The Acratech Long Lens Head is designed to support super-telephoto lenses as long as 600mm f/4.0. The CNC-machined Long Lens Head weighs less than 1 lb and features an Arca-style quick-release clamp that's compatible with plates from manufacturers such as Arca-Swiss, Kirk, R.R.S., and many others.

The clamp is indexable, which means it can be rotated in 90° increments by loosening the rubberized knob. This enables easy use of cameras without lenses that have lens collars, and facilitates 90° sideways tilt (rather than front-to-back tilt). While the head is specifically designed for use with extremely long telephoto lenses that are mounted with a lens collar, this feature ensures that even if you're using multiple cameras in the field, you don't need to transport other heads besides the Long Lens Head when you want to mount a camera body (with a smaller lens) directly to your tripod & head.

The tension control is fully adjustable to suit heavier and lighter loads, and the head tilts 90° in two directions. Degree markings are engraved, for precise control over panoramic adjustments. All knobs are secured so they cannot vibrate loose and fall off.

Long Lens Head is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tension knob too weak. Otherwise, great. I mainly bought this over the Kirk and RRS monopod heads due to the dedicated tension knob. Unfortunately, the maximum tension is not quite strong enough to support my 600mm f4. It does fine when the lens is parallel to the ground. However, tilting up or down causes the friction to become noticeably weaker to the point that the body/lens flop down with a thud. With that said, I am not returning it. I will just add a little tension to the locking knob and forget about it. Not ideal, but I can live with it. I am primarily using the head on a monopod. My tripod is paired with a Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II. When weight isn't an issue, I would much rather use the Wimberley. However, I can picture using the Acratech head on my tripod when I am trying to keep size and weight down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good substitute for gimbal head For the past 2 years I have been using my Wimberley Gimbal Head 200 for my Nikkor 400mm f/2.8 lens. I purchased the Arcratech Long Lens Head and used it this past week for about 5 hours of photographing. It works adequately. It has a little bit of dowward shift due to a pinch of looseness, but not terrible. Occassionally the 10 lb 400mm will cause the head to dip when your changing bodies/teleconverters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! I bought this head to replace my gimball head to use with my 500/4is and 7d. I didn't like the gimball because it was so awkward and cumbsome for my uses. I am a monopod shooter and I chase little birds in the bush. Love the smooth action and it has helped my photography greatly since I actually bring it with me. I hated the gimball for it sheer size/weight,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Coolest head ever! Awesome construction. Very smooth and trouble free. Can handle really long heavy lenses. Great for backpacking when weight is critical.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than a gimbal head I use this head for my 400/2.8 lens. I also use it as a general tripod head. It is both light weight and small but works just as well as my large and heavy gimbal head for my big lens arrangement and perfectly for all my other needs. Excellent in both quality and design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than Anticipated It is not as stable as a gimble but much more so than I expected. Very light. Easy to throw over your shoulder with a long lens and not have any sharp edges digging in. Only warning I can think of is if you have the lens balanced on top, don't forget to tighten the tilt knob before walking away. If you don't and it's knocked, the lens or camera will swing sharply down and hit the tripod. A great travelling head!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nuce! As compared to a ballhead with or without a leveling base (Markinks Q3T) I like the Long Lens Head with the Arcatech leveling base because, well, it's level. Set up the tripod. Adjust the leveling base. Swivel & tilt the head without any concern that the horizon is level. The friction adjustment is somewhat course, but adequate (100-400 down to wide angle lenses). I have found that for landscape work, it is far superior for me to a ballhead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect! I wanted this mostly to use with my 100-400, however it holds my 500 rock steady, too. It's lightweight, and will be a great alternative to carrying my Wimberly head around. It is just what I was after. Wish it had come with a cover.
