Bolt VM-160 overview

  • 1Description

Capture extreme close-ups or portraits with the VM-160 LED Macro Ring Light from Bolt, which features eighteen high-output LEDs with a guide number of 21' / 6.4m at ISO 100. The light features six levels of brightness adjustment from -1.5 EV to +1.5 EV and the continuous light source helps you easily see the effects of the lighting as well as enable use during video. Four clip-on diffusers are included to further adjust the quality of light from the ring light: clear, frosted, amber, and blue. Users can set the light to illuminate from only the left or right side for added dimensionality when shooting. Additionally, to help conserve battery power, the light can be set to work in flash mode, which will turn on the light for approximately a half second each time the shutter is released.

The power unit features a 1.6" backlit LCD monitor for displaying battery power and ring light settings. It attaches to your camera via an accessory shoe and requires 4 AA batteries. A stand is also included to hold the power unit on its own, or on a light stand or tripod via the integrated 1/4"-20 thread. For mounting the ring light to your lens, eight different adapter rings are included to fit a range of lens diameters: 49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, and 77mm.

Note: Controller unit uses a universal type hot shoe, and is not compatible with cameras that use the older Sony/Minolta shoe.
Not compatible with Fuji X-T2 and X-Pro 2.

LED ring light is universal in design and independent of any specific TTL system. It is compatible with most DSLR lenses and ideal for macro and close-up shooting applications.
18 high-output LED array provides a guide number of 21' / 6.4m at ISO 100.
Four light modes available:
Light Mode will keep the light on continuously.
Flash Mode will activate the light for approximately one half second at a time when the shutter is depressed; this will help conserve battery power.
Left and Right Flash Modes will set only the left or right half of the light to turn on in order to give more dimensionality to your subject matter.
An automatic power-saving function will turn off the ring light after 30 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery power.
1.6" backlit LCD provides visual display of battery life and light settings.
Four clip-on diffusers are included: clear, frosted, amber, and blue.
49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, and 77mm adapter rings are included.
Coiled power cord connects the ring light to power unit and measures 10" relaxed and 30" stretched.
Stand/tripod mount features a 1/4"-20 thread on base.

    Bolt VM-160 reviews

VM-160 LED Macro Ring Light is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 153.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Awesome - What you need to know. The LED Macro Ring Light is perfect for a learning opportunity since the light features not only an excellent flash, but continuous light where needed. As a student heading off to become a film major this next year, this allows me to really play with lighting and great photography ahead of time. The only downside is that the light ends up being too bright if you don't adjust the camera to it first, but that's true when setting up anything. Overall, it's great quality, will go on a Canon easily since it comes with every ring adapter, the diffuse options go a long way, and this will make your pictures look great! Be prepared to have batteries ready, though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a ringer After a quick unboxing, I tested out my new Bolt ring light. I was suprised at how well it performed through a series of experimental shots. No TTL means that you will learn a lot about manual mode and adjustments.....FUN!!! I was concerned that the VM-110 might be weak, so I went with the VM-160. No disappointment! I am looking forward to some portraiting and macro shooting with this neat ring light. Yes, it isn't built like an armored car, but it will be just fine for anyone that takes care of their gear. I trusted B&H and it's legion of reviewers, and once again they were right. Tip: The black plastic mounting rings come with the sizes engraved and are hard to read. A quick wipe with some white enamel paint solved that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poor Battery Performance I wanted to like this ring flash, and when I opened the box I was quite enthused about it. Seems like decent build quality and lots of useful accessories, all for the right price. But a few minutes of testing with both flash and LED lights caused the battery icon to show that the power was already draining. Other than that it worked as it should and I have no complaints about the other facets of its function. The shadow isn't as strong as it would be on a serious ring flash, but those cost a lot more. I give it three stars for build quality and accessories, but it doesn't have the staying power to be able to use it for long periods. I ended up returning this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good LED Light but not real Flash I'm glad I read other reviews here before purchasing this LED ring light. I almost fell for the cheaper brand name light. This light has fewer LEDs but they are high power and produce adequate light for using 200 ASA. This has a Light on mode and a flash mode. The flash mode just turns on the light for 1/2 second. There is no flashing about this. For digital cameras you can use the white balance to neutralize the light color....what ever it is. If you are shooting film buy a real xenon flash and not an LED light. Overall this is really well made and I am glad I bought it. I'm using it with a D750 mostly and as a light it works fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful and great price This is quite helpful in macro photography where a constant light source is needed or a dim flash is needed and you want more light working closely without shadow. It's not very bright (and that's why I really wouldn't get the other version that is dimmer). But it does use LEDs. if you are looking for something brighter, probably need a regular flash. I'm using this on an A7R2 and in silent shutter mode, you can't use the flash mode on the ring light. It uses batteries fairly quickly (I would recommend rechargeable as regular batteries are pretty inefficient - environmentally relatively destructive and these would chew them up fast).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I luv this thing Pros: For the price first of all, you can't beat it. This Bolt VM-160 LED Macro Ring Light is easy to underestimate. I did not expect it to be as bright as it is, and the convenient adapters that it comes with cove most of my lens. The Macro Ring Light gave me the look I was looking for in both my stills and in some videos. Given it is so easy to transition form using it as a flash to a ring light made it better. Cons: For taking photos the weight of the bottom of the light causes the camera to move from the focus points you set, so when using it I have to make sure to keep holding the focus ring to balance the weight. And using auto-focus (I almost never use) is impossible. It fight s with the auto. I do think that the ring light itself should have the ability to be mounted besides on the front of the camera. But all-in-all, given the fact that I would mount the light on a nearby stand at times, I don't regret buying it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Plastic filter adapter Everything about this ring light is good except the cheapo plastic threaded filter adapters which mount the light to the lens. Why not include a decent metal adapter with real threads??? This plastic thing will easily distort, cross thread, and pop off unexpectedly. I knocked off 2 stars because the one flimsey component ruins the the quality of all the rest, which is well made.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Better than nothing This light is more for video than for photography. It lacks the power of a true ring flash to really allow you to show with a low ISO or faster shutter. While the price is attractive I don't think it is worth the price unless you are using it for video. Even then it is better suited as a supplement for other or existing light than used alone in low light situations macro or otherwise. The fall off from this light is rather quick so macro work is its only real use. If you are using it for video know that the strength of the light falls off very quickly. I would use rechargeable batteries if possible otherwise you will go through tons of batteries. You can probably only get 30 minutes or so at near full strength before the light power really falls off as you see in the pictures below. This is more of an enthusiast item than a budget pro option. Something I will play with, but won't be taking on my pro shoots. Will happily use it just for fun though. Would take another star off if you have more of a pro mindset.
