Onkyo C-7070 overview

  • 1Description

Building upon their excellence in the realm of high fidelity home audio components, Onkyo presents the C-7070 Compact Disc Player. This is for those who desire a little more than a standard CD player -- it boasts dual high-quality Wolfson 192kHz/24-bit DACs, precision engineering to reduce vibrations, a precision clock for optimal timing of digital signals, and a silent disc mechanism with solid die-cast aluminum tray. Onkyo's attention to detail can be found in every aspect of this audiophile-grade CD player, starting from the ground up.

The C-7070 features two digital audio outputs, analog audio outputs, a headphone jack and USB port on the front panel which allows you to connect your iPod or iPhone, or a USB mass storage device. Clearly, the C-7070 is designed for the true music lover looking for ultimate fidelity in audio reproduction.

DIDRC (Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry)
Borrowed from Onkyo's hi-fi components, DIDRC technology reduces dynamic noise. Despite being beyond the normal range of human hearing, frequencies above 100 kHz are susceptible to clock pulse and other forms of distortion from digital devices. Such distortion in the super-high frequency range can produce "beat interference" which in turn affects the character or atmosphere of the original sound. By improving linearity and reducing distortion in the super-high frequency range, DIDRC effectively reduces perceptible noises and delivers clear, faithful audio.
Precision Clock
The C-7070 features a precise clocking mechanism that controls and coordinates the timing of all digital signal processes. This CD player uses a state-of-the-art crystal oscillator that achieves a frequency deviation of +/-10 ppm -- much lower than with a conventional oscillator.
Wolfson 192 kHz / 24-bit DACs
High-quality Wolfson digital-to-analog converters work to optimize analog audio performance -- the player incorporates a separate 24-bit WM8742 DAC for the left and right channel. Although these DACs can process 2-channel audio on a single chip, Onkyo employs separate chips for each stereo channel to ensure the most accurate digital-to-analog conversion.
Silent Disc Mechanism With Die-Case Tray
The CD drive is affixed to four supports made of rigid, machined brass and provides exceptional resistance to internal vibrations. The disc tray is precision engineered from high rigidity, die-cast aluminum. The design and materials combine to offer smooth, silent operation.
Fully Flat Anti-Vibration Chassis
Build quality starts from the ground up with a highly rigid, 1.6mm thick, fully flat chassis that provides excellent protection against vibrations.
Floating Circuit Board Construction
The main circuit board inside the CD-7070 is not directly connected to the chassis -- it is "floating" for added protection against vibrations from the chassis and CD drive mechanism. This allows for longer life and cleaner audio.

    Onkyo C-7070 reviews

C-7070 Compact Disc Player is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nearly as good as vinyl!! After going back to vinyl for that better analog sound, I deceided to check out some of the newer DACs. After reading around, came to the conclsuion that a newer, upgraded CD player might help. Chose the Onkyo C7070 from various reviews and specialist sites. Seemed like the best value in the price range. did not want to spend $5K!!!Very pleased with the sound. Makes our old CD collection come alive again. Now we are excited about buying new CDs and the comparison to our vinyl collection is hard to define. definitely an upgrade to our older Sony CD player. Well worth the money. As regards faetures etc, the I-pod USB port is a real plus. User controls are simple and layout is conventional. Overall, a good looking system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful sound I bought this to replace a Cambridge Audio Azur 640C CD player which had great sound but finally gave up the ghost. The salesman at B&H recommended this Onkyo as a suitable replacement. The C-7070 is solidly built and functionally laid out. It works very well with my system and reproduces the music beautifully. I am delighted with the quality of the sound. One reviewer wrote that his unit died within 6 months, so I bought the 2-year extra warranty. I hope the Onkyo lasts and is reliable. So far, so good. I would recommend it highly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good sound, poor tracking Replaced an old Sony with what I thought would be the last cd player I would buy. After six months it started to skip and track poorly. Gave up on it after cd's started to lock up and I had to unplug the machine to turn it off. The sound was great but the remote seem to suffer from and lack of design thought. Maybe I was just unlucky on this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great CD Player! I love this CD player. The sound is incredible provided you have a good receiver and speakers which if you're spending this kind of money for a CD player, you undoubtedly do. The headphone jack with volume control is a very nice touch. Mine tracks beautifully, but then, I treat my discs like valued vinyl LPs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from C-7070 is what Onkyo say it is The C-7070 has very good sounding DACs that good for quality sounding speakers and headphones listening. The unit USB link add to how you can play your favorite music sources like Apple I devices or USBs. I like using my iPod on this player, MP3s running into its quality DACs give it a good CD quality sound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you love music, this player's for you. You can easily tell where the extra money goes into this mammoth cd player. I was skepitcal myself, until I popped in a disc. You will hear sounds you will never hear on other players. If Onkyo could make this in a six disc changer, it would be perfect, but overall a great buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from STUNNING CD PLAYBACK PARALLELS VINYL LPs In a word, I find commercial Redbook CD playback on the Onkyo C-7070 stunning. Using both Axiom M80 tower speakers and Sennheiser HD 448 headphones, rock, pop, show tune, and instrumental selections are clear, accurate and very musical. Playback using direct setting parallels warmth of my first love, vinyl LPs, which allows me to hear the music as the artist and recording engineer intended. NOTE: This CD player is connected to the Onkyo A-9070 integrated amplifier, representing the component set-up recommended by the manufacturer. Connection by coaxial optic cable guarantees 75 ohm matching. The C-7070 produces sound and detail I never before heard on standard CDs played previously dozens of times on vintage Technics, Sony, and recent Yamaha and TEAC equipment. Teaming of the A-9070 and C-7070 represents the finest home digital music listening experience of my life. Both the fascia panel and remote control are easy to read, intuitive, and simple to operate. The C-7070 build is a throwback to old school durability with modern design elegance. As a point of reference in judging the value of this review to consumer decisions, it may be beneficial to know my music enjoyment proclivities. I own over 3500 pampered vinyl LPs and rely on a customized KAB Technics ML-1210MK5 turntable with an AT 440MLa cartridge. For me, compact discs (numbering over 1000) have been acquired as a default medium over the past 30 years. HOWEVER, the Onkyo C-7070 is testing my ears and challenging the audio prejudices I have internalized for half a century. In other words, the C-7070 has made listening to CDs a fun and satisfying adventure. What a treat! Before getting off the stage, one word of warning to potential C-7070 buyers. If you have been prone to abusing your CDs, resulting in scratches, mars, unidentified sticky substances, and smudges on the playing surface, this unit may not be your best choice. For me, I have little problem with the C-7070's penchant for cleanliness; as a vinyl LP lover, I baby my grooves -- be they PVC etched or encoded with Os and 1s. Based on the C-7070 Instruction Manual warnings and my experience in playing some previously owned CDs, be forewarned that the unit balks at errant particles on the shiny disc. It seems to exude an attitude that says: Give me a cared-for shiny disc, and I'll give you an honest and pleasurable feast for your ears! You can read the jaw-dropping and mind-numbing specifications and features for yourself. All I can say is that I now have the perfect compact disc player to complement my vinyl LP proclivities. Well done, Onkyo! And, speaking of well done, kudos to the good folks at B&H. The double boxed and well packed shipment was received 2 work days after the order was placed. Thanks to the user friendly ordering process, shipment confirmation, and UPS tracking link, I knew precisely when to expect the C-7070. Purchasing the CD player from B&H wasn't my first encounter with the company, and it certainly will not be the last.
