I like it, but it is cheap. Doesn't clamp down on cold-shoe mounted accessories, but holds a Canon EX flash quite well. I have other types that I use more frequently.

The Vello Universal Accessory Shoe Mount With 1/4" Screw and Knob has a RED shoe mount tightening knob for locking shoe mounted gear tightly in the mount. It also includes a 1/4 20 locking screw with a knob ( Black) that makes it more easy to tighten with your hands. Also, if you add the following Revo adapter you will be able to use Vello shoe mount with the 12" cold shoe extension. Revo Hot Shoe to 1/4"-20 Male Post Adapter BH #RESACS14M

No. It allows you to mount accessories that fit in the flash shoe. I use it to hold the Nikon GPS sensor when also using a flash.

How do I find out the size of the thread on my tripod head to determine which shoe mount to get?

You can measure with an inch ruler across the end of the bolt. For tripods there are really only 2 sizes: 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch. Mic stands have a 5/8 inch thread.
