    AKG Perception 120 Reviews

Perception 120 USB Condenser Microphone is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solidly built, great performance. My first impression was with the feel and weight of the box. Even before I opened it it just said 'quality'. Solidly built product which is being used by my son in his 'studio' in the corner of his bedroom. He is raving about it as it's his first piece of kit that didn't get borrowed from a cheap karaoke machine or some such. Easy to set up and set the levels for his Garage Band recording sessions. This could end up costing me a lot of money now he's had a taste of the good stuff but I'm happy to support him in with what he's passionate about. I'd definitely recommend AKG products based on my experience with this mic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Never regretted buying this! Possibly the best mic for the price.I am a hip hopper *And I gotta say, this mic produces a clean sound with a very rich tone - When set up correctly! The pre attenuation switch is great for keeping headroom in the mix and those pesky hisses are eliminated with the bass cut off switch.I would give it 5 stars if the manual was more detailed, other than the fact of how to connect the mic, there was no other helpful tips for mic useage and the recording settings (CD quality, Studio quality etc..).Like the fact that you should also be saying vocals toward the AKG logo (this goes for all AKG mics) otherwise it sounds flat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AKG Perception 120 USB Microphone AKG Acoustics GmbH is famous for producing microphones of the highest quality, and the competitively priced Perception 120 USB is no exception. It is a plug and play appliance that requires only setting the Input levels and resetting the Output device in Apple OS-X's sound System Preferences. By trial and error, I found that setting the Input and Output volumes to about 20 percent and 100 percent respectively produced a clear initial recording. Rumble and wind noises etc. can be markedly reduced by switching on the Bass-cut selector, especially when speaking close to the microphone. A higher Input volume could be adopted in a room with less ambient noise than mine, which has a fan and an open window in a tropical environment. In OS-X, a new audio recording can be made using Quicktime Player, Wire Tap Studio, Amadeus Pro or Garageband, with the latter three programs providing a range of editing and conversion options. However with Soundtrack Pro, recordings can be edited, tweaked and normalized, either destructively or non-destructively, to produce remarkable studio quality output.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extraordinary Microphone! As someone who has been around music my entire life, had a band in high school, did spoken word work for a muscian friend and just a few years ago had Sonar, a Shure mic and preamp setup to run into my audio board - I really wasn't expecting too much from a USB microphone. I saw the great reviews for the Audio Technica, but having owned AKG gear for years, I had faith in their build quality.I was right! First, this mic is solid! High quality right from the packaging to the nearly 2 pound mic. The true surprise, it's sound capture!!! I was really shocked! It's excellent! I use Sound Forge and Audition (both have good NR features). It came with a long cable, I didn't measure but it's at least 15 feet. It will pick up any ambient sound, albeit faint - just a little distance from noise and it is crystal clear with great low end!For kicks, I recorded with a desktop fan whirrring away. Sampled the noise in Audition, then eliminated all noise from the recording with no audible loss in the vocals, The mic is solidly built and feels like it would be at home in a studio. A bypass switch for very loud anf very low (thumpy) bass is on the front and accessible via separate toggle switches. Blue leds round out a slick, quality mic.For the simple spoken word stuff I'm doing, the Audio Technica may have sufficed - it's a good mic, but I had the chance to A/B them and was surprised with the extra range the AKG had , that with it's build and little extras and slightly higher frequency range - I bought my AKG!Both are good, but in my opinion, the AKG steps into the a level above the Audio Technica.Great microphone, you won't be sorry!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quality & Value As others have stated here already, this mic is built very solidly (it weighs several pounds) and has a no-smudge / no-fingerprint type of matte black finish, which is another real plus. I just received this mic today from B&H and spent several hours testing it out. Here are several things to note: 1) The diaphragm is in the FRONT of the mic, not the top. 2) The bass roll-off switch on the left side works fairly well, as does the -20dB pad on the right switch. The pad really makes a significant difference in dropping the input volume without having to grab a virtual slider to adjust it. The 2 switches are back-illuminated with ultra-cool looking blue LED's that light up whenever the mic is plugged into the USB jack of your computer. Lack of light indicates no power is reaching the unit. 3) Speaking of volume levels, it is of paramount importance to properly configure the mic right away, as is detailed in the instructions. At first, I had terrible results until I realized I had selected my laptop's internal mic as the default. Yes, I should have known better, but in my excitement to fire up the new toy I overlooked that minor yet all-important detail. What worked best for my situation was to drop the input level from 50 to 25. This reduced clipping and distortion to the point where the mic finally became usable. Once you have everything configured properly and do a bit of recording, you will notice how quiet this mic is, typical of AKG quality. FYI, I used Adobe Audition running on Win 7. There was no install other than a standard USB driver. This was an automatic process that took only a few seconds and the mic was then recognized by Windows as well as Audition, with no drop outs or other problems, once I had plugged it into the computer. Even though I typically prefer to record dry and add in FX later on, for the narrations and radio spots that I am doing, I noticed that adding a nice 4:1 or 8:1 compression on the input not only gives me the final desired result (big radio / DJ voice sound), but also acts as a limiter and helps prevent clipping. Yes, I know all this stuff already, but in case some people are not familiar with those tools, it's worth a try. The quality of this mic is top notch and is worth every single penny you spend on it. It comes with a very long USB cable (15'-20' I think) and a mini tripod stand. I strongly suggest that you invest in the optional AKG SH-100 Shockmount mic adapter. Regardless if you use the mini tripod or the SH-100, the AKG mic screws into those stands at the bottom of the mic, something I didn't expect. There is a lot of rear and some side sound rejection to this cardioid mic, which is a very good thing. There is also a built-in pop filter, but I still suggest purchasing the Pearstone PFN Nylon Round Pop Filter with Gooseneck if you plan on doing vocals or narrarations. This will help further eliminate sibilance and also help prevent the capsule from getting damaged from moisture (spit). Great mic, go ahead and get it, you will NOT be sorry! An excellent value for a little bit of money, and you DO get that great AKG sound!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality recording This Microphone proved to be a very good quality item. Perfect for voice recording when you have a sound proof studio. It is very sensitive and picks up all the noises, so if you are recording in a noisy environment, it can be tricky.
