JK Audio UNIVERSAL HOST Overview

The Universal Host from JK Audio is a desktop digital hybrid telephone interface ideal for use with radio interviews and other conversation capturing and broadcasting applications. The system works with IP and PBX telephones, and connects easily between the phone's base and handset.

You can connect a dynamic microphone and set of headphones to the Universal Host to capture your voice at full quality, maintaining separation between your voice and the caller. The Universal Host has a USB audio codec, and supports recordings at 16-bit/48kHz resolution. It puts your voice on the left channel, and the caller on the right. You can also play recordings from your computer directly into the phone system.

The Universal Host's DSP technology continuously monitors both incoming and outgoing audio to deliver terrific separation. A proprietary echo cancellation algorithm provides this separation without setup, and without sending a noise burst down the line. The Universal Host has connectors for a mic, headphones, mixer, sound card, and telephone, allowing you to fully integrate it into your studio. The unit's rear stereo output puts your voice and the caller's voice on separate channels, while the XLR output has only the caller's voice. Handset and Online buttons allow you to choose between speaking on the handset or through the Universal Host's connections. A second switch lets you monitor either the caller or the USB audio through the headphone connector.

I too had some audio issues with the hybrid out of the box but upon reading the manual I discovered that there is a jumper setting you can adjust inside the unit to attenuate the audio levels further. After that, the audio from both IP and analog phones are as clean as a whistle.

I had such high hopes...

Unfortunately this did not work out with our VOIP phones. I tries several Cisco and Polycom desk phones and could not get a very clear audio. It sounded so bad that we chose not to use it for an event and I returned it. I guess I will stick with a POTS interface for now.

Yes, you can connect the USB port on the JK Audio Universal Host Desktop Digital Hybrid Telephone Interface directly to your computer's USB port for a bi-directional audio connection or for stereo recording on the computer. Analog connections are not required to connect to the computer.
