    Wolverine Data PicPac II reviews

160GB PicPac II Digital Camera and Camcorder Portable Backup is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Basic, lacks control The PicPac works ok if you follow instructions to the word. You must start copying a CF card without the AC adapter plugged in, then if you want to use AC power rather than it's internal rechargeable battery, you can then plug the AC adapter in AFTER the copying begins. It looses charge when not plugged in, and you don't want it to run out of battery power while it's in the middle of a copy to disk. It is slow when copying a CF card to its hard drive. Each time a CF card is inserted and copied, a new folder is created on the PicPac. If you copy a card, then continue shooting using that same card, then back it up again, it creates another folder that includes the pictures copied on the previous backup. You cannot delete any previous folders on the PicPac, it has no controls. Thus, using the PicPac without access to a computer may cause it to fill up with a lot of duplicates of your pictures. If you just back up a particular CF card just once, then the multiple folder issue would not be such a problem. You must connect it to a computer's USB to access it's copied folders, and then manipulate the folders using the computer. The PicPac's screen is overly complicated yet difficult to verify that a copy has been complete. The screen readout shows nothing about stored folders. Once copying is complete, it does say 100% on-screen, but then the message disappears. So if you leave it for a while and come back to it after the copying was completed, you're not sure it has actually completed the copy sucessfully. The only thing the screen tells you is whether it's copying, and how many gigabites of space are left on it's disk. To verify that a copy is complete, you have to know about how many gigabites you're copying, then add that amount to the gigabite readout from the last time you copied. So, OK for $ bucks, it does the basic backup, but you may want something else (but more expensive) with more flexibility. If you shoot in the field with a laptop, back up your files to the laptop -- there would be no need for this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't travel without it! I used to have a small netbook to back-up my pics. Having since sold that and getting an ipad, which I am struggling on how to back-up my pics in, I decided to get one of these when I went out on a recent trip. Doing back-ups are easy and it is small & light. Gives me more peace of mind as I value the pics I take during trips. I highly recommend this tool for travelling photographers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic! Saves a lot of money. Because there is no need to purchase a new UDMA card. The battery could be a little better, but all in all, this is a great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Call it peace of mind For years I have traveled the world making images...always worrying that I would lose my memory cards or find they failed. For just about $100, Wolverine let's me relax and shoot. When downloaded recently, all my images were just as I shot them. Should have done this years ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works well, even smaller than expected This product has performed well. It is small & light. Recharges quickly. Enough capacity to cover our needs on a two week vacation. Can be recharging and transferring images at same time. (This wasn't so with the iPod we had recently been using for storage while traveling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well I purchased to take on a trip where I will not have a computer and wanted some way of backing up my SD card so the pictures were more than one place. I have tested it and it seems to work well. More later after I return from the trip.
