Dynalite RP1600 overview

  • 1Description

This Dynalite RP1600 1600W/s Road Power Pack is powerful and versatile enough to handle a wide variety of on-the-run assignments like fashion, corporate work, portraiture, weddings and interiors. The pack has 3 head outlets and breaks down its output symmetrically or asymmetrically over a 6 stop range with short flash durations at a super fast 2.2 seconds recycling time at full power. A variator knob allows fine tuned exposure adjustments over 2 stops in 2/10 stop increments. Triggering options include sync cord (provided), IR or optical slave. The RP1600 is compatible with most optional radio remote systems such as PocketWizard.

Although you may be tired at the end of a long shooting day, it won't be because of your equipment. The RP1600 pack weighs 7.2 lb (3.26 kg) and measures 5.9 x 6.9 x 8" (14.9 x 17.5 x 20.3 cm). That's a lot of power in a small package.

Power Control Switch
Two full / half / quarter power switches to provide seven basic power settings. Arc proof.
Combined / Ratio Output Switch

    Dynalite RP1600 reviews

RP1600 1600W/s Road Power Pack is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from 5 stars...or maybe 1. We'll see. I've been using Dynalites my entire professional career and have some units that are over 20 years old. They're small, lightweight, simple to use, powerful, consume little enough power that they can be easily used on location and are- in my opinion- the best value for the money. In fact, when I first started purchasing Dynalites, they cost approximately $1 per watt (about $1,000 for a 1000 watt pack, etc.). Now, a 1600 watt pack- without the Pocket Wizard slave- is a better value than 20 years ago! I love and will continue to use my 'classic' Dynalites BUT... I've started to replace some older units for the very fast shooting I do. I bought a new 1600 RoadMax pack and head. The head didn't work straight out of the box- it fired only intermittently. The pack lasted 'almost' 2 jobs and then pretty much blew up. I'll admit I was shooting rapidly but the pack was set to 1/2 power minus 2 clicks on the variator, the power equally drawn from each channel. That shouldn't be a problem with a brand new pack. These issues caused added expenses on 2 different jobs since I had to rent equipment to substitute for these non-working items, and I don't feel I can rely on new Dynalite units as I did in the past. I'm waiting for a replacement and have given 4 stars (instead of the 5 I'd normally have given) in the hope that my recent experiences were flukes but, if I have further problems, I'll feel justified downgrading my rating to the lowest possible one. In the meantime, I'm still a fan, but just a little wary.
