QuikLok A-50AM reviews

A-50AM - Tripod Studio Boom Stand is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from A-50AM Tripod Studio Boom Stand I really like the concept behind this stand, esp for the kind of work I do: Location recording of choirs, orchestras, soloists, percussion etc. I have owned at least a dozen over the years. They are (WERE) perfect. The manufacturing of this has changed for the worse in recent years, and some mods are necessary to get it to behave properly. 1. Plastic sleeve in the center/boom assembly that holds the boom arm itself falls out of either side. Have to use gaffer tape to secure these, every time, with the last four stands I've purchased. 2. Set-screw/ratchet for the boom arm lock has been replaced with a solid ratchet now; looks like a cloned part from a photo; it no longer releases internally to let you rotate the item for best torquing angle. I replace these with older original parts as soon as I get it. 3. Wheels are cheaper, wheel-locks are clumsier. One broke off during the first day of use. Replaced with old (better) stock. Hope this doesn't keep happening.... 4. At the end of the boom, they've updated/added adapters for different size mic holders. This is probably nice for international & Euro markets; ok with me, but I remove the bigger locking washer behind it, and tighten the adapter down as hard as I can, so it doesn't keep coming off with each mic clip that I attach. 5. Two problems with the main/center pole: First, there's no captive pin inside the inner pole, so it's easy to accidently pull the whole thing right out of the center pole! Very dangerous (and embarassing if you've got a mic array on the stand and have clients watching you...) Secondly, the molded rubber lock assembly at the top of the main/center pole always arrives loose now; I guess this is a good thing, since it lets me pull the whole thing apart to fix the captive inner pole issue, and then add a bit of glue/gaffer tape to the outside top of the main pole, then hammer down the plastic locking assemble to keep it all together. Bottom line: I love this stand in concept, but I hate the new (and inferior) changes. I keep buying them as needed, replacing the bad parts with old stock. I wish they'd go back to the original manufacturer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great stand! I used this stand while I was recording congregational singing. It was an experiment, but I am very pleased with the results. The stand is very steady even when the microphone is raised almost to the maximum. The only thing to be aware of is that the stand weighs slightly less than 40 lbs, so it may be difficult to carry long distances. Overall, the stand is very well built and served its purpose well, so I would definitely recommend it to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stable and Easy to Handle I installed this boom in a small video studio to hang mikes overhead of a news desk holding a pair of mics in stereo configuration. A music mic. boom stand was fully extended and was sagging badly barely able to do what this heavy duty stand does with handsome ease. It can be walked under, and moved and turned without tipping. It's just the thing for my purpose Lorton Post-lite Weekly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Follow up on review.... Well, the good news is that these things are selling for $ now. The bad news is that the build-quality is just as bad and all the same problems still exist. For example, the last one I bought (March 2012) arrived with all three wheels completely shattered. Some genius attached them to the stand before shipping (they're supposed to be in a separate bag, and you install them afterwards, but not on this model - probably a demo they were unloading.) one big DROP and they must have all broken off at the same time. Ditto for one of the side clamps knobs, it was sheared off right at the edge. Fortunately, I had spare parts for everything, and not wanting to go through the hassle of shipping it all back again, I just replaced the bad stuff. (I'm now ordering replacement wheels from a company in Reading, PA, so the wheel problem is moot....) Again, buyer beware: GREAT stand, esp for the price, but lots of hoop-jumping to get it ready for prime-time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Strong and Durable! Stand is much heavier than I expected which was great. Really needed the extra support this stand provides. Extends even further than what I need it to. Great product!
