    Novation UltraNova reviews

UltraNova Analog Modelling Synthesizer is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dynamic & Inspirational I've only had a few hours to mess with this board but I have to say I love it. I haven't made it through even a third of the patches without creating a little melody. Sync's right up to Apple Logic Express. The price is great too!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great sounds but poor pitch bend performance for fast player The usual novation excellent sounds but as a performance synth this is let down by the very slow response from the pitch wheel. I can do my fast Jan Hammer licks when I connect an old EMU xboard 49 midi keyboard to it but when using the built in wheels there is a dreadful lag before the wheel movement is interpreted into an actual pitch change - at a guess many hundreds of milliseconds. This is a serious limitation for fluent players and should be addressed in future products if it cannot be solved with firmware updates. If you just play slow no pro...blem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really ties the room together. I purchased this piece of gear so that i'd be able to control my Dave Smith Tetra and use my laptop for performance (in addition to having a convenient portable stand-alone synth). success on all fronts. my only complaint is that the Ultranova doesn't have MIDI soft Thru. if it did, i'd be able to fully utilize all the functions of my keyboard rig without my laptop. if the MIDI functionality were better i'd have given 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Synth! I am in a band and use the Ultranova to play live and record. It is actually really easy to get started and the menus are easy to navigate. I also have a seperate MIDI keyboard and I'm able to run the sound straight into the Ultranova allowing me to only need one channel for all my equipment. It is well built, beautiful looking, and the sound is very powerful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Little Synth.. I have been playing Keyboard for years now, and finally decided to add asynth to my gear list to expand the possibiities for Sound cfreation / editing. Let me tell you something this synth has a lot of twinking options and very solid Analog type of sound engine, so far very happy with it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing- noise, not music! Maybe it's me, but this instrument seems only to be a sound-effects and synth module, not a standard music keyboard? Interesting sounds, but unable to play standard tunes, just synth, perhaps hip-hop. Requires independent drum/rhythm module/drum machine. Most impressive video clips I've seen of this instrument are making use of multiple synths, drum machines, rhythm modules. 2 Stars for synth value. Unusable for standard music play.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Synth!! This is a great all-in-one synth. I use it as an audio interface, controller, and of course as a synth. It works great within Ableton Live and controls any third party plugin well with automap. I would recommend this to anyone trying to get an audio interface and controller. You can make some real cool sounds with the vocoder running it through the synth and then through a third party plugin.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Synth / One Major Flaw My UltraNova review would be rated at 5 Stars, if not for my particular application, need, and style of playing. If you have no plans to use the Pitch Wheel for precise, real-time, live performance, pitch-bending leads, or harmonizing (with guitar) leads, you can skip this review, and trust that the dozens of other 4 and 5 Star reviews for the UltraNova (all over the Internet) are quite accurate. This review is going to cover the ONLY thing that NO other reviewers have addressed, or are aware of. Not even Novation was aware of this issue until I addressed it to them. And that issue is, the real-time performance and operation of the Pitch Wheel. I purchased the UltraNova specifically for 2 reasons. (1) Because it has full sized Pitch and Mod Wheels, rather than a Joystick controller. And (2) for playing precise 'guitar-type' (multiple pitch-bending) leads on stage and in the studio. In my 40 plus years of playing synthesizers, playing leads and covering guitar parts (on keyboards), I would have never imagined that a production synthesizer would be sold with such a major design flaw. A flaw that wouldn't effect the majority of keyboard / synthesizer players, but a flaw that renders the UltraNova useless for my intended purpose. Of every synth I've ever owned or played that has a Pitch Wheel or Joystick, they've all had instantaneous reaction to movement of the pitch controller. The UltraNova Pitch Wheel will bend notes up & down, but NOT in real time! Unbelievably, there is a very noticeable latency (delay) between the Pitch Wheel movement and the sound output of the UltraNova, no matter what patch you use. When I brought this to the attention of Novation, they told me that was the first they've ever heard of such an issue. The service tech said he'd look into it and call me back. Three hours later, he called me back and said, You're absolutely right! Then he went on to say that it was brought to the attention of the design team and would be taken into consideration for future releases of the UltraNova. If your style or technique of playing a synthesizer leans towards Jan Hammer or Jordan Rudess, this synth is not for you. The UltraNova is a beautiful instrument with a multitude of totally astonishing sounds! Unfortunately, the MAIN reason I purchased it, is the ONLY thing it's incapable of. Real-time performance of the Pitch Wheel.
