Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors is an incredibly versatile, lightweight, and compact lens designed specifically for Pentax digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors. The lens has a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It features a construction of 17 elements in 13 groups with glass that corrects for flare, ghosting and all types of aberrations. It produces high contrast and sharp images throughout the zoom range even at its maximum aperture.

This lens is also equipped with Sigma's Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) which provides for fast and quiet autofocusing.

The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is ideal for many photo opportunities particularly landscapes and portraits, but with its wide focal range and a close focusing distance down to 11" (28cm) you can capture images with unique perspectives. It will quickly become one of the most important lenses in your gear bag.

Note: Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

This lens is for use with Pentax digital cameras with APS-C size sensors only. 1
The DC designation on the barrel means that this is a special lens designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size (APS-C) of the image sensor of your digital SLR. Its specialized design gives this lens the ideal properties for digital cameras, including a compact size and lightweight construction.
Constructed with 17 elements in 13 groups, it features FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass which is the highest level low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. This glass has a performance equal to fluorite glass which has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. FLD glass offers superior optical performance, equal to fluorite, at an affordable price.
Its HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet & high-speed auto focus.

    Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 reviews

17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Zoom Lens for Pentax DSLRs W/APS-C Sensors is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great I got this lens because I sold all my da limiteds to go to a mostly zoom setup. So far, iq wise, I would say its better than the da 40 and about even with the da21 and da15. It's very usable wide open and is amazing stopped down. There does seem to be a fair bit of vignetting and ca though. The build quality is great aside from my copy being able to slightly rotate while fully mounted. I'm very happy that sigma decided to remove the os in these newer versions for the Pentax mount since it would be a bit redundant if they still had it. With the lack of os you don't have that mechanical slosh when you move the lens around. Overall, I'm very happy with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sharpness Before i used Canon 15-85 and pentax 16-45. think this lens better than Pentax 16-45 and canon 15-85. it's optical quality like a prime lens.it have perfect sharpness and contrast. Body quality is so good, but it's heavy. There is no featherlike coating ( i think new coating so nice). There is some back focus problem with my copy, but focus is very silent and fast. There is vignetting at 17mm. Colors a little yellowish. I mean classic sigma colors. At the end, i can say this lens is so good and It's perfect for landscape and portrait

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have Lens Over the weekend I really put this lens to the test on my Pentax K-3. I had to shoot a First Communion in a church not well lit, the second was a baby shower inside a room with very large windows on three sides of the room on a sunny day!! Lots of glare here. In both situations this lens worked brilliantly! First - the lens is so very responsive and QUIET!! Focus was smooth & quick. Of course what matters most is the end result. The photos were clear, crisp and amazing! And that made me very happy. This is my first non-Pentax lens. I am now a HUGE SIGMA fan!!! If you're on the fence about this lens, don't be. This SIGMA lens is all that it says it is and more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best bang for your buck I've only had this lens a couple weeks and have only been able to take test shots of pets and family/friends. Thus far I'm extraordinarily pleased with its performance, especially considering the price. This was my upgrade from the standard 18-55mm pentax kit lens. The Sigma produces very sharp images with no chromatic aberration (until you blow-up the pictures to full size on a giant monitor and even then its very faint). I love having the large aperture through the entire zoom and surprisingly feel comfortable shooting wide open and can expect sharp images. Great for indoor lighting events. Macro performance was also surprisingly strong. The only thing this lens is missing is a weather-sealed construction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect travel lens Bought this lens specifically for a trip to Italy, also took my Pentax DA*50-135 the Sigma stayed on the K5 90% of the time. It is sharp, quiet and fast, never missed a focus and was a joy to use.Combined with the K5 it was faultless in low light.Yes the zoom is opposite to the Pentax but that was no big deal..Only minor quibble is no red dot to line up lens to body..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 17 -50 f 2.8 EX DC HSM PENTAX Most useful lense I use for general photo. Low light excellent no hunting quick focus. I sold my Pentax 16 50 2.8 I bought this Sigma. Excellent picture quality sharp crisp. I was debating with this or the Tamron 17 50 2.8. Everything I read Sigma was the clear winner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of potential HSM are quiet and fast on my K-3 body; a great lens when compared to similar offerings elsewhere. Aperture of f2.8 was indeed quick, but not quick enough, but please don't blame Sigma! My tastes are begining to lean toward the prime lens. I had to think long and hard about keeping this gem. I ended up using B and H's gracious policy to return, so I can fund pricier primes. Based upon Sigma build quality and price? I will definitely consider their prime offerings; they seem to make nice stuff for Pentax, wish they made more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great close range to wide angle lense I bought this lens because the Pentax DA* 16-50 arrived defective (not from BH). The focus was stuck at infinity, manual focus ring would turn but the elements did not move. I would like to have the weather resistance but was not willing to play the Pentax 16-50 lottery again. So I decided to try this sigma and after a few weeks of use am very impressed. It is such a handy lens for family events! It is fast enough to easily use inside without a flash and going to the wide end it works wonderfully for landscapes. The sharpness is crisp, colors are true and have not needed adjustment in post processing, and vignetting has not been an issue. Bottom line is that my standard go-to kit is my K5, this lens and my trusty DA* 50-135. This is a great combination that is easy to walk around with (just need a lens pouch and the camera on a strap) and you are ready for just about anything.
