Nice design and easy to get on and off. Installs in seconds and folds flat for easy storage. The gels are great for getting the color you need in a shot.

Great tool to have in your camera bag

A great addition to anyone's camera bag. I did a color wheel experiment under fluorescent light with a set camera on a tripod and ran through all the gels, no gel, no softbox and bounced between the AWB and the Fluorescent setting. The results were impressive (and fun to do.) Although it is not a great softbox alone (hence, the 4 stars,)it is a great tool to compensate for various light conditions. Camera was a Canon Rebel T3i with a Speedlite 430X II flash. The fact that this item folds down flat to about 1/4 thick makes it a no brainer addition to my bag. The price is a bonus.

Plastic

The entire inner surface of this softbox is glossy plastic with the outer frosted plastic with an inner glossy surface and reflects much of the light back into it rather than diffusing it. Don't have a flashmeter or would give some numbers. Cut out the plastic holder for the gels and performance was a bit better. May be able to use it for tight places. If it doesn't say fabric...

Soft, direct light

I use this Small Vello Softbox on a Canon 600EX-RT with a 5D mkII. I use this softbox/flash combo in two ways: atop the camera, and next to the camera on a Vello CB-600 Straight Flash Bracket. I use it mainly when I need to point the flash directly at the subject, not bouncing the flash off a ceiling or wall. Along with the Softbox, I also use the flip-up diffuser built into the flash. This set-up gives me soft, yet direct light for outside, in a room where the ceiling is black or too high for bounce, or in a room where I do not want the bounce to hit colored walls and affect my color balance. It gives beautiful, direct light for both horizontal and vertical photos. PROS: It weighs nothing. Looks professional. Costs very little. CONS: Very awkward to mount to the flash. I do not use the velcro: I use an elastic band. I'll probably order the band that Vello sells next time I order something from B&H. I believe their solution might be better than mine, and I wish they would include the band in the Softbox package. All in all, I really like this Softbox, and I'm glad I bought it.

Was exactly what I was looking for and at a good price. One of my favorite things about B&H is the free expedited shipping. Instead of waiting up to 10 days for my orders, the majority of mine come the next day.

question

Does this require strips of velcro to be glued to the Speedlight? Will it stay in place with a Cinch Strap? Thank You. Joe
Asked by: Joseph
I comes with Velcro strips, you can hole it on with an elastic strap or a rubber-band although the later takes a bit of work to hold in place. .
