can do the traditional one photo snap shot thing, or you can set it to shoot at 2 / 5 / 10 / 30 and 60 second intervals until you either shut the camera off, the memory card fills up, or the battery conks out. You can also set the camera to take a series of three shots or set it to record using the self-timer.

Last, but certainly not least, the Naked also boasts "Audio Excellence". The good folks at GoPro have super-secret audio nerds who reportedly "obsess" over audio. GoPro promises that the Naked isn't just picking up white noise, but the actual sound of your voice and your activity. Nice!

Professional Quality, Full HD Video
1080p, 960p, and 720p in 30 and 60 fps. The HD HERO line of cameras offers three different HD resolutions, giving you three filming modes to capture the best angles for any given activity:

  • 1080p: 1920 x 1080 HD featuring a 127° angle of view, 30 fps, and 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio
  • 960p: 1280 x 960 Ultra Wide and Tall HD featuring a 170° angle of view, 30 fps, and 4:3 aspect ratio. See more of the action above and below than widescreen 16:9 resolutions can show
  • 720p: 1280 x 720 Ultra Wide HD featuring a 170° angle of view, both 30 and 60 fps, and 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio
5MP Photos, Automatically
HD HERO cameras can shoot hands-free, 5 megapixel photos automatically at 2 / 5 / 10 / 30 / and 60 second intervals until the batteries die or the SD card is full (2.5 hours). Or set it to single shot, triple shot, or self timer for more traditional photo taking
Audio Excellence
You'll only be hearing the sounds of your sport, not the howl of the wind. How? Obsessive audio engineering and an understanding that good sound is as important as good video
Rechargeable Lithium-Ion, Built-In Battery Warmer
The rechargeable 1100mAh lithium-ion battery (included) lasts for 2.5 hours of constant recording. It can be recharged to 80% capacity in just 2 hours when plugged into a computer's USB port, or in 1 hour when plugged into a USB compatible wall or car charger. Camera can also be used while charging...handy on road trips where it's fun to leave the camera rolling. Camera also features an integrated battery heating system for keeping your battery warm in winter activities
Shockproof, Bombproof & Waterproof to 197' (60 m)
Don't let a little water, or even a ton of water get in the way of getting the shot. Proven in heavy surf from Hawaii to Tahiti, Southern Mexico to Northern California, HD HERO cameras can handle it thanks their highly engineered polycarbonate exoskeletal housing. Waterproof to 197' (60 m) and tough enough to take a spin across the asphalt, GoPros are built to take a beating
The HD HERO Naked is compatible with all other GoPro HERO camera mounting accessories, so it's very easy to expand the functionality of your camera to suction cup to vehicles, clamp to bike handlebars and seat posts, mount to surfboards, and even be worn on the wrist or chest. Included is one mount for attaching the camera to a helmet or other curved surface as well as the quick-release HD housing which protects the camera

    GoPro HD Naked HERO reviews

HD HERO Naked Wearable Camera is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best POV camera out there I use the Hero mainly for realty video. I can set it up in remote locations in timelapse mode and not worry about the safety of the camera. I also use the gopro for aerial video. I use sticky mounts to secure it to the bottom of the aircraft. It takes a little playing around where to mount it, but once you get it, it gives amazing shots. This is by far the best POV camera out there. One thing to remember though, the gopro's curved lens makes everything out of focus when shooting underwater. This can be fixed by purchasing a flat lens case. once the flat lens is added to the camera, it shoots amazing underwater video.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from GoPro Video Camera In regard to the equipment I purchased. It was everything that you advertised. However, we were not aware that we needed a seperate piece of equipment to observe what we were shooting. Of course we will purchase the item but was disappointed that it wasn't a part of the camera as purchased. We were going to send it over seas with a gentleman from Liberia and when we saw that piece not on it, we knew that he would never be able to take the video we needed. Again just an inconvenience but the gentleman had to leave the evening that we recieved the equipment therefore, we could not get the video we needed until later in the year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Camera! Don't expect professional controls or any kind of manual adjustments with this camera, but for what it does, it does it very well. The image quality is surprisingly good considering the size of the camera. The biggest drawback is audio quality, but I can live with it; the camera is there for the shot, not the sound. Easy to mount just about anywhere, very robust. I used the suction cup mount to put in on the wing of my single engine airplane. It was solid at 120 knots. This camera is quickly becoming the standard flight recorder for skydiving and BASE jumping as well. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I initially bought this unit as a slave HD camera for recording hard to get angles without risking my pricier 5d mark II. However, the HD Hero has proven itself worthy and actually gave me some crystal clear footage that just doesn't make sense with an inexpensive camera as this. When I edit my footage, its hard to compare. As expected, using this camera for low light isn't where this camera shines, the menu settings can get tedious to navigate through and the sound isn't the best quality . But as a standalone camera, its worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Nifty Little Camera I'm using this for time lapse movies and the ease of use and quality of the images are outstanding. In addition, its video capability is equally as good. You'll definitely need the instruction insert to properly set it up the first few times but after that, it's a snap. The actual process of producing a time lapse movie is a little cumbersome and you'll need a freeware utility to batch processes the 5Mb images down to a usable size but that's not a camera issue. Would like to see housing that accepts the mini USB but that's on the horizon.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from gopro hd Camera is great for a video camera, used outdoors on a sunny day to test it. I prefer 720p @ 60 fps over 1080p @ 30 fps if there is motion involved. It handles going from bright sunlight to shade pretty well. The microphone works great on it and does much better than the competition regarding wind noise. Stills shot on this are not very good and you can not replace a regular digital camera with this for photos. underwater it works great and I have no complaints there. Transitioning from in water to out of water worked flawlessly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GoPRO HERE Naked Camera review I bought this camera as an experiment to take scuba diving. It held up extremely well, especially in depths of 90-100feet. Below 95 feet or so, the videos had this odd red cast which no doubt is from the lack of light. Despite this, there is still enough clarity to see what you're looking at. The sound picked up clearly as well. I am so thrilled I bought the camera, now I have complete underwater documentation of my trip. One thing I will say is that the camera does better shooting into the light, rather than against it. So keep the sun at your back if possible when shooting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hit or Miss... Keeping in mind this is a $259 camera, of which, I have owned 3: Issues: - I have had 1 GoPro completely die within a week of purchase - I have had stuck pixels on 1 of 3 I own - Very picky about SD cards. Buying the best card does not mean it will work better with a GoPro. Buy a Kingston Class 4 and be done with me Pros: - Mounting Options - Way better than a contour. More versatile, more variety. - Mounting positions - its depth means it can go places the countour cant - waterproof case - durable - we have thrown them out of planes, and they have survived impact Cons: - Purple stripe (lens flare) in the video - much like a lens flare, the waterproof case causes a purple band to show up in your video when facing anywhere near the sun - Overall reliability - Black plastic piece on the case tends to break easily Overall: These currently are the go-to camera for casual skydiving video. They are great for what they are - cheap cameras for casual video. File formats are easy to work with, and do look pretty good. For $259, they are cheap and disposable, and I can sacrifice some of my standards for the interesting angles a GoPro can provide!
