WhiBal WB7-PK overview

  • 1Description

The WhiBal White Balance G7 Pocket Kit comes with a white balance card that is small enough to fit in a wallet or shirt pocket. It also comes with a lanyard (cord) for wearing around the neck. This way you can be sure you'll always have it with you when you need it as opposed to leaving it somewhere in a drawer. Because color temperature varies under different lighting sources (i.e. sunlight, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent) it's important to use a white balance card for accurate color representation under any type of light.

WhiBal white balance cards are designed to be neutrally gray throughout their surface, are water and scratch proof, and are individually tested by an industrial spectrophotometer before they leave the factory. For it to work properly the card must be held at an angle where there's no reflection bouncing off of it. For this reason the card, which in itself is very low reflective, features a highly reflective sticker that shows the photographer at a glance whether the card is held properly.

To achieve maximum results it's best to shoot in RAW and then use a RAW conversion program such as Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom to adjust the picture. With a RAW conversion software you can also white balance at once a group of pictures taken under the same lighting conditions. Included in the kit are a stand for placing the card upright on a wall or horizontal surface. Also included is a Tyvek sleeve for protecting the card in between uses.

Fits in your shirt pocket (same size as an American business card) so you will actually use it rather than have it in your bag.
Waterproof and scratchproof material
Comes with convenient stand for ease of setup on tables or flat surfaces. No need for someone to hold the WhiBal.
Each card is individually measured with a precision spectrophotometer to certify that it meets or exceeds stringent specifications
The Gray card is designed for low reflectivity, except that the sticker is intentionally highly reflective so that maximum TrueBlack Blackpoint level may be achieved by observing for maximum glare point and then backing the angle down.
Can be used to set white balance reference, black point and white point.
Fits shirt pocket or can hang on studio hook or lanyard

    WhiBal WB7-PK reviews

White Balance G7 Pocket Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 61.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from WhiBal White Balance G7 Pocket Kit The WhiBal pocket card is very useful for shots on the go. You don't need a large box or holder, just keep it in your pocket or camera case. It's an approx. 2x3 card with neutral gray, white, and black areas on it. Put it in your first shot with the subject, then take subsequent shots as usual. When you need to use White Balance tool in software to check or balance colors, just click on your first photo with the WhiBal card in it. It's small and durable, don't have to worry about keeping it dry. It's not so great when you would really rather have a large black and white area, but that's what the larger WhiBal products are for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT product for perfect white balance The WhiBal card is GREAT! It is very accurately balanced to digital camera gray. If you take a photo of the card under the same lighting that your subject is under, you can use any post processing tool to adjust the white balance to match. There are small patches of black and white on the card, too, for fine tuning. If you have a Nikon and want to fill your frame with a gray card to use your white balance PRE feature, you will need a WhiBal card larger than this pocket version. I tend not to make the PRE process my own workflow, as I find it more convenient to use this pocket card and get it into a quick photo, but the company offers both approaches. They have very helpful videos on their site, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WhiBal G7 White Balance Card Used this product for the first time, and found it easy to work with. Having a referance White to work from I was able to determine what was the correct setting for the lighting conditions at the time. Taking Raw photo's made it easy to select the White and Black settings to know that my Skin colour was correct. This card worked well both with day light, and flash photo's. It was small light weight, and easy to clip to my camera strap using the table clip. Having the lanyard makes it easy to slip into a shirt pocket when not needed, so it is always with you.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works too well? Photos are sterile. Depending on what you use the WhiBal for, it may not be for you. I bought it because my camera's auto balance is often a bit blue, but I'm finding WhiBal makes every shot a bit too sterile, cold, clinical. The WhiBal makes everything look like it was shot under perfect full spectrum light, which is of course what it is designed to do. But a picture taken in warm setting sunlight will lose ALL of it's orangey yellow charm. An 18% gray card is working better for me, more accurate than my camera's auto balance, but it doesn't drastically alter colors from what I'm seeing in real life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easily and accurately set your white bal Very easy to use, just take a picture of it in the same lighting as what you're shooting. Then, in post processing, go to the image with the Whi-Bal card in it, and use it to set your white balance for the rest of the shots. If your lighting keeps changing, then just shoot another shot with it. The kit has a little s-clip carabiner that doubles as a stand in case you need to place it and step back. The plastic cards are pretty durable, though you still need to exercise reasonable care with them. The neutral area is actually the card itself, rather than a sticker or paint. The black and white areas also help set your dynamic range. Easy enough to slip one in your pocket, or in a pocket of your camera bag so you can have it on hand wherever you're shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Handy White Balance Card It is handy to have this accurate device around your neck or in your bag. It's amazing the difference it makes adjusting white balance with lightroom. Outside of lenses, and Speedlites, this is the SINGLE most essential tool I've ever bought. Some quibble about the price, but considering the individually measured and certified quality of every card, it's a steal. I can't imagine any photographer who's serious about color balance EVER being without it. Google WhiBal and watch Michael Tapes' video tutorials. They go into great practical and technical depth, simply and efficiently, and make the case far better than I can for why you need a WhiBal. (No, I'm not affiliated with WhiBal in any way.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Saved me time Putting this in one of the product shots in the studio and then clicking on the gray part of it in the image with the white balance dropper in Adobe Camera Raw immediately gave me the correct colors. This saved me a lot of time not having to mess around with all the sliders trying to guess the right colors. I didn't give it five stars because I thought it was a little too expensive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Convenient What can I say. It's small enough to always have on you. I leave my camera set in auto-wb, and simply snap a frame with this card, as I see the wb may be changing. In Lightroom, I point to the frame with the card, to pull a balance. Once less thing to think about on location!
