AKG K240 Reviews

Yes I would mix a whole album on these

Used to swear by Sony then realized they had a too much upper mids. Then I switched to Beyer, but they had a NOTCH in the upper mids! Finally settled on these and their more expensive sibling with the similar model number. Next to my Grados these are some of the most honest headphones I've used. They do not have cavernous low end or soaring eagle highs. They are flat. I find I can mix stuff using a decent converter and these phones and that translates well to playback on my car stereo, my laptop, my phone etc. It's a bad idea to think you can mix something on headphones sure. You may end up with phase issues, or low end issues you can only hear on real speakers, in a room. That said, these do the job in a pinch. If you want to track hip hop or R&B vocals with a track blasting in your earholes these are not it. They are open back, so hihat and snare will be picked up by the microphone too. Not a lot, but just enough to show up if you lean on a compressor to even out vocals and give them a bit more 'lips and teeth'. Another wonderful thing about these is that you can wear them for HOURS. They are not heavy, nor do they squeeze your brain out of your head. They also don't give me that sweaty itchy ear thing some do. Downsides; weak headphone amps won't do these justice. I often have to crank mine up to 75% or more to get reasonable level. They do not fold. After a year or two of use you may find the little foam piece inside coming loose. If you drop them a lot they may break. There are less flat headphones out there that are more durable, fold, and have sealed back. But honestly, I can't think of another pair I'd rather have at this price. You gotta spend 3-4 times the amount to get a better sounding phone.

I Love them!

I've been a recording musician for 3 decades and I swear by these, I've owned 3 sets for them in the last 25 years and I still have 2 of them. I also listen to hi-fi music with them. They were designed in 1975 so they're doing something right! Head to head with Sennheiser HD280 Pro the AKG's win for overall sound and bass. The Senn's have a better midrange. I play bass, guitar, keys, electric cello and bouzouki and these give me exactly what I want. They also give you an accurate representation of what the final mix is going to sound like. You don't want anything hi-fi for that.

These are perfect for me !!

I gave this same model a 5-star review when I bought my first pair around 2008, citing excellent sound quality for the low price. I recently ordered a NEW pair because my old ones were getting a little worn. I immediately noticed they didn't sound nearly as good as my 14 year old pair, even after a lengthy break-in. The sound was thin and the construction just felt a lot cheaper. On looking them over and comparing them to my old ones I noticed they were conspicuously missing the "MADE IN AUSTRIA" label on the left ear piece. "They didn't" I said to myself. I look at the package and it says "MADE IN CHINA". They did, apparently. If you're going to buy a pair of these, or any other new products from AKG, keep it in mind that any reviews from a few years ago are essentially for a different product that no longer exists. They're about $50 cheaper than the ones I bought 14 years ago but the quality just isn't there anymore. At this price point I would recommend the Grado SR60 as the best value, with the Sony MDR series a close runner up.

Am on my third pair now since early 1980s as two puppies got ahold of the first two. For the money, I cannot believe that any headphones can compete against K240 Studio Headphones. If you are considering, just stop, place order, and experience musicality as you have never even imagined. I rated five stars, would have given 10!

Have had two pairs of K240 headphones. Without question, the best bang for the buck. Comfort, accuracy, and spatial imaging is hypnotic! Don't mull on these, buy them if you indeed, are a music lover. Reproduction accuracy is startling.

Is this comfortable?
Asked by: Jay S.
I've worn versions of this headphone for very long periods of time in the studio, but now that I'm not in the studio anymore, I've purchased them for my employees who want great sound and comfort and may be sitting and coding for long periods. I think they are a great set.

what is the difference between the AKG K 240 studio and the K 240 MK II headphones?
Asked by: Anonymous
Both the AKG K240 Studio and the K240 MKII use the same Varimotion 30mm XXL transducers, yet the frequency response curves are slightly different, with the MKII a little flatter (from reference-audio-analyzer website). The MKII comes with an extra coiled cable and an extra set of leatherette earpads. Both are made in China in 2021, and the retail price difference is $86.

Is it good for musicians(keys)
Asked by: Anonymous
I am a musician and home recording enthusiast. I had a pair of these headphones 20 years ago and I decided to buy them again. They are just really good, basic, headphones. Whether you play keys or other instruments should not be what makes you decide. Headphones should give an accurate, flat response for whatever music you listen to so you can make decisions about your tone. I really dont want to spend over $100 for headphones. I only use these at night (when its too quiet to listen to studio monitors or recording when you cant have the monitors bleed thru the track so these were really the choice that made the most sense for me.
