Must-have card for people photography
Behind us is an era of careful permissions and releases for publishing one's images of people, and today seems to be the era of selfies and photographing everything that moves, and 5 seconds later posting it to Pinterest or YouTube. So, it's complicated to know when a release is truly required, or legally enough. That said... These are the exact same release cards I carried around with me back in the days when print media ruled and serious photographers were experimenting with 'new media', from Tri-X to Velvea, and publication in magazines or stock photo agencies was the Holy Grail.. Today: How many Facebook or YouTube images are with written consent? The cost of no permission may sting. Anyhow, I've long carried my last remaining, now shaggy model releases in my camera bags and suitcase, rarely using but still thinking I may just see some awesome image suddenly appear, and I want to be sure I have permission to use a 'model''s likeness. This is a simple, bare-bones release/permission form, but having one signed is better than not, IMHO, esp. when publishing for a fee, as opposed to on one's wall (real or virtual). I bought a pack of these cards, divided them up between camera bags and suitcase, a few now left on the shelf,The cost: negligible. Whereas not having a release when needed can hurt. Being ready, should a release may be needed is, as they say: Precious.
