Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Value, Outstanding Machine The Logan Simplex Elite Model 750-1 mat cutter is an upgrade and improvement to the Simplex Plus Model 750. It is easy to set up and accurate in operation. However, the instructions, as complete as they are, do NOT tell you that the squaring arm must be adjusted properly in order to ensure a square cut. There are two screws in the channel of the base which the arm slides under and another screw on the opposite side of the channel which applies pressure on the arm to keep it in position. Unless you back the keeper screws out enough to cause a slight force fit of the squaring arm into the channel, the pressure screw will allow the arm to pivot. Once I figured out that the keeper screws could be adjusted, I get perfectly square cuts every time. In all other ways, the mat cutter is ideal for those who want to mount and mat pictures for themselves. The 750-1 includes a bevel cutter for cutting mats, a straight cutter for cutting foam board, an 8-ply bevel cutter for cutting thicker mats, a glass cutter, and an acrylic cutter. Overall, an excellent mat cutter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Your next step up if you cut your own mats A great way to do more than casual matting, but not quite up there with high production models. I mat up to ten or 15 works a week and very pleased with the results. -- Remember to square the arm with a good carpenters square (each time you use it if you put it away or move it between uses). -- And, check the squareness of your mats before you start cutting, cause not all are cut properly from the manufacturer. The booklet that comes with the cutter is quite helpful. I'm glad I got it! I would certainly call this a wise investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The TOTAL mat-cutting tool I have been wanting to get into matting and framing because my husband is an exceptional wildlife photographer and I am always shocked by the cost of professional framing. I was initialy going to get a cheaper model, but my husband talked me into this one because it does EVERYTHING - in addition to regular mats, it has all the tools to cut 8-ply mats, foamboard, acrylic, paper, and even glass. So far I have only used it for mats (only had it for 4 days) but I am thoroughly excited by the possibilities. The instructions that come with it are very clear, it is easy to use, and the construction is very solid. As an extra nice touch, the framing book that comes with it gives you all sorts of other cool ideas. Looks like I may have to start making my own frames soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little reading required. My desire to learn framing, along with my passion for photography, led me to purchase this unit, and am I glad I did! While it takes a little RTFM, the overall set up, is pretty intuitive. Reading reviews from (some) others, made me a little apprehensive about the build quality and durability, but I can tell you, the nit pickers out there are WRONG! There are ample warnings about over tightening knobs, and if you are inclined to criticize because you don't believe what the manual says, shame on you! BUT....the 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter also comes with an instructional DVD and a how to book. Couldn't ask for moreThis model has everything you need to start cutting the materials needed for framing, i.e. mats, matboard, etc. and they even threw in a glass/acrylic cutter + a paper trimmer. Learning how to cut mats without over/under cutting, is an experience and practice, practice, practice thing. The product does what it is supposed to do, and I would HIGHLY recommend this to someone who wants to mat and frame their artwork/pictures, etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 750-1 Simplex Elite Mat Cutter I purchased this unit so I could begin to mat my own photos rather than having them done at the framing shop. This unit came highly recommended, so I thought I would give it a try. I will be using it to cut maybe 10-15 mats per month. So far it has been a breeze to use and produces great results. Being new to cutting my own mats I didnt know what to expect, but they are turning out great. So far its just been simple mats and cuts, but as I get more comfortable, I will begin to start trying more advanced cuttings. Comes with all the tools I think I will need at this point. Its well made and well packaged. I have not found anything I am not satisfied with yet. Seems to be perfect for the non-high volume user.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Trial By Fire My agency bought one for my production studio to save money on professional matting costs. I needed to cut fifty 11x17 mats for framing in one day... the same day I opened the shipping box and assembled mat board cutter. After watching the online demo video on the B&H Website and a quick review of the instruction booklet I was cutting mats to meet a deadline. Using the production stops as shown in the demo video my first production run was very easy, quite precise and pretty quick too. After finishing my goal of 50 mats, I had only made two mistakes and both were human error and not equipment failure. At the half way point in the production run I flipped the blade around to assure clean cuts and kept cutting (though blade replacement was not needed). After the first 20 mats the cutter paid for itself and it has reduced our framing costs by 50% on subsequent jobs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent, flexible tool I've used the Logan 750 to cut a variety of window mats, backings, glass, and plex. It's very easy to use, the quality is very high, and the results are great. My only complaint is that the plex cutter is a free-hand tool, so the results weren't as good. I'd prefer a tool that hooks onto the cutting rail, as all the other tools do. One other minor complaint is that the unit was slightly out of square when I got it, so I had to make some adjustments, but once done, everything was just fine.I used to work as a professional framer, and this unit is easier to use than some of the industrial models we had.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality Mat Cutter I purchased this to mat my own photographs. Custom matting was not always done properly and getting too expensive. I found the machine had a learning curve but once familiar with it, it was easy to use. I got this particular version since I could cut down full size 30x40 sheets, and it contained the cutters to do 8-ply mat, glass, acrylic, and paper, useful for special projects. When fully assembled it is a large device that requires a large stable flat area to work on. This must be considered when purchasing it. Another consideration is storage, for while the side arm can be easily removed, the device is still nearly 4 feet long. Smaller machines are available but don't handle full size board. One thing to watch out for is there are two different mat blades in the package: one is labeled 720, the other unlabeled, with no indication which of the two mat cutters they are for. After doing some research I found that #720 is for standard 4 ply, while the unlabeled is #721 for 8 ply mat board. Since they do cross-fit (probably intentionally), I think the labeling on the packaging could be better. Extra blades are a necessity for they will go dull and a dull blade does not give a quality cut. The price from B&H was the best that we found and $130 less than what a local retailer charged.
