  • 1Description

The DTR550 Digital On-Site Portable 2-Way Radio from Motorola is a digital on-site portable 2-way radio that offers high-quality communication and versatile features in a compact and rugged design. The radio operates on the 900 MHz license-free band and offers group calling with access to up to 20 public groups and 150 private contacts. It also provides digital 1-to-1 and 1-to-many calling, so that other DTR radios on the same group ID and channel can communicate.

The radio has a full graphic backlit display with contrast adjustment and a backlight timer. The screen will display SMS text message information, including reception and origination info, plus a time/date stamp. A caller ID function stores information about your last 20 transmissions. The radio also supports unit-to-unit configuration for simplified cloning operation with an optional cable.

The DTR550 operates for up to 14.5 hours via the included rechargeable Li-ion battery. This allows you to communicate without worry, even on extra-long work days. The radio has a rugged polycarbonate housing with a comfortable and durable rubber overmold. It meets MIL-STD 810C, 810D, 810E, and 810F specifications for shock, vibration, water, dust, and temperature extremes.

    Motorola DTR-550 reviews

    DTR550 Digital On-Site Portable 2-Way Radio is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Amazing Radios They range of these radios is amazing...in the city, tall buildings, open terrain, in the forest and between cars! Range: City: 3 to 3.5km Buildings: They work over 86 floors!!! I have tested them in the Empire State Building! The structure is very impressive! They would work in every big mall, hotel and school! Open terrain: 4 to 5km In the wilderness and forest: 3 to 4km Between 2 cars: 2.5km to 3km In every condition they shine! Rain, extreme humidity, sand, dirt have no effect on the DTR radios. They audio is very loud and clear when their is high noise or no noise at all! I know what the worst conditions are for the radios, they have been their also! Before them I owned 3 Motorola HT1000 UHF 4Watts public safety radios they were getting to old, they batteries didn't last more than 5 to 6 hours. They range was not very good...static was a big problem! In some places I was on the same frequency as the security or maintenance... Now with my 3 DTR two-way radios have no problem and the ended costing less that other professional equipment. The last thing is the battery it last up to 16 hours, and we talk a lot!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent performer in a surprisingly small package I bought six of these in the hopes of a solution that would cover events over a few acres or in a large metal building. These easily exceed those requirements. When they arrived I was surprised to discover that they are smaller and lighter weight than I had imagined. Build quality is excellent--sturdy and professional feeling. I just did the first range test today. The radios covered a distance of about 8/10 of a mile with one inside a house and the other outside, but with multiple residential subdivisions and a chunk of forest preserve in between--so not even close to a line of sight scenario. Audio quality is 100% perfect until range is exceeded. Audio is better than a typical digital cell phone call quality, and the volume and clarity of the speaker is excellent. The negatives are all tolerable. There is a half second delay on all transmissions. If two users are in close proximity when one transmits, it creates a disorienting echo. The user interface is a decade old and not a big deal for many users and uses. The radios **DO** work right out of the box with zero setup. But one of the useful features of digital is being able to call an individual radio or see who is talking. Assigning custom alphanumeric names (as opposed to long serial number looking IDs) requires either Motorola software on a compatible older version of Windows using a serial port adapter cable (which itself requires a USB to serial adapter on any modern computer), OR a proprietary mini-keyboard. I just ordered the latter from a different vendor, figuring that will always work, but software designed for years-old computers and ports may not be workable into the future. I don't have it yet, but the two uses will be custom names and pre-printed text messages. These are expensive, but they occupy a unique space at the intersection of pro quality, long range (that is compatible with urban and high-rise environments), highly secure, perfect audio clarity, and license free.
