Canon 400mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Pairing a favored super telephoto focal length with a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM is a Canon L-series optic well-suited for outdoor, wildlife, and sports applications. The fast maximum aperture enables extensive control over depth of field for isolating subjects using selective focus, and it also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions. Two fluorite elements are used in the optical design to help reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color accuracy and a Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality when working in backlit conditions.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 400mm f/2.8 is also characterized by its advanced four stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has three separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a removable rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 640mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Two fluorite elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Three distinct IS modes are available: standard single-shot mode, a panning-optimized mode, and a mode that only activates the Image Stabilizer during the exposure.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to three different ranges to suit different applications: 8.9-23', 23'-infinity, or 8.9'-infinity.
A Power Focus setting is available, and allows you to electronically and smoothly adjust your focus position to suit video recording. This setting utilizes a dedicated ring in front of the main focusing ring and allows you to use one of two different focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon 400mm f/2.8 reviews

EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Performance The Canon 400 mm f 2.8 MK II is outstanding in all aspects. The f 2.8 opening provides superb images wide open, the weight has been significantly reduced allowing for its handheld use for photographing birds in flight for up 3-4 hour (personal limits). It weight reduction also is a great advantage when carrying in the field with a tripod. I use this lens with the 5DIII and the autofocus performance is incredible delivering a 95-98% of in-focus images. When used with a 1.4X Canon MKIII image quality degradation is not noticed. I replaced the foot with one that provides a lower height profile, lighter weight and a built-in groove for mounting to ballheads without the need to use a mounting plate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect comes with a price After years of lugging heavy lenses back and forth on the NFL sidelines, this lens is a real treat due to it's reduced weight. This lens can actually be held held. While I don't see a tremendous difference in sharpness over my previous 400 2.8, the aesthetic quality of the bokeh seems to be more pleasing than the earlier version. The colors seems to be richer with added saturation. I've also added the 1.4 III which doesn't really seem to slow the lens down that much in terms of focusing speed. I'd rate this lens a 9.9, I'd give it a perfect ten but everything has room for improvement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 8.5 lbs and 2.7m MFD !!! The old 12 pounders are too heavy for my lightweight tripod and gimbal (Gitzo Backpacker and Jobu Jr. 3). For the way I shoot (near and far with one lens), the 600ii has an unacceptably long 4.5m Minimum Focus Distance (MFD). Verses 8.5 lbs and 2.7m MFD, I can handhold for a nearby butterfly and quickly switch to a distant Grizzly! And, the new 4-stop, 3-mode Image Stabilization (IS) is a noticeable improvement over the old 2-stop, 2-mode IS. I use the 2x iii with no noticeable loss in quality on the 50 megapixel 5DsR. I'm getting old, so this will likely be my last big lens purchase, but I do look forward to more megapixels in future cameras to push the limits of this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing beast This is amazing lens. Output is great, no matter, if you mount pixel packed APS-C, fullframe body or combine it with extenders. Big tripod and stable gimbal head is a must for this lens. Lens cap is much better than previous generation of lenses. Weight with hood, cap and lenscoat: 4.5kg Even when used with extender (iii generation), output is perfect. For sample pictures with extenders, you can see examples in my review of extenders (it's written in Slovak, but you don't have to understand to look at pictures). http://www.ephoto.sk/fototechnika/recenzie/objektivy/telekonvertory-canon--iii-generacia/

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens is absolutely amazing. I use this lens for wildlife photography and the sharpness is absolutely amazing. I use it on a 1DMKIV and 1DX bodies. The focus is fast and the quality of the wildlife photos is absolutely over the top. I bought this lens rather then a 500 or 600mm lens as it gives me options with the new 1.4 extender. Even with the extender on the lens the focus is fast and there is little difference if any in sharpness. For those that can afford it you will be glad you invested in this lens. In combination with the 1DX, I can now take great shots in low light situations that are sharp without noise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Awesome! I photograph wildlife and professional cycling. When I went to South Africa in 2010 I rented the older version of 300mm F 2.8. This lens is 400mm but about the same weight and with more functionality built in. The clarity is beyond belief. As the lens is a 2.8 I can use my 2x doubler and the image stabilization and autofucus are still enabled on my 5dmkII. 800mm of clarity for incredible images of birds and wildlife is what I was looking for and exactly what I got. B&H shipped and delivered it promptly and it arrived on time with everything arriving in perfect order. Expensive but worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it! I am a Canon shooter, so I'm a bit biased, but even amongst L-series glass, this lens stands out. I rented it to try and fell in love. It's heavy, but the front piece of glass is the size of a salad plate. The AF is so accurate, it made my 5D Mark III better, and I didn't know that could happen. What really blows you away is the tack-sharp handheld shots you can get. I used it with and without a 2x, and didn't notice any change in quality. It's just amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magnificent! It took me quite some time to decide on which new lens I should buy to replace my old 500mm/f.4.0L workhorse, for sports and wildlife. I thought the older 400/2.8L was too heavy and I had the same thoughts of the 600/4.0L. Even though I do not handhold very much, I still want to be able to do so and the stuff needs to be carried. The 28% weight reduction on the new 400, with the f/2.8 max aperture, combined with 1.4X III and 2.0X III extenders and a 5D MkIII and 7D house, gave me in my view maximum performance and maximum flexibility. I also use a Gitzo GT3542LS tripod, with a Wimberley Gimbal head II and a Gitzo GM5561T monopod. Combinations very hard to beat. The new IS system is exceptional and the optical performance is as good as it gets. I am also very impressed with the AF speed and accuracy with both the 7D and the 5DMkIII. Build quality is second to none. Ive used it for 3 weeks now and not a single negative experience so far.
