Gets a lot of room sound (could be good or bad, depending on your needs) but I have been loving it. HUGE toms!
Great, great, great all around mic.

I have three. I have a several other mics with better specs. Forget the specs and trust your ears. The VP88 sound is uncolored - which bothers a lot of people. The sound field is perfect, which bothers a lot of people. Only problem is a bit of built in noise, I can't deny that. I do a lot of drive-by live recordings with built in ambient noise, so this is no problem for me. If you need to have a mic that sets up in seconds and has almost no coloration, try it, you'll like it.

question
Hi, I was just wondering. Is it possible to connect Shure VP88 to Sony PCM-D100? And how? And is there any disadvantage in doing that? (recording quality, etc.) All the best, Emil
The Shure VP88 can be used with a portable recorder such as the D-100 when set to stereo mode and using the internal battery power. To connect to the 3.5mm input on the recorder would require the included Y cable and additional adapter cable. There would be no disadvantage, however the PCM-D100 is designed primarily for use with the internal mics, and a mic such as the Shure would benefit from a unit with XLR inputs and higher quality preamps.

Yes, it does.

Is it mounted vertically or horizontally on the mic stand for optimum performance?
The VP88 is a stereo mic with a mid-side pickup pattern, meaning the top capsule is cardioid and the sides are bi-directional. Vertical or Horizontal orientation can be used based on the location of the sound source, but vertical would be typical.

question
Hi - would there be any advantages in sound quality of buying this over the sound I already get from the Sony PCM-D100 built in mics? I realise they're XY and this is an MS mic but I'm hoping to record two things acoustic singer songwriter bits and also some ambience from a forrest and wondered if the sound from using this VP88 into a mixer (mixpre-d) line out into the line in of the PCM-D100 would yield better results than just using the built in mics on the pcm-d100.
Although the built-in mics of the Sony PCM-D100 are very good, this Shure VP-88 offers a very large improvement. Along with better sound, this external mic offers the flexibility of distance and placement away from the recorder.

question
Everybody tells me that this mic is great for loud environments. I could use that. But what's the max SPL?
Bill K is correct.
