Voigtlander DA407B Reviews

Voigtlander 15mm metal viewfinder

I was very hesitant to purchase this viewfinder due to what I view as its exorbitant cost. Over $200 for a viewfinder seems somewhat outrageous to me. Nonetheless, I have to say that this viewfinder is a huge improvement over the cheap plastic viewfinders that come with the Voigtlander 15mm lens. The plastic viewfinder distorts noticeably, giving a fish eye effect to everything within frame and doesn't show everything that the lens actually sees. The expensive metal viewfinder addresses both these issues as well as durability. The foot of my plastic viewfinder was starting to break and I don't know how much longer it would even be usable. The new one has a metal foot and body. The only drawback I can see to the new finder is that if you're a glasses wearer, the metal can scratch them. This was easily resolved with a ring of gaffer tape, but it's not something I should have to do on an item this pricey. I do recommend this though over the original plastic model, the new viewfinder is smaller, brighter, has accurate frame lines and seems much more durable. Only 4 starts because of the cost.

I use this with my Voigtlander 15mm lens on a Leica film camera and a Leica digital camera. It is an essential tool if you want to see what you are taking pictures of with this equipment. The viewfinder itself is very well built, made of brass with a black finish. It looks good. It presents a very clear frame that is easy to see for those of us who wear glasses. Just be careful not to loose it. I was using the 28mm version of this when It came out of the hot shoe. After retracing my steps for several blocks I found it on the pavement, somewhat scraped, but otherwise fine. (now it looks like I've been in a war or two!)
