Odyssey FZ1004 Reviews

Nice case, but...

I bought this case to downsize from a much larger case. Overall, I was pleased with the case, but there are a few details that kept me from rating it higher. First of all, let me be clear that I am rating the PRODUCT and NOT B&H Photo. Every purchase I have made with B&H has been exceptional! With that said, about the Odyssey rack case: There were several tee nuts that were not flush with the interior laminate. Two of them actually came out when I backed the bolts out which meant that they weren't installed correctly. I had higher hopes for the quality of an Odyssey case (this isn't my first case from Odyssey). Next, The angle of the top is a little less than it should be IF you have a mixer that you plan to install at the very back of the top of the rack. I say this because the back panel blocks the lowest line input/output on the mixer if it's more than a few inches deep (see photos). To fix this, you can install the mixer more toward the front but that eliminates the ability to use the space in front of the mixer for anything else (e.g. midi or light controller). You can't install anything behind it either since that would also interfere with the cables. So, in essence, you lose some of the top rack space as a result. Again, it's not poor quality, but I'm just not quite sure how this design passed Odyssey's R&D process. Overall, I am pleased with the case, but slightly disappointed. I haven't traveled with it yet, but it feels strong and sturdy with equally strong hardware. If it weren't for the angle preventing the use of the lowest cable connections on my mixer (and losing the top rack space as a result), I would have looked past the loose tee nuts and rated it with 5 stars. But, unfortunately, I can't get past the inability to use the rack to the capacity I was hoping for. FYI, my Behringer mixer is 6 inches deep at the back end (where cables are). It is 14 inches from front to back (I believe equivalent to 8U spaces). If your mixer is less than 6 inches deep at the back end, this may work well for you. Best of luck!
