Sony 24mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by a fast maximum aperture and high sharpness, the Sony Distagon T* 24mm f/2 ZA SSM Lens aims to be a go-to wide-angle prime for full-frame A-mount shooters. Using a Distagon optical design that incorporates two extra-low dispersion and two aspherical elements as well as the Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating, the 24mm is able to capture images with minimal aberrations and excellent contrast. Also, the f/2 maximum aperture allows photographers to create images with selective focus.

For fast, accurate autofocus, the 24mm f/2 is equipped with a Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) AF system. This lens also features a focus hold button and focus mode switch to provide fast access to common functions. Further enhancing focus performance is a rear focusing design, enabling a minimum focus distance of just 7.5". Additionally, it has a nine-blade circular diaphragm for smooth out-of-focus elements.

Based on the Zeiss Distagon optical concept, this lens uses a design with nine elements in seven groups that helps achieve the large maximum aperture of f/2 while helping to minimize vignetting and spherical aberrations.
A wide-angle prime designed for full-frame A-mount cameras, this 24mm can also be used on APS-C camera systems where it will provide a 36mm equivalent focal length.
The f/2 maximum aperture allowing users to create images with shallow depth of field effects and work in low-light conditions with relative ease.
Zeiss T* anti-reflective coatings have been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections in order to provide greater image clarity, contrast, and color fidelity.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) autofocus system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and contributes to more natural and intuitive manual focus control. The rear focusing design also helps achieve a close minimum focus distance of 7.5".
A focus hold button and focus mode switch are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 24mm f/2.0 reviews

Distagon T* 24mm f/2 ZA SSM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love my Sony CZ 24mm f2.0 lens I preordered this lens after long time of anticipation. The lens resolution is excellent; the file size from my Sony a700 is above 12 MB. The lens is slightly lighter than my CZ 85 f1.4 lens. Depth of field is nice. Silent motor that I can hardly hear, accurate fast focusing, no hunting. At 7.5 inch minimum focucing distance, you can use it as a close up lens. Having a large diameter, I thick helps minimize distortion associated with wide angle. This lens is great for outdoor landscape or buildings. Indoor, at equivalent focal length of 36mm on the a700 is great lens for group pictures. Drawback: it understandably consumes a lot of battery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best Sony Zeiss yet....seriously! I own all of the Sony Zeiss and Sony G lenses and use them extensively on my A900. All I can say is this is the best lens I have ever used - period. I suppose you'd need to upgrade to a Leica M system to find anything comparable. Having used Canon for 15 years, I can say that there isn't a lens in that lineup that can touch this lens for color, contrast and across the range sharpness in this focal length. It sports amazing build quality in a dense and formidable body. The lens itself is jewel like in construction. A Sony/Zeiss homerun! What don't I like about it? Nothing! I can't even complain about the price, since other manufacturers charge more for their fast 24mm lenses than Sony does for this gem. Just get one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You can judge this book by its cover I write for an online magazine and in the process of writing about restaurants I discovered that I did not have a wide angle lens to shoot the interior of the restaurants. I purchased this lens after doing much research and I have not been disappointed. I use Sony kit and this lens is as sharp as a tack, with great resolution, very little distortion and vibrant colours. And the best thing about this Carl Zeiss lens on a Sony is having autofocus. Very happy with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Probably the best 24 you can buy! I'm a professional photographer for over twenty years and for most of those years, shot Zeiss lenses on either Rolleiflexes or Hasselblads, I bought the Sony a900 the week it was released and, before that, shot the Canon 5D with Zeiss MF lenses. This is the lens I wanted when I first moved to Sony and it sure took long enough for them to release it. Fortunately, the wait was really worth it. It's actually my first ZA lens as I mostly shoot wider and did not want to deal with the heavy ZA zooms or any compromises in absolute image quality. This ZA 24 really deliver the goods. Color saturation, contrast (and micro-contrast) and sharpness are all there in spades from wide open at F2! Furthermore, unlike any zoom or even other MF Zeiss lenses this wide, this lens shows very little distortion or vignetting and close to zero CA. Stop down to 5.6-8 and you will be rewarded with sharp corners as well. Outstanding performance! If you can get this lens, buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very very good This lens is very sharp and has no distortion, the wide view is superb. It is a top of the line piece of glass. The build quality is excellent and I like the small size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it. It is such a well made lens, solid, easy to use, I was trying to shoot a picture hanging on the wall in an interior room on my computer screen, I can get so close to my computer screen and crop the picture on the wall, I got exactly what I wanted. I was debating should I buy th less expensive E mount 24 mm f/1.8 lens, it is much lighter, but I don't like the filter screw mechanism, finally I got A mount 24 mm f/2, I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Sony Ziess Wide Angle Prime I have tried many different wide end lenses, and this newly produced Carl Ziess wide angle lens for Sony ( 24mm f/2.0 )is the one I got finally satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens Great Sharpness, works best in manual focus, very little to no distortion at the right distance, and great durable design. Best Lens I've used for wide angle and landscape photos.
