  • 1Description

When you need a medium-telephoto standard lens for everything from portraiture to sports, the fast Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Canon EOS Digital SLRs is a great solution. This large aperture beauty is designed with an SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and a glass mold element which yield first-class, sharp image captures with high contrast.

The 85mm f/1.4 has Sigma's HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) which provides fast, accurate and quiet autofocusing. The exterior of this lens is EX-finished which translates to a superior build and optical quality, enhanced handling and appearance. It comes with a petal-type hood to block out extraneous light. A dedicated hood adapter for cameras with an APS-C size image sensor is also included to expand the length of the hood for blocking out extraneous light more effectively.

This fast f/1.4 lens is great for capturing fast moving images, allowing you to use faster shutter speeds, and is what you want when shooting under low lighting conditions. This highly efficient lens has a nine blade circular diaphragm for creating pleasant out-of-focus highlights (bokeh) which is a major asset to portrait and wedding photographers.

Note: This lens is designed for use with full frame digital cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 127.5mm with most cameras.

Note: If the camera body does not support HSM, autofocus will not be available.

    Sigma 85mm f/1.4 reviews

85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 123.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Lense I love this lense, I use it for portraits only. Never tried it out on sports, or anything fast moving. Shoots nice and sharp at 2.8, from 1.4 - 2.5 the pictures tends to be on the softer side. I use a crop sensor camera Canon 7d. On my camera if its on AI SERVO MODE the auto focus tends to be a little unstable but like I said i use this lense for Portraits only i have no need to be in AI SERVO MODE. Overall I use the lense all the time its fast and sharp, but it is a little heavy. The built quality is nice and solid and its nice and round 77mm filter size. I did read a review that the glass will scratch easily so be careful and take care of your lense.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Bought Them Both, I bought both the Canon and Sigma and kept the Canon, barely.Sigma has faster auto focus and a better manual focus. It is as sharp as the Canon. I needed +6 micro adjustment on the Sigma and +7 on the Canon. I kept the Canon because I liked the weight of it, its 1.2 apature, but most importantly to me was the brighter viewfinder image. None of those reasons being worth an extra $1100.The Canon is in no way worth the money they ask for it. The Sigma is every bit as good as the Canon, and for $1100 cheaper. Great job Sigma. You won't be dissapointed if you can't afford the Canon and get this lens instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from better quality at half the price! I've owned several copies of both the V1 and V2 of the Canon 85MM f/1.2 lenses. I loved the image quality but thought that the dog slow AF was reason enough to get rid of them. I'd missed too many photos of my daughter running around. Enter, the Sigma 85mm f1.4. The AF absolutely destroys the Canon! The colors are every bit as pleasing and the OOF backgrounds (bokeh) are beautiful and really make the subject stand out. Shooting wide open has been incredible. Virtually no purple fringing compared to the Canon. I'd buy this lens again in a second! Now hurry up and release that 120-300mm f/2.8 with OS!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens I bought this lens almost 1 month ago to celebrate the people I have the privilege to work and play with. It's a joy to see their faces captured by such a high fidelity piece of hardware. I shoot using a Canon 70D and portraits are in breathtaking focus; depth of field is fantastic. I mainly use this lens to capture dinner party portraits and most of my candid shots are taken in low light, ie: candle light. The wide open aperture of this lens makes low light photography crisp and clear. I haven't run into any negative points since I started using this lens. It's as sharp and artful as advertised and expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow..I'm impressed! I bought this only because I can't justify the Canon 85 1.2L. I at one time owned the Canon version but couldn't keep it only because of the sheer cost associated with it and how often I actually shoot at 1.2. I waited for this lens to become available and tested by many before making the leap of faith with Sigma in this regard. This is my 2nd Sigma lens (first being 70-200) and so far this lens has exceeded my expectations in all regards. Right out of the box I tested this lens for 2 days and had stellar results across the board. This lens requires some practice to get it right at 1.4 but when you get it right you will know. Colors pop as well as sharpness and focus are on point!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond Expectations This lens is a high point for Sigma...perfect functioning with my Canon 7D and as sharp as my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM...What more can anyone hope for. I was shooting a family affair in a standard NY catering hall with the noted camera, lens and Canon Speedlite. Camera set to manual at f/1.4, shutter at 160th, ISO 100, Speedlite at ETTL, Focus was center point expansion, AWB===>ROCK ON-RESULTS WERE AMAZING Be Warned-The Depth of Field is no longer than nose to earlobe. I tested this with a yard stick at at 30 degree angle at 8 feet away and you can clearly see the DOF. Test this lens before assignment. It focused fast and accurately. The color and contrast are great. Canon and Nikon should be concerned just how good this lens is and at a fraction of the OEM price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really great 85mm To Start off, I'd like to say that I've owned a few 85L's over the years and a couple 85/1.8's as well. The Sigma 85 is has faster AF than the L, is just as sharp at f/1.4 and controls CA better. It just doesn't have f/1.2. I paid $ for the Sigma and would have had to pay $1100 more for the L, which to me is just silly. The AF on the Sigma 85 is a step above the AF of the Sigma 50mm, it doesn't stutter like the 50, it locks on right away and is as accurate as any Canon USM lens. I always feel very confident using it. If someone was going to give me either the 85L or the Sigma 85, I'd choose the L, just because F/1.2 renders it's own magic. But I know, after a while, I'd just sell the L, buy the Sigma and pocket a grand...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply amazing, Sigma = WINNING! People often criticize Sigma's quality control but I have been lucky to say that I have not run into any problems. I've used the Sigma 10-20mm and the Sigma 17-70 for quite some time when I was still shooting crop and I really had no complaints. I was leaning towards the 85L II and then heard about the Sigma 85. I looked at the samples on the Canon POTN forum and decided to give it a shot. The bokeh and colors renders beautifully and in my opinion, very similar to the 85L II. I found the Sigma 85 to focus quite a bit faster than the 85L II too which was an added bonus. Pair this 85 up with a 35L and you can shoot just about anything! Don't hesitate, give it a go, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
