Formatt Hitech BF S9-ND2.4HD Overview

The Series 9 HD ND 2.4 Filter from Formatt Hitech has been developed to meet the needs of today's modern ultra-sharp HD (High Definition) cameras and lenses. This is an optically pure ND filter - more than a standard Formatt ND filter. It enables the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting potential color shift problems that may occur in low light.

A neutral density filter appears gray and reduces the amount of light reaching the digital sensor or film plane. Neutral Density filters are also used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Determining which grade of neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters.

Formatt's Neutral Density Filters are a response to the many DPs and cinematographers who find that it is important to shoot as wide open as possible to minimize depth of field - especially with HD
In response to the professional demand for an optically correct and pristine neutral density filter for HD, Formatt designed its HD Neutral Density Filters, which are the ultimate solution to enhance color contrast and are ideal for normal light reduction
Available in all the popular round screw-in sizes and all the standard square sizes
All Formatt filters are finished with a unique edge frame offering maximum protection against chipping, surface scratches and enables easy handling and cleaning
With the filter description on top of the frame it also makes identification of the filter much easier especially when filters are stored in cases on location
Formatt HD Neutral Density filters have the same densities and light stops as the Kodak Wratten Standards
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Absorbing Cell Technology
The secret to Formatt's consistency in filter design lies in its unique "Absorbing Cell Technology" (A.C.T.); this unique process allows color correct dyes to be applied to optically pure, wafer thin absorbing cells and offers a controllability that ensures the smoothest grad lines and consistent color across the whole filter surface
Each filter is guaranteed flatness to a maximum 2-wave value and comes with an individual reading from a laser interferometer; every filter is carefully verified with a densitometer and spectrophotometer to ensure consistent and accurate transmission, before leaving the factory - the result is an absolute purity of image that eliminates any unwanted color cast caused by conventional greenish soda-lime glass
