Are these disks the HTL variety??
Yes, I believe these discs are the HTL variety - I've used quite a few of them for burning and had no issues with them. I've never tried the LTH (the cheaper ones) before.

What was brand name of internal BD-R did you used without problem?
I have since then upgraded to the Pioneer BDR-2209, but I had a Pioneer BDR-208M at that time. I never had any issues with the latter drive, I just bought the newer model for the extra features.

What's the best external burner for these? I have the LG BH16NS40 Internal Blu-ray Writer and have experienced nothing but problems.
I have a LiteOn iHBS112 and did not waste one of them. I have been using them for more than 10 years now. Best brand for burning.
