The 40" 550-1 Simplex Classic Cutter from Logan Graphics is an all-purpose mat cutting tool, which is used by many novice and professional framers, students, artists, and photographers. Moreover, the cutting board includes a straight cutter that cuts a mat straight in half or down to a specific size, and a bevel cutting head that cuts and creates a beveled window mat for framing art or a photograph.

The Simplex Classic Cutter consist of a hinging guide rail, which holds your mat in place, and features production stops for faster repeat cutting. A parallel mat guide that slides up and down the aluminum channel determines the size of your borders in the window mat. In addition, the 32" squaring arm helps to keep your mat completely straight against the arm and guide when your're cutting a mat. Both cutting heads are compatible with the #270 blades.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does exactly what it should I needed a mat cutter that was basically foolproof, and so far this one has been. I minimally required a long bar perpendicular to the cutting channel or other mechanism to keep things square, and this is the model on which that feature first appears (price-wise). There's at least one less-expensive model with a very short squaring bar, but I tried it and was not satisfied. So, once set up properly, the thing is so easy to use, mechanically, that doing the math for the cuts is actually the hardest part. PROVIDED... one takes the time to set up the machine properly, and I can't stress how important that is. I come from a woodworking background, where learning to keep machines tuned is mantra. These mat cutters do not arrive from the factory perfectly squared (or the two I tried didn't), and so it's imperative to follow the included instructions and make them so. Then everything is a breeze. Also, mat boards never seem to be perfectly square either, so I find it best to trim those all the way around before starting a project. The lack of a fifth star is due to the slightly clumsy method for squaring the machine, which I think could be made better. But, once that's done, it's 5 stars for performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Mat Cutter! This mat cutter is so easy to use - not much different than a rotary paper cutter (the only difference being that you have tools to set the cut perfectly where you want it) - that fellow photographers complimented me on my first set of cuts (16 bevel-cut mats for my portfolio photos) and were amazed they were my first! They all said cutting mats was hard, but they must not have tried a cutter like this one because it is very simple to use. I definitely recommend this cutter, especially if you find cutting mats hard!Setting up the cutter was easy and using it was easy (I had watched the video online prior to receiving the cutter, so was familiar with how to use it). My only disappointment is that I either did not realize that for a little bit more money I could have gotten the Elite version, which comes with an 8-ply mat cutter, glass cutter, and a few other tools. Had I known that (or maybe the cutter wasn't in stock at the time), I definitely would have gotten that version instead. Now I have to pay the same price as the price difference just to get the one 8-ply cutter, which is something I will purchase in the future. So, definitely look into getting the Elite version (750 I think) unless you are certain you will never cut 8-ply mats, glass, etc.I recently purchased a pack of 100 replacement blades so I will have plenty in stock for my cutting, as it is recommended to replace the blades often, such as with each project/batch of mats. You want to make sure you are only cutting with sharp blades!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works and easy to use I read the relevant sections of the book and watched the videos on the Logan site before starting out. My very first attempt was a little off since I didn't measure properly - so, my fault - not the mat cutter. The second effort was perfect. Pay attention to the size of the cutter - it is quite large and needs a level stable surface to use it on. Since the base is wood, I will be storing it flat which also requires a lot of space (under a bed works). This is my first mat cutter and I'm glad I didn't go for the least expensive model.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It is less than average product! Pros: 1. It is very easy to use but, with limitations. 2. For single, double and/or triple mat and glass is perfect, but not for anymore. 3. The blades of the bevel cutting head can be adjusted. 4. If you are going to use this mat cutter ONLY for your own works, it is OK. Cons: 1. Prior to use, be sure everything is correctly aligned and then practice, practice practice before your first work. You have to practice to obtain the accurate results. 2. It wasn't designed for making V-groove and/or Inlay cuts. If you are trying to make a V-groove, be careful because you have to slide the bevel cutting head over the art, so you can damage it (the art is not protected). 3. The mat cutter is very delicate the base is not solid wood. 4. If you are going to use this mat cutter for sale any of your own work you framed, be careful, practice, practice, and practice prior to do that. This is not the best mat cutter for that. Overall: It is less than average mat cutter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Mat Cutter As a photographer, I got sick of paying big dollars for getting photos matted and decided to start doing it myself. This is a simple, straight-forward mat cutter for first-timers like myself. It comes with instruction manuals, a how-to-frame manual, and DVD. YouTube is also a great source for learning how to use it. This cutter is extremely well made. The base is heavy and solid and the squaring arm is long enough to square even the 32X40 mats. It makes clean, straight lines and corners and the dual production stops are very handy to have (some models only have one production stop). One thing to be aware of is that the depth of the blades are made for standard thickness mat board. If you use a thinner mat board, be sure to practice beforehand, because it over-cuts the corners. This is not a problem with standard mat board because the cut is set for it, but practice beforehand so you know how much to compensate for different thicknesses. This is a great mat cutter and well worth the investment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great product!!! I'm very impressed with this cutter! Keep in mind you still have to do your part to create perfect mats for your photographs, but when you do, the window really will drop out of the finished mat when you raise the cutting support. I recommend using a framing square to make sure everything is square before cutting a lot of frames. Watch the video tutorial before you begin and if you do it just like the person demonstrates, you will be a very happy person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Logan Graphics and B&H Photo - Perfect Combo! I simply wanted to start framing my own pictures, certificates, etc., and after reading numerous reviews felt that this was the perfect cutter. I wanted the full size capability, and though I considered the Elite model, it actually ended up being cheaper to buy this model and purchase the additional accessories separately that normally come with the Elite. Strange but true. As per the instructions on the Logan Graphics website, I checked to see that the cutter was square - and everything was perfect right out of the box. I read some reviews that complained about poorly applied stickers for measurements, and difficulty repeating even basic cuts. Nothing could be further from the truth for me - everything seemed well made, and well put together. the measurements were dead accurate, and my first double mat project had the cut-outs dropping away perfectly after the final cut. And major kudos to B&H as well - I ordered this from Toronto, Ontario using the pre-payment option for duties for international delivery. My order was shipped the same day I submitted it, it arrived in 3 days at my door, the pre-paid duty fee was extremely reasonable, and even factoring in US/CAN exchange and duty (free shipping to CAN!), the total cost was hundreds less than the best Canadian option.
