B+W 49mm MRC 103M ND 0.9 Filter (3-Stop)
Key Features
  • 8x Filter Factor, 3-Stop
  • Darkens Entire Image
  • Allows Reduced Shutter Speed
  • Allows Wider Aperture
The B+W 49mm MRC 103M ND 0.9 Filter is a neutral density filter with a 8x filter factor that provides a 3-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing the aperture or slowing your exposure time, you can control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes eight layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity. This filter features an F-Pro brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

question

Does a 3 stop filter always require a tripod?
Asked by: Connie T.
Not at all! In fact, a typical use of this filter is handheld: In bright light, the base ISO (sensitivity) of most digital cameras is too high to allow wide apertures to be used (e.g. for shallow depth-of-field)--the required shutter speed exceeds the camera's capability. A 3-stop ND filter is perfect for this situation. If you're looking for an ND filter that allows you to use very long exposures in daylight (e.g. to make moving objects disappear , a 10-stop ND is a good starting point. You'd definitely want a tripod for that.
