The Retro Pack Bundle v5 from McDSP contains 3 native based plug-ins designed to impart a "vintage" character on any audio source. It consists of an EQ, compressor and a limiter that are only available via this bundle. All 3 plug-ins use an output stage topology designed by the company to eliminate digital clipping at any output level and produce a smoother distortion characteristic. This feature is in addition to the analog saturation modeling.
The 4020 Retro EQ is a 4-band EQ and filter set. The high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) bands are shelving EQ, with two additional high-mid and low-mid frequency parametric EQ bands. All EQ bands operate on a gain dependent variable Q system for a vintage smooth sound. The HF and LF filters use a split-octave design that provides a 12dB/octave slope near the selected frequency, with a maximum slope of 24dB/octave.
The 4030 Retro Compressor features a dynamic range control topology coupled with a wet/dry mix control to balance compressed and uncompressed signals. An active attack and release design allows aggressive compression settings with minimal artifact generation. The 4040 Retro Limiter combines a look-ahead brick wall limiter function with several subjective treatments to make the limiting action subtle yet vintage.
Version 5 of the plug-ins include an Audio Units version for use with DAWs that support the format, including Logic, Digital Performer (DP) and Ableton Live. Additionally, a third party software application that supports the TDM, RTAS, or AudioSuite plug-in standard can also be used.
