Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL Overview

  • 1Description

This versatile Pentax 35mm DA L f/2.4 AL Lens is considered a standard, normal focal length lens for the Pentax DSLRs it was designed for, but it's a great lens to own, even if you only have one lens. This 35mm lens (equivalent to 52.5mm in 35mm format) is ideal for family photos, portraits, landscapes and a lot more. The fast f/2.4 maximum aperture helps you get pictures even in low-light situations, and it provides high-resolution images with edge-to-edge sharpness. An aspherical lens element helps to compensate for spherical aberration to maximize image quality, and PENTAX Super Protect (SP) coating helps repel dust, water, and grease--making the lens easier to clean.

Fast f/2.4 maximum aperture for handheld photography in low lighting, and depth of field flexibility
Lightweight design for improved comfort and portability

Pentax DA 35mm f/2.4 AL Reviews

    35mm DA L f/2.4 AL Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 87.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good full-frame lens This is another low-cost Pentax DA lens that I tested extensively on a rented full-frame K-1, with a rented excellent Sigma 35/1.4 ART as the comparison lens. The Sigma did very well, of course, but careful review of the same shots taken with the Pentax 35/2.4 showed that the Pentax lens produced images that met expectations for the 36MP sensor and were nearly as good as those made with the Sigma. Although construction quality is merely adequate, this inexpensive lens performed nearly on par with the Sigma 35/1.4 overall and is a much better value. For the moment, at least, I'll stick with my known-good copy of the Pentax 35/2.4 on a K-1.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Light weight Fast Prime Great extremely light weight fast prime. I have had this about 6 months and it is so light weight it always travels in my bag usually wiht just one other larger lens. Great portraits and up close shots, also handy walk around lens. Gets great Bokeh especially up fairly close and I have great shots from accros a room at an event. When shooting an indoor event in tight space this lens is great and it has pretty good clarity towards infinity so you can shoot something in the distance (I have shot scenery like the World Trade Center from a hilltop in Jersey City) and the object in the distance comes out as clear as on some zoom lenses

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens Before I buy, I research. After reading what seemed like a couple hundred reviews, I weighed the positives with the negatives. The positives won out. So I decided to make the purchase because the price was right. I figured that if the lens produced mediocre results on my K5, I would later invest in the more expensive 35mm. Well, I was quite impressed with the clarity and sharpness of the photos. I showed a few photos to friends and they were blown away. I haven't used the lens for portraits yet but I plan to. If you need a fixed lens that produces great photos, this lens will do the job. This lens, for the price and the ease of use, is one of the best in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens for the price I have other expensive 35mm prime, but this one with that price triggered my interest. I have the Pentax bodies K110D, K01, K50 and K3II. With my K3II the lens is sharp (even at full aperture), I have not noticed any significant chromatic aberrations. The lens maintains the correct geometry (insignificant distortion at the edges). What I like is that is very light and small. The autofocus is the 'screw' type but is fast and accurate. The entire lens is plastic but is high quality and fills robust. Its is worth the money and gives good quality pictures. Could be used as a 'standard' lens with the APS-C sensor. Recommended for street photography, for portraits rather use a 50mm for landscape use a 15mm to 21mm (all with APS-C sensor size)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Deseptively amazing and cheap lens I read all the reviews before purchasing this lens. I wanted a 35mm lens but honestly didn't want to spend a lot of money since this was really going to be a walk around lens for those times I just needed to snap a couple of pictures. I must say once I opened it up I still had my doubts, and started to use it and I must say it is a great addition to my collection of lenses. The focus ring is easy to use. Which is great since the auto focus can be sluggish, and indoors I've found it hunting. Make no doubt that this is a budget lens. The lack of a lens hood, the loud motor, and the plastic feel are all things I could do without, but the images it helps you produce are sharp, bokehlicious, and very easy to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Value beyond Price It's rare to find values like this lens these days. I spent hours researching which prime lenses I would order along with my K-5iis and K-50. After reading many reviews, I came across the DxO Mark ratings for best lenses for the K-5iis. The DA 50mm 1.8 is in the top 3. The 35mm DA L F2.4 is right up there too. Sold! Yes, they are noisy, and they have a plastic mounting ring, but they feel well made for what they are. The quality of the images they produce, are far and beyond the realm that their price conveys.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's not cheap enough I just purchased a K-5. My main purpose for buying it was for low-light portraits and candids, and for my kids' indoor school stage shots. I don't like to use a flash if I can help it. The 35mm lens was going to be for indoor group shots and walk-about. Buying a single focal length lens VS a zoom, I expected little or no distortion, no matter the price. It has a slow, loud, screw focus. It is bright and clear enough for the price, but I would rather buy a zoom with more focal length, or a better 35mm. I have the 55 1.4 on order. If that doesn't take care of walk-about and group shots I'll buy the 35 2.4 limited (when I can afford).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this lens I purchased this lens for my K-x because I wanted a lens with a bigger aperture range than the 18-55mm kit lens. It feels much lighter than the kit lens. I also like how the lens can be manually focused even when the camera is set to AF. It's worth mentioning that the lens mount is plastic, if that sort of thing bothers you. I haven't had any reason to wish for a metal mount, although pros may want something with a more substantial feel. Also, the lens cap is very cheap, even an inexpensive replacement is much better. Overall, I am very pleased with this lens.

    question

Should I use a lens hood with this lens?
    Asked by: David S.
Keeping flare or ghosting light away from a lens's front element is always a good idea. Here is an affordable shade. Sensei PRO 49mm Aluminum Lens Hood B&H # SELHM49.

Will this fit my k-3 and work normally? I noticed it doesn't seem to have the A aperture ring. I know with older lens for Pentax that don't have that feature the camera won't fire. Thanks,Aaron

    question

Can this lens (and other DA lenses) be used on the new K-1 without any issues like vignetting?
    Asked by: Alan C.
Per K-1's specifications: When a DA?-, DA Limited- or DA-series lens is mounted on the K-1, its Crop mode automatically switches an image area to the APS-C size covering the middle section of the image field, while displaying the cropping frame in the viewfinder. It not only assures high-resolution images with approximately 15.36 effective megapixels, but also provides an efficient AF sensor coverage of the image area for more flexible image composition during autofocus operation. When you select the FF (Full Frame) setting of the Crop mode, you can even capture a 35mm full-frame image with a DA-series lens (with certain lenses and/or under certain photographic conditions, a captured image may suffer a drastic drop in brightness and/or resolution in the areas outside the APS-C image area. This setting does not provide compensation of various lens aberrations).
