ASUS RT-N16 overview

  • 1Description

The RT-N16 Multi-Functional Gigabit Wireless N Router with Storage, Printer, & Media Server from Asus is a versatile router that can connect a variety of your wireless devices while also giving you advanced server functions. With three external antennae and a powerful CPU, this router can transfer data at a max rate of 300 Mbps for wireless-N devices and can also connect to devices that are compatible with the older 802.11b and 802.11g standards. In addition, it features four Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports, so you can establish fast wired connections with Ethernet-enabled devices.

Because there are also two built-in USB 2.0 ports, you can connect USB 2.0-enabled peripherals such as scanners, printers, and external hard drives. If you do connect any of these, you can access them wirelessly within your LAN network. You can also use them with the router's built-in server functions. The router can serve as a Printer server, FTP server, UPnP media server, or a 24/7 BitTorrent downloader. Whether you use the router as a server or not, you can utilize the EZQoS function to prioritize which computer programs or applications should receive the most bandwidth. In turn, these prioritized programs will run more smoothly because they'll receive the bandwidth they need.

For security, you can quickly setup WiFi Protected Access with the one-touch WPS button. However, for more advanced options, you have a variety of encryption methods, such as 64/128-bit WEP, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA-Enterprise, WPA2-Enterprise, and Radius with 802.1x. You also have NAT and SPI firewall options as well as Port, IP Packet, URL keyword, and MAC address filtering.

Enough bandwidth and processing power to simultaneously handle file transfers and downloads, video streaming, games and VoIP calls. Advanced MIMO technology makes it all possible.
UPnP Media Server
If you have an USB hard drive connected to the router, you can stream content from it to your UPnP compatible devices, such as your game system, home entertainment center, or music player
EZ All-In-One Printer
After you run the ASUS Network Printer Setup, you can setup wireless access to a printer or scanner on your LAN so that everyone can wirelessly print or receive scans
EZQoS for Easy Bandwidth Management
The easy-to-configure EZQoS feature allows you to allocate more bandwidth for higher priority applications so that they run smoothly
Enhanced Download Master
With this technology, you can easily download files to an external hard drive attached to the router without having to use or run your computer
Non-Stop BT Download
Even when your PC is off, the router can download from HTTP, FTP, or BT sites to an external hard drive attached to your router
Super Speed for P2P Download
The router supports up to 300,000 sessions for P2P download with super speed which allows more users and clients to connect to the Internet and ensures an ultra-stable network connection
With the AiDisk feature, you can setup an FTP server along with an external hard drive that enables you to remotely download files from the server or remotely share them with friends
Simplified Security
Press the WPS Button to easily set up a secure and protected wireless network
Compatible with Windows operating systems and open source code

    ASUS RT-N16 reviews

RT-N16 Multi-Functional Gigabit Wireless-N Router with Storage, Printer, & Media Server is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great product. My first WLAN setup. This product was a breeze to setup, just plugged it in and it set itself up. Never had to go through network wizard. Never read the owners manual until after. It provides fast dependable communication. It is as good or better than my previous LAN setup. Now I can spread devices out and not be crowded near the computer. Setting up printers was easy also. However, the part where you temporarily connect the the printer to a usb port during the wireless setup would not work when I used the usb port on the router, I had to use the usb port on the computer. But once setup the printer worked fine wireless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Run great with the third party firmware I bought Asus RT-N16 based on its hardware spec, like Gigabite Ethernet, powerful CPU, 128MB RAM/32MB flash and the most important thing, i.e. be able to run DDWRT and Tomato. It did work with Asus latest firmware. But my family complains the jerky playing of Youtube after I enabled its EzQoS. Well, I switched to TomatoUSB and now everything is working as expected. Tomato QoS is powerful. I connected a 2.5 hard drive to one of the USB ports and it became a file server (throughput is about 5MB/sec like everyone said). I installed transmission and then it became a download manager for BT. It runs cool and works like a charm. Too bad Asus firmware is not good enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RT-N16 router review This is my primary/only home router now hard-wired to two Windows Vista computers and used by two wireless laptops. This router is fast and has very good range. I also have my basic canon $30 printer connected to it printing wirelessly. And one more USB drive I am planning on using for a RAID1 USB enclosure (w/ 2 intenal drives) to use as a NAS. Pros: -Price! -Expandability - use as print server and NAS device. -speed and range. -features! in GUI for example - ability to allocate speed to certain computers (my work laptop takes priority over my wife's mac). Cons- There may be some features missing that can be had using another firmware (i.e. ddwrt or tomato), but I haven't found them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Hardware : Horrid Software Out of the box impression: Great hardware, horrid software. This thing is ginormous, so make sure you have space. It's plug and play and will let you enjoy the increased speed benefits of 802.11n (with the appropriate 802.11n adapters). However, a big benefit to this router is the ability to theoretically connect ANY USB printer and have the ability to print to it from your network. My Samsung CLP-300 was recognized but every print job I sent took about 10 minutes to process and ended up wasting paper because it kept printing garbage. So, it didn't take me long to install TOMATOUSB on this thing. ASUS has a lot to learn with writing firmware. They need to concentrate more on writing software that works instead of software that looks pretty. The GUI is great, but I'd gladly take the simplicity of TOMATO's interface to ASUS's animated GUI. Before TOMATOUSB: Wireless connection speeds with a PC approximately three feet away maxed out at 144Mbps. Rosewill 802.11n adapter (300Mbps max). Range was no better than my Linksys WRT54G (loaded with TOMATO also) My Samsung CLP-300 was a brick. After TOMATOUSB: Wireless connection speeds maxed out at 300Mbps. Range effectively tripled - I can move about my house without dropping one wifi signal wave on my ipad. My Samsung CLP-300 is NOW a fully functioning network printer. It's absolutely disappointing that this router was being held back by ASUS' firmware. Only after installing TOMATOUSB does this router become a PHENOMENAL buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Performance & good streaming video Most of the TV I watch in the evenings is HD movies from Netflix so I wanted to upgrade my wireless G router to improve the performance. I also wanted to hook my printer directly to the home network to simplify the access to it from any of our three workstations and I wanted to improve the range so I could take my laptop to the basement to work. The RT-N16 has performed great in every respect! I do recommend updating the firmware before installing a printer on the router's USB port. You can download the current firmware from the company website and it is a very simple procedure. I do think the documentation could have been a bit more explicit, but it is no worse that the typical documentation that is provided with most technical products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Router Rocks on 100Mbps Internet Using this as home router between Internet and LAN with 3 wired and 1-2 wireless connections.Should have bought this router long ago! I own 3 Netgear routers and a D-Link router, have also owned LinkSys. This Asus RT-N16 blows them all away. I have 100Mbps Internet and finally the throughput is very near rated speed. Other routers were lucky to maintain 40-50Mbps, and they often dropped connections during large downloads. I have always purchased Netgear, D-Link, and Linksys on their trusted name. Not anymore.Plugged my HP DeskJet 5740 into one of the RT-N16 USB ports - and it JUST WORKED! Nothing to load or configure.Even the latest Asus FW and interface works great, and I haven't even tried DD-WRT or Tomato yet.I buy some of my PC gear from ..., but the selection and prices here at B&H keeps getting better. ...***** Five EGGS for the ASUS RT-N16!********** Ten EGGS for B&H!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ok so far. Used as a router for my LAN, I also intend to set it up as a media server. For the most part it is easy to set up, although the toughest problem I had was setting the residential gateway that I had as a bridge to this router. It is important to note that a modem is required for internet connectivity. Only I expected my range to increase over the residential gateway, and it really hasn't.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Satisfied Pros: Fast processor, plenty of memory, 2 USB ports for printer or portable drives, allows flash with ddrt or tomato. Getting great wireless connections with stock firmware. Been about a month since I owned it and have not needed to restart nor have I had any signals drop. I have the latest firmware installed and right now it does everything that I need it to do so I have no need to put tomato or ddrt on it right now. I have my printer hooked up (epson) to the 1 usb port and it allows all my computers to access my printer without any problems. Cons: The biggest thing was using the usb for my portable hdd. I couldnt access the files off of asus server. A quick call to them found that there server is being used alot more then they thought and they are in the process of upgrading. So right now it could be a hit or miss for it to work till the upgrade is completed. Lost of 1 star for that. My final thoughts: I make it a habit to download the latest firmware and doing it for this router is going to greatly improve it over the older firmware. The router will run much better. IF you find you need a stronger wifi signal or need more settings search google and download Tomato or DDRT firmware and this will kick it up a notch over the stock firmware.
