Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon is the second generation of large-aperture telephoto zoom lenses incorporating Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilizer) anti-shake system. It offers the equivalent of shooting at shutter speeds 3 to 4 stops slower than without OS, thus allowing handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. Its HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing.

It features a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 that remains constant throughout the zoom range, making it incredibly valuable when shooting in low light situations such as wedding or other events. It is also great when shooting fast-moving subjects such as sports, when fast shutter speeds are needed to capture fleeting moments. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is fast and versatile and at a length of 7.8 (19.8cm) will be a tool that seldom sees the inside of your camera bag. The lens comes with a petal-type lens hood plus an adapter to extend its length for users with APS-c cameras.

Note: This lens is optimized for full-frame Nikon DSLRs and may also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors but it will increase focal length to about 100-300mm with most cameras.

Note: When using the OS function of the lens with a camera which incorporates a stabilizer unit, please turn the camera's stabilizer unit off.

Note: Optical Stabilizer (OS) function will not work with film SLR cameras

Sigma's New APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the second generation of this large aperture telephoto zoom lens now incorporating Sigma's Optical Stabilization (OS) anti-shake system. It uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake.
Two FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have the performance equal to expensive fluorite glass, and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, combine to provide excellent reduction of aberrations and image quality.
The rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus images (bokeh).
This compact lens is only 7.8" (19.81 cm) in length.
The Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range.
The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical quality, and to enhance its appearance.
The lens DG designation translates to large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras while retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

    Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 reviews

70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 159.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Impressive I am a new camera enthusiast and love taking pictures as my children play sports. This lens has worked out wonderfully. I compared this to a similar Nikon lens but after researching and talking to a few experienced photographers I purchased this lens to work on my Nikon D3200 DSLR Camera so I could zoom in and get clear fast action shots. I saved a lot by purchasing the Sigma. The zoom is great for plays down the fields to capture the moment and the vibration reduction is just what I needed because I don't always like to travel with my tripod. My only complaint is that it gets heavy when I take it off the tripod and walk around a while.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Completely happy with my purchase I purchased this lens instead of the Nikon, and I have yet to be disappointed. The only discernible difference is the quality of the glass, this one already has as a very minor scratch, meanwhile my similarly treated Nikon lenses that I have owned for longer do not. It could be a coincidence, either way, I am still very happy with the lens, especially considering it is half the price. I do a lot of concert shooting with it, both photo and video. It handles low light well, although the auto focus is basically useless in low light, so I keep it on manual. I also always keep it on a monopod, it is pretty heavy without it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY happy with this lens I had been putting off going from the kit lens I got with my D800 to an f/2.8 for obvious reasons. They are not inexpensive, and heck.... I have a long lens already (@ f/5.6). I decided to make the investment and wish I would have the FIRST TIME I LOOKED INTO THESE LENSES. The creativity, clarity and field of this lens would have made the thousands of photos I took with the old lens so much better (the photos I took while hemming and hawing about the $). I did compare this Sigma to the Nikon and Tamron on an earlier search and found the Sigma to be excellent at almost 1/2 the price of the Nikon. DO IT! DO IT NOW, YOU WON'T REGRET THE RESULTS!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens, Excellent service I have been in the market for a 70-200 f2.8 for quite some time. I recently pulled the trigger on the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX DG APO OS HMS and I couldn't be happier. This lens was half the money of the Nikkor version but performs amazingly. I did substantial research on both lenses before purchasing the Sigma and I just don't see how one can justify the additional $ required for the Nikkor. This lense feels substantial, smooth focus and zoom, metal mount, and the stabalization is quite effective. This lens has certainly made me a fan of Sigma. If you want a pro lens for half the price...look no further!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Different experience NEW YORK before me is right about quite a few things, but I had a big exception in my experience. I shot for 2 weeks using my Nikon D300 in France after getting the lens a month ago. I wasn't happy with the sharpness of my images shot at f2.8. I found the results way too soft. Sharpness at the focal lengths I used was much better stopped down to something like f4 or even f5.6 for example. I proved that with quite a few shots. This lens is an improvement over previous Sigma 70-200 versions, but for $1700 it falls short of the Nikkor 70-200 VRII by a lot when it comes to sharpness at wide open apertures. For that reason I dropped my rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again I've been using the Canon 70-200 2.8 non IS for 15 years and swear by it for action shots, weddings in low light and all indoor /low light. The 2x converter makes it great for baseball, soccer, football and landscape/scenery. Now that I have the optical stabilizer, it's going to be heaven in the sports arena. Wish I was 20 years younger as I would start all over again shooting everything in sight. Sigma put out an affordable lens that equals the Canon tank...oh, and it looks nicer and very professional. Way to go, Sigma!(This ad was for a Nikon, but I bought the same lens for a canon--all the same)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from worth the price I have owned the previous version of this lens, non os, and I have used the Nikon 70-200, version 1 and 2. For what I needed from this kind of lens it just didn't make sense to buy the Nikon, so, I went with the Sigma once again. My copy is sharp at f/2.8 and at all focal lengths. I do find that it will hunt a little bit in very dim light and the af is not as fast as the Nikon - the Sigma does NOT have slow af, it's just that the Nikon is very fast and accurate and TWICE the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just What The Doctor Ordered... Being a grandpa, I get to shoot a lot of pictures of the grandchildren playing sports on Saturdays. Now that I own a Nikon D800 camera, I needed a lens that could deliver great action photos. When I owned a D300, I used a Nikon 70-200mm lens so I knew that I wanted a similar lens but without the big price tag. I did my homework and found the Sigma 70-200mm lens for FX cameras to be a top candidate as a viable solution at a reasonable price. However, I was still hesitant about buying a third party lens. After reading review after review by B&H Photo customers, I felt that I should trust their knowledge of ownership. Glad I did! My photos are crisp and clear with a pleasing bokeh. Best of all is the fact that the Optical Stabilizer works great for my aging hands. Almost every photo is a keeper. I have been interested in photography since 1965 and owned almost every Nikon and Zeiss lens that fit Nikon cameras through the years. The Sigma 70-200mm zoom lens won't disappoint you.
