Sony ECM-VG1 overview

  • 1Description

The Sony ECM-VG1 Electret Condenser Shotgun Microphone is a rugged, all-metal short shotgun microphone with a supercardioid polar pattern, making it a well suited choice for camcorder-mounted and boom pole operation alike. The included windscreen has been designed to maximize wind-noise rejection.

The windscreen's rigid construction creates space between the microphone and outer part of the windscreen, minimizing the transfer of energy from the windscreen to the microphone itself. Also included are a microphone boom mount, spacer, 2 stand adaptors and a short XLR cable. A low-cut roll off switch further minimizes low-frequency noise due to wind noise, mechanical noise and proximity effect. The ECM-VG1 requires external 40 to 52V phantom power, and is terminated with an XLR output connector.

Specially designed windscreen creates space between the microphone and outer layer of the windscreen, resulting in maximum wind noise suppression
Supercardioid polar pattern effectively minimizes off-axis noise
Ideal for camera and boom mounted applications
Includes a threaded microphone mount for easy boom attachment
Low-cut roll off filter eliminates low-frequency noise

    Sony ECM-VG1 reviews

ECM-VG1 Electret Condenser Shotgun Microphone is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Includes a great surprise! I use the ECM-VG1 shotgun mic with a Sony PXW-Z150. I nearly got another Audio Technica ATR-875R, but that would have meant getting another fuzzy and this comes with (as pictured). The surprise? The included fuzzy has a cage inside so the mic element is truly isolated from the wind - this is very different when compared to using a foam windscreen under a fuzzy add-on and more like using a much more expensive zeppelin. I had a Sony ECM-XM1 that came with a NEX-EA50UH, so I was familiar with the mic's characteristics - but I sold the EA50UH with the XM1... and I like the ATR-875R. So... I flipped a coin. I am happy with the ECM-VG1 and would buy it again... the included fuzzy on a plastic cage makes a good mic great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not famous, but a jewel indeed. I bought this mic after being recommended by B&H live chat. For the price point that this mic is at, I was expecting something mediocre. It turns out that I really like the audio quality. The design is very intelligent and shows me that Sony knows what they are dong and they have experience with making diamonds. The XLR cable that comes in the box is light weight. The mic is light weight. They provide an excellent wind screen. It fits well on my Sony PXWX 70 camcorder. I would even use this as a boom mic for short film work. I think that Sony is under rated and that if put to the test, it may even be better than some of the Sennheiser and Rode mics. My advice is for you to try it for yourself. It is an electret mic, so keep it away from condensation and water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT MIC AND GREAT FOR EVENT SHOOTING The SONY ECM-VG1 is an excellent microphone. The quality is far better than some of the more expensive other brands. I used it in a wedding shoot this past weekend and it far exceeded my expectations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Mic Compared to the Sony ECM-XM1 (which I have used for several years), the ECM-VG1 is marginally superior in that it has a low-cut switch to help minimize low frequency rumble. Otherwise I do not detect any significant difference when mounted on a video camera. I have not used it in a more controlled environment, but I don't believe it would measure up to the Sennheiser ME66 K6. It is a little longer, overall, than I would have preferred, but I would not hesitate to buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice mic for someone just starting out I am just getting started with video production and I have a budget that resembles that. For a mic that is under $300, it has done more than I could have asked for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent Shotgun Mic This is a decent shotgun mic for a decent price. The low pass filter works well to get rid of a lot of enviornmetal noise both outside and inside. It works much better than the onboard mics.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Natural Sound Mates to the camera and gives adequate coverage for natural sound. Some things just aren't flashy by nature. What counts is that it fits the Sony cam mounts and works fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sony ECM-VG1 Not in stock when I ordered the mic. Still able to receive it in less than 2 weeks. Worked well 1st time out. Looking forward to comparing to internal mic.
