Heil Sound PR 30 overview

  • 1Description

The matte black PR 30B Dynamic Cardioid Studio Microphone from Heil Sound is a high-performance dynamic microphone for use in broadcast studios. The large dynamic element produces a smooth response with an articulate and natural midrange, offering a sound very similar to a ribbon microphone. The size of the diaphragm, combined with a low mass and an efficient NdFeB magnet structure, allow the microphone to achieve a wide dynamic range and capture high SPLs, making it a great guitar amp microphone.

The microphone's super cardioid pickup pattern rejects off-axis noise, focusing on the sounds in front of it. The steel body and internal hum bucking coil shield the microphone, making it safe for use near video monitors and noisy lighting fixtures. An internal Sorbothane shock mount decouples the microphone's dynamic element from the body to reduce the effects of handling noise.

The PR 30B microphone has a hum bucking coil, in addition to the large shock-mounted diaphragm. Electronic noises will not affect your mix when using the PR 30B near PC monitors in the studio, nor near neon lights and vibration is not an issue with the PR 30B. The PR 30B can handle 146 dB of SPL.

Ribbon-Like Sound
The large dynamic element has a smooth frequency response with a natural and articulate midrange, providing a ribbon-like sound
Wide Dynamic Range
The large size and low mass of the microphone element, combined with a powerful NdFeB magnet structure, give the microphone a cardioid pattern with exceptional off-axis rejection, and the ability to capture high SPLs while providing a wide dynamic range
Specialized Screen System
The microphone's screen system uses two different mesh screens and an internal filter to keep sibilance and plosives to a minimum
Internal Shock Mount
The internal Sorbothane mount decouples the microphone element from the body, reducing the effects of handling noise
Heavily Shielded
The rugged steel body and internal hum bucking coil shield the microphone, allowing you to use it near video monitors and noisy light fixtures

    Heil Sound PR 30 reviews

PR 30B Dynamic Cardioid Studio Microphone (Matte Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful midrange. First off, it's a Heil, so I had high expectations even before it arrived. I bought this to round out my collection of broadcast microphones. I already own Heil's PR40, and it flatters my beefy voice - however, when we have guests, the '40 sometimes doesn't do so hot. Their voices end up sounding a bit bigger than reality, and in cases where their voice is particularly high-toned, muddy. The '30 fixes that problem. It inherits a lot from the '40, like great rear-rejection, and clean, vibrant reproduction of the human voice (something you don't often get with a dynamic). It then adds a bit more detail in the high-midrange, making it perfect for voices that are less than beefy to the naked ear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great guitar cab microphone I play and record with two guitar setups, one being a 1967 Fender Princeton amp. I read recently that using two mic's, one condenser and one dynamic is a great way to capture different nuannces of a classic amp like the Princeton. Last year I purchased a Sennheiser MK4 from B&H and in adding the PR30 I am able to capture the sound I want at any volume I play. Awesome mic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it says it does. Using these mics as live drum OH mics. I've read and heards so many good things about these mics that I had to get a pair. They did not disappoint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for acoustic instruments and vocals. Its hard for me to put the sonic qualities of something into words.  I will try to compare this to the Shure SM7B, another favorite large diaphragm dynamic microphone that some will be familiar with.  I record acoustic instruments, like banjo, mandolin, dobro, guitar and vocals. The SM7B sounds more tame and neutral to me, even with its presence boost engaged. The Heil has a very natural sound, but more lively and flattering.  The Heil tracks need less treatment.  I prefer the PR 30 for acoustic instruments.  If it had a bass roll off switch, I think it would be perfect. I have to pay attention to placement, or guitar will sound a little boomy. The SM7B has a smoother sound that takes processing well and doesnt pick up transient noises as much...so I like it on dobro and vocals. If I had to use the PR 30 for everything, I think I would still be happy with it, but the SM7B is better at rejecting off axis noises.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tube guitar amp? Get it! I've used 57's on my Boogie Mark 4. Not to mention 421's, RE20's, 609's, 414's you name it. This is the one! Nothing but sweet spot. This thing is bullet proof too. For live guitar cabinets or vocals......look no further! (Bob, you nailed it again.)
