Canon 8-15mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens from Canon delivers 180° diagonal angle of view images for all EOS SLR cameras with imaging formats ranging from full-frame to APS-C. When the lens is used with full-frame cameras you can choose between a circular fisheye image or full-frame image by using the zoom.

When used with EOS bodies featuring APS-C or APS-H sensors, the lens produces a more traditional, full frame fisheye view. A zoom-lock mechanism on the lens body allows the range to be limited to the focal length that ensures the best possible full-frame view without unsightly vignetting around the edge. 'C' and 'H' markings can be found next to the zoom operation ring, indicating the wide-angle zoom position where vignette-free shooting is possible with either sensor. For filmmakers and photographers who want the look and feel only possible with extreme wide angle and fisheye photography, the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM is a world-class choice.

With its Ultrasonic Motor (USM), and Floating Focus System the lens offers fast auto focus even down to a close 6.2" (0.16 m). The lens features UD glass for suppression of chromatic aberration, a Subwavelength coating for reduced ghosting, a Fluorine coating that keeps soiling, smears and fingerprints to a minimum, has full-time manual focus for instant switching from AF to Manual operation, and is built to the standards of the amazing Canon L-series of lenses. The rear gel holder holds up to 3 pre-cut filters. This means the finest optics, the best construction and the best performance available, all in a lens designed to stimulate creativity and deliver stunning images every time.

Canon 8-15mm f/4.0 reviews

EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 226.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm in love with this lens! The other day, I went out on a photo shoot to exercise my new Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM lens. This lens produces circular 180º fisheye images with full-frame cameras at 8mm, and diagonal 180º fisheye images at 15mm. With APS-C and other crop-frame cameras, the lens produces 180º fisheye images only. Using it on my Canon EOS 5D Mark III–a full-frame camera–I am able to get both fully circular as well as diagonal 180º fisheye images. I have been able to capture landscapes in an entirely new way, adding a great new dimension to my work. The sharpness is excellent for this kind of lens and, although the cap tends to come off a lot, the results are amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera, Garbage Lens Cap I had been looking at this lens for quite some time and decided that it was too expensive for my uses. I got lucky and received one as a gift and have had so much fun with the lens! I particularly love taking night landscape photos, and this lens is unbelievable for that purpose. The lens cap (as evident reading other 3rd party reviews) is absolutely terrible. From the first time I removed the lens from the box the cap came right off. It barely stays on with normal use. If the camera is around your neck and you hop, the Cap falls off. Great lens, very frustrating lens cap (exasperated by the fact that no UV lens cap can be used with the fisheye design).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens I mostly shoot landscape photography and bought this lens to be used with my new Canon 5D since the Canon 10-22mm was useless in this camera. Excellent lens that exceeds all my expectations and fun to use it too. Amazing colors and sharpness. For creative landscape photography all you have to do is play with the horizon line to avoid distortion so you can take real wide angle pictures without going totally fisheye, unless you really want to go totally creative and play with the fisheye at 8mm. Which is amazing too!!! When shooting close to subjects, careful with your feet or they will show in the picture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb lens! I bought this lens for those occasional sky-wide sunrises and sunsets, when no other lens can fully capture the beauty. I also love to do wide-angle night photography of the Milky Way, and often with foreground terrain and objects illuminated by the moon. Star images are the most telling method of lens image quality over the format short of USAF 1951 bar target testing. To test this, I took my first Milky Way pictures with this lens a few nights ago, and I am VERY impressed by the tight, sharp star images, even at f/4 and at different zoom settings. See accompanying picture - Canon 60Da, 30 second exposure, f/4, ISO 2000.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Lens - But Lens Cap is GARBAGE Amazing fisheye lens. Very sharp for my panorama business. I gave it a 3 because of the stupid lens cap which is pure garbage, it's even worst than the cap on my old 15 mm f 2.8 Fish eye (which I had to sell sadly in order to afford this one). The slightest rubbing of the cap against your bag material or body will make it fall of, in which case you will have yourself a nicely scratched $ lens which will make a great door stopper! I almost can't believe Canon would release this cap in this day and age. Pure garbage! Lens gets a 5/5 from me, but the cap is a -100/5...and could destroy this lens completely!CANON are you listening?????????

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No other lens can capture more info 180 degrees...that says it all. With a single shot you can capture just about everything in front of you. I've learned to live with the precariousness of the front glass and lens cap - minor problems compared to the awesome images this lens can deliver. Be careful with close-ups, though; you might be closer to your subject than you realize. I use it on a 5D MkII, mainly for architectural photos. I shoot wider than I actually need and crop down later in Photoshop to loose the inevitable distortion at the edges.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Lens, not for everyone... I'm primarily a sports photographer, usually looking through some long glass... this lens certainly isn't for everyone, but I've had a lot of fun playing with it! I've used it at a wedding, got some great things putting it on a body atop a monopod and remote triggering the shutter... I'm REALLY anxious to get it to a football game and shoot the entire stadium during a home team touchdown! You certainly have to think about how to come up with something interesting with this wide of a view... and I'm using it on a 1.6 crop body... anxious to try it on a full frame and get the circular vingnetting!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens This lens works with both Full Frame Cameras (sensor) and APS-C Cameras. You get the full circle with the full frame sensor but do not with the APS-C sensor. The zoom is really to allow you to work between the different cameras. You have more options with the full frame sensor. There is a designation on the lens for you to know how far you may zoom out with ea type of camera so you do not get any vignetting. I took it on a hike up to the wave in AZ and loved it. I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a fish eye.
