Vello EW-78E overview

  • 1Description

The dedicated Vello EW-78E Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with Canon's EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. It is primarily used to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of it. A dedicated hood is crafted to perfectly suit the specific focal length of the lens it is designed for. Additionally, this hood features a non-glare matte finish on the interior surface to further prevent or limit lens flare. Also, since the end of the lens is extended, you get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. The bayonet mount is designed to also work in the reversed position, allowing the hood to be placed backwards over the lens for a more compact storage solution.

Designed to accommodate the exact angle of view of the camera's lens
Minimizes flare and ghosting by blocking out stray light
Protects your lens from accidental impact and the elements

    Vello EW-78E reviews

EW-78E Dedicated Lens Hood is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 50.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect fit, but not without comprimises I bought the Pearstone version of this lens hood for my Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens primarily because of the price tag, about half of what the Canon version costs. I was impressed with the construction and solid feel of the lens hood when compared to the Canon lens hoods I own. There is no felt on the inside of the lens hood, but it does have a dappled, matte finish to the plastic material. The lens hood fits very well on the lens and uses the same bayonet style mount as the Canon versions. I have not had any success reversing the hood onto the lens for when I am storing the lens, but then again, it is not advertised that it fits that way.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Almost a great product Here is my personal experience with this hood. When used in the forward direction, this is a great hood. Fits like a glove, nice smooth movement, everything I would expect from the original Canon. When use in the reverse (storage) direction, well now we have a problem. Before the hood properly engages, it gets stuck. If you look carefully at the hood you will see that the walls that engage the camera's ring when used in the reverse direction are just a little bit thicker than the walls that engage the camera's ring when used in the forward direction. This additional thickness makes the hood practically impossible to mount in reverse. For my hood, instead of a nice 90 degree movement and a click into place I could go about 10 degrees and then be jammed/stuck. Since it was an inexpensive part and I figured that I didn't have a whole lot to loose I used a dremmel with a fine sanding bit to sand down this wall making it thinner. Now I can put the hood on in the forward direction (no change in feel at all) but also in the reverse direction without the getting stuck part. I would not describe the hood as having flimsy construction, just a wrong dimension on good construction. Would I recommend it to a friend? Only with full disclosure as I have done here and only if my friend could re-produce my modification making it a worth while hood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value I recently bought a Canon EOS EF-S 15-85mm lens and it came without a hood. Prior to this I had purchased Vello's tripod ring for my 70-200mm lens. I bought that because it was substantially less in price than was Canon's ring. So, I noticed Vello made a lens hood for my lens, and, it too was substantially less money than was Canon's hood. I was happy with the Vello ring quality and am happy with the quality and fit of this hood for my 15-85mm. It also mounts backwards so I can remove it, mount it backward, when I do not need to use it. Handy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No need to buy Canon's I purchased the B&H-brand Vello hoods for 15-85 and three other Canon lenses. Another NY store also has their own house-brand; many have complained on their site about the quality, and even the model-stamp often looks lousy. Not so with these - they are just as durable as Canon's and are even lined with the velvet coat inside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This IS the one Excellent fit and finish. Goes on smoothly with a positive click into place. Can be reversed for storage. Why would any one pay more for the Canon name? Functions as it should, reducing flare and glare, adds protection and looks awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works very well and fairly priced I was anticipating that this hood would not be the same quality as the one provided by Canon. It is very rigid and attaches smoothly and securely to the 15-85 EF-S Canon lens. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does What It Needs It's a lens hood and it does what it is designed to do. It helps control flare, protects the lens, and is reversible for storage. I now own L lenses with the Canon-provided lens hoods, so this one has since been retired. However, this functions just the same as theirs at a lower cost for lenses where Canon does not provide their own. If you don't already have one, I would recommend getting a hood! They're relatively inexpensive and worth the protection they provide!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I love this lens! I use this lens for everyday use ranging from landscapes to portraits. Lens is great for everyday just walking around. You have a fair amount of zoom and a really wide angle to you can fit a lot into the field of view. I replaced 3 lenses with this one lens. Regarding construction. The lens fells very well made. No wobble and the zoom and focus are smooth as silk. Auto Focus is super fast and dead on. Glass is really clear.
