Vello LHS-77II overview

  • 1Description

The Vello 77mm Snap-on Tulip Lens Hood (Version II) is designed to fit lenses with a 77mm filter thread. The hood is designed for use with internal focus type zoom lenses. When used with "full frame" sensor cameras, the starting focal length should be above 20mm. With "APS-C" sensor cameras, the starting focal length should be above 15mm. With wider lenses, especially on full frame cameras, some slight vignetting might occur.

The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage with the minimum amount of weight and hood area. In addition, the design of this hood allows it to be reversed and stored on the lens, when not in use. It is also designed to accept lens caps.

Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens, by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

    Vello LHS-77II reviews

77mm Snap-on Tulip Lens Hood (Version II) is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok, but could be longer I use it with a Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G2 Telephoto Zoom Lens because I've lost the original hood (it loses easily btw). The velbo snap-on holds finely at the polarizer, allowing the circle-movement to adjust it. It's very light and doesn't interfere in weight. I think it could be a little longer for a telephoto lens, but anyway it's better than a metal hood, for it doesn't reflect from inside. So, for the price, it's ok (an original one, in my case, is the hardest thing to get and can cost over 200 dollars; there's the chance of it getting lost in mail). I hope Vello releases some other model, a little longer than this one, soon. As it is, it should work nice (nicer) with wide-angle lens.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lens cap is difficult to attach. This was offered as a bundle with a lens I purchased, so I wrongly assumed the lens didn't come with a hood. I used this hood at first - but it was both difficult to attach to the lens and the lens' cap was VERY difficult to attach with the hood in place. I afterwards realized there was a hood in the box which was designed for that lens, which offered more protection from extraneous light, was easier to attach and the lens cap attaches without difficulty. I cannot recommend this lens hood.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not a Wise Choice Purchased this to use with my Sigma 10-20 as I have lost 2 in interesting parts of the world. Decided to save money with this one but I'll pay more for a Sigma next time. Most disappointing is that it is not as compact in my bag as the Sigma. The shade doesn't tuck away as well around the body of the lens when not in use. Both space and weight are vital with travel photography. It is; however, a bit of a beefier feel which may be a bit more durable in the long haul. Time will tell.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Completely useless for Sony Sal_2470 Just unpacked this and attached it to my Sony SAL 24-70F2.8 (Sony Alpha A99). I bought this after a chat with B&H, which recommended this as a replacement for my lost lens hood.Problem 1: For protecting the lens, I have a UV filter permanently on my lens. When I attach the lens hood, there is a HUGE vignetting on both sides when zoomed to 24mm. Terrible!Problem 2: When turning it around for storage, it is not possible to attach the sony lens cover.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Well made, but causes vignetting at 24mm I bought this as an alternative to the Nikon HB-63 for my 24-85mm Nikon lens on FX, so that I could have a 72-77mm adapter ring attached to the lens. It's not wide enough - vignettes at the corners at 24mm wide. I don't think this is because of the adaptor - presumably it should also work with a UV filter, which would cause a similar offset. For the price, I'm going to try cutting the corners back a little, but it's not optimal.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Compromise Solution This lens hood was provided as an option to a used lens that did not have the original, Prior to getting the Vello hood I purchased an original Fuji hood. The Vello clips onto the filter threads either on the lens or any filter you may have mounted on it. One issue is it will not mount in reverse for storage. Clearly the OE hood is preferable but this one would work in a pinch. It's also much cheaper than the Fuji hood.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Secure but With Compromises Snaps securely into the filter ring grooves, but if the filter is a polarizer, the hood will turn with the polarizer. When you store it on the lens, in other words, reversing it, the lens cap leaves a large gap around its edge with the hood and so dust can easily enter. These are bad compromises for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Alright Lens Hood I was looking for the OEM fit for my Tokina 11-16 f2.8 but the next best(I use that loosely) thing was the Vello Hood. It fits but it leaves a gap. It can easily pop off if you bump the lens. The factory lens cover doesn't fit unless you use the guide lines on the inner part of the hood to clip it in.
