Acratech Long Lens Head
Key Features
  • Supports Lenses as Long as 600mm f/4.0
  • Arca-Style Quick-Release Clamp
  • CNC-Machined
  • Engraved Degree Markings
The Acratech Long Lens Head is designed to support super-telephoto lenses as long as 600mm f/4.0. The CNC-machined Long Lens Head weighs less than 1 lb and features an Arca-style quick-release clamp that's compatible with plates from manufacturers such as Arca-Swiss, Kirk, R.R.S., and many others.

The clamp is indexable, which means it can be rotated in 90° increments by loosening the rubberized knob. This enables easy use of cameras without lenses that have lens collars, and facilitates 90° sideways tilt (rather than front-to-back tilt). While the head is specifically designed for use with extremely long telephoto lenses that are mounted with a lens collar, this feature ensures that even if you're using multiple cameras in the field, you don't need to transport other heads besides the Long Lens Head when you want to mount a camera body (with a smaller lens) directly to your tripod & head.

The tension control is fully adjustable to suit heavier and lighter loads, and the head tilts 90° in two directions. Degree markings are engraved, for precise control over panoramic adjustments. All knobs are secured so they cannot vibrate loose and fall off.

Love this head. Super well made. Durable and precise. It can support a lot of weight too. Never had any problems with it.

Compact and lightweight

As a lightweight and compact alternative to a gimbal head, this works well. And great for travel. It is not quite so secure as a gimbal. You can use tension to stop it being too floppy. But with the center of gravity above the pivot, you need to be careful. As the lens gets further away from level, the moment increases. So the rig can flop. Best to remember to tighten the tension if you take your hands off the camera. Apart from that, works great. Best used in conjunction with a levelling base. (But so is a gimbal head.) It can also be used for ordinary lenses, but if that is your only use, a simple ball head is more convenient.

As good as advertised

I have only used it a couple of times (I got it last week), but it is as good as advertised. The large bubble level realy makes it easy to have it properly leveled. I have it mounted on a fastbowl tripod and so far have only used it with short (14-30mm and 24-70mm) and mid range (70-200mm) lenses on a mirrorless camera, so cannot comment on any creeping, which some people mentioned when they used it with long/heavy lenses. It work well in sub-zero temps and during a snow fall (i.e. the knobs were easy to operate using gloves and did not freeze).

It appears well engineered, but is it worth the nearly $400 paid (tax included) over a good $200 Ball Head? That's debatable. Would have been nice to have the proper paperwork included in the box, as the included instruction sheet wasn't closely related to the product. It's a keeper, as it will serve my purpose for my panorama photographs

Going from a ball head to this and so far not looking back.

Very High Quality

This is an extremely high quality and well thought out and simple to use tripod head. It is surprisingly light weight as well. I think it will last me forever and I will actually enjoy using it, which is unusual for tripod head which I normally find fiddly and irritating.

What is the difference between this Long Lens Head 1160 and the Panoramic Head 1165?
Asked by: Bruce
The Panorama Head has degree marking on the tilt axis and a pointer ring on the panning base. These features allow you to do multi row panoramas but it can also be used as a long lens head. It is a Long Lens Head with added features.

Yes, all of our tripod heads fit all standard photographic tripods. Our tripod heads have a 3/8" thread and also include a reducer bushing to fit smaller 1/4" tripod threads.

This may be a dumb question but how do you determine you have returned the head to completely level once you have tilted it?
Asked by: Zachary
If the bubble level on the inside is level, your rotation will be level. To level the top, use the level in your camera. If you are shooting an older camera without an in camera level, there are hots hoe levels that can be purchased to level the top. Our panorama head has degree markings on the tilt, with zero markers on both sides. Maybe you should consider that unit.

Can the Arca clamp be removed and an RRS lever clamp substituted for it?
Asked by: Albert
The Quick Release Clamp can be removed with an Allen wrench, but you would have a 3/8" diameter hole without threads in it. We will soon have a Lever Quick Release Clamp for our Long Lens Heads and our Panoramic Heads.

Does this come with a quick release clamp or do I need to purchase one?
Asked by: Kevin
The quick release clamp is built into the unit, and operates very well. It will swivel 90 degrees, as well, by loosening and retightening. Your camera/lens needs its own plate to fit into the clamp. This is a great unit. Used with D850 and 150-600 Tamron G2 lens in Botswana and South Africa, and it held up well. It is lightweight but holds even fairly heavy equipment very solidly.
