Impact Octacool-9 Overview

  • 1Description

The Impact Octacool-9 Fluorescent Light with Octabox (9 Lamps) is a great choice for the photographer or videographer seeking a broad, flattering light source with unique fall-off characteristics for portraiture, fashion, or events.

Octagonal-shaped light sources have long had a reputation as the preferred portrait-shooter's light source. The shape offers an especially large surface area which produces wrap-around light, which envelopes the subject while creating natural-looking catchlights in the eyes.

Each daylight-balanced 28W lamp outputs 1400 lumens of light measured at 3.3 feet for a 9-lamp total of 12,600 lumens. Five switches on the rear of the fixture allow individual control of the lamps allowing 1 - 9 of them to be switched on or off, varying the output in 1400 lumen increments. The head's standard 5/8" receiver mounts to a huge variety of light stands and gripware with 5/8" studs.

The included Octabox has a removable inner baffle and front face allowing even greater flexibility from hard to ultra-soft light. The light head also comes with a removable aluminum reflector for a bright, contrasty lighting option.

Includes a 29.5˝ Octabox that provides a soft, uniform, diffused light
Noiseless operation allows clear audio for video productions
Cool output allows heat-sensitive subjects to be safely photographed up close
28W screw-in fluorescent lamps with a life expectancy of 6000-8000 hours
Rear switches allow you to select to have only one bulb on, all bulbs on, or any number of bulbs in between

    Impact Octacool-9 Reviews

Octacool-9 Fluorescent Light with Octabox (9 Lamps) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 76.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value and output, few quirks Love the high-quality, high-ish power output and affordability. Is it sturdily built and easy to use. Great for video lighting talking heads or room lighting. Included dish reflector is actually less efficient than using the softbox solo, without the diffusers. Installing the box requires patience and strong fingers, so plan to keep it attached whenever possible. A full review with sample images and a nice headshot setup is posted on my blog if you are interested. For the price and output, I would definitely choose this over the Octacool 6.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great light source These Octaboxes are a great versatile light source! I love having the option to turn on 1-9 bulbs using the switches on the back.If you're looking for a broad, soft light source, these may be a little on the small side at 30. But that can be remedied by shooting through a larger diffuser. But even at 30, these still give a great look. I use them in a small video studio and I'm pretty happy with them.On the downside, assembling the softbox itself was fairly difficult. Fortunately for me, I only needed to set it up once and leave it in the studio. If you plan to assemble/disassemble it regularly, it won't be convenient.Overall, I'm happy with them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Well With Others Everything arrived in working order after being delivered by UPS. The first shoot where this was unit was used involved integrating it with 3 Profoto strobes. I shot a quick custom white balance, and the lighting looked great. I used the Octacool as my main light, and the Profotos as fill, kicker, and hair lights. Since I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark II, using the Octacool as the main light significantly shortened the focus time on the camera in the low light situations that I typically use in the studio. I am looking forward to using this light in some Wet Plate photography in the near future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Studio Lighting We are using two of these lights for our 10'x12' studio and the lights wrap around our talent very nicely. We are using both the inner diffuser and the outer diffuser to spread the light as much as we can and we still get a nice 3 dimensional look for our video. The lights are positioned about 3 feet away from the subject at 45 degree angles. I've noticed this room easily heats up when we are filming so we went with the octacool and they still heat it up but it's a lot slower than most other lighting we've used and it's plenty bearable for what we do. These lights are almost a permanent fixture in this studio so like the other comments if you are traveling with these lights, plan on setting aside time for assembly and disassembly. Overall very pleased with the quality of these lights for the price

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light, great price This light source is ideal for video. It provides plenty of cool, soft illumination. The construction is solid, the switches are of good quality, and the softbox material is plenty rigid. All nine lamps arrived in tact and everything was in good working order. Using just this one softbox and a 42 silver reflector I am able to light a subject for interview (of course, two softboxes would be nice). There is no discernable ficker or noise produced by this light - even using a shotgun microphone. I was a little skeptical, but pleasantly surprised. Using a custom color balance the video looks great straight off the camera (Nikon D7000).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fluorescent lighting i love this light, it is so soft and the color is biggest issue with the light is that there is not enough light...i usually use studio strobes so this is so different...the great thing is that i can shoot wide open and get great background blur...this works great in a 1-2 kids max in studio and light has to be so close or there just isn't enough light. i did buy i second hoping i would get more light but it still was not enough....i love the picture that i have taken with feels like natural available light...i will keep the light but only use for specific jobs otherwise i will continue using my strobes to get more light. i would recommend this light but not as your only light source.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect For Studio Use I bought mine from B&H at least a year ago, maybe further back. It produces a nice soft light, with good color temperature (daylight) while emitting very little heat - the main reason why I bought it. I have, on occasion, taken it on-location with me, and the only way to do this without obnoxious setup and tear down is to just put the whole thing as is onto my car's back seat. It's really not a portable light - a Kino Flo would be much better for portability. However, if you need a low heat, high output soft light for mostly studio shooting and you are on a budget, this is an excellent buy. I need more light for some upcoming video projects so I'm going to buy another one of these.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but not for location shoots. I got two of these for tabletop photography in my home studio. I love the amount of light they put out, and that there are multiple on/off switches. The size is just right for some of the taller products that I shoot. A negative is that they are a bit cumbersome and heavy - a bit too much for my basic light stands. Sadly, I don't have space in my little room for wide-legged stands, which would probably be better. Also, with 9 bulbs each they would be a giant pain to take apart and reassemble repeatedly. I could see leaving them intact and placing them carefully in the trunk of the car if I needed to use them on location, but it would still be a challenge to get them to and fro.

Can I place LED bulbs in this?
    Asked by: Zar S.
The sockets are the standard Edison base so LED lamps with that base can be place here. However, it has not been tested by the manufacturer to confirm compatibility.

Do these have a slave function?

Do these have a slave function?
    Asked by: DeAndre
This a continuous light, so there is no optical slave on it like you would find on a studio strobe unit.

Are any other light modifiers compatible with this?
    Asked by: Bill E.
Tricky question. There, presently, is not a grid made just for the Octacool-9 Octabox. BUT, I found a 30 grid that works just fine from another manufacturer.

Can I store these lights and stand/light modifier in my floored attic without temperature control?
    Asked by: Jill A.
That's exactly where I store them, although my attic tends to stay fairly comfortable in the winter, warm in the summer. Insulated, but without AC or any direct heat. And I have them in a pelican case, which provides a little more temperature insulation. But there's not too many moving parts to this so not much to go wrong. Light bulb in cardboard cases. The light housing assembly, and the umbrella and soft light cover.

I know these are AC powered units, but is there a long lasting battery pack or power source I could use with these in a remote outdoor location (no AC or DC power sources available)?
    Asked by: Anonymous
This light uses too much power. You might want to use a low-noise portable generator instead.

In a church setting... we have platform LED warm white lights that are mounted a bit high. I need something low to soften eye socket and neck shadows. But these CF lights are daylight white. What is going to be the effect of mixing warm white Chauvet LED ellipsoidals up top, with these daylight whites pointed slightly upwards (chest or waist high)? Another question is how to space these out across 10ft - is that 2, 3 or even 4? The set is a group discussion we'll start video shooting soon.
    Asked by: James
I would strongly would advise against mixing color temperatures, if you are using daylight LEDs up top and want to use these as fill you likely be surprised by their output. Keep in mind that these lights do not have a dimmer (you can turn on only a few of the bulbs but if you truly don't need so much light it may be worthwhile to consider the Impact Octacool-6 instead)

Would these lights fit Westcotts 36 inch Octo Rapid Box with Bowen's mount? <a href= target= _blank ></a>
    Asked by: Dee V.
No, it is not compatible. And that light only uses the box it comes with.
