Kodak Portra 400 Reviews

Great large format film!

I really like shooting in natural light so it is nice to have a bit of a higher film speed . This film scans very well (low grain) and has beautiful color. Even though it costs a bit more - I think it is worth it!

Wonderful but expensive

4 stars instead of 5 ONLY because of the cost. Its ability to render color and detail are simply stellar. Phenomenal film. I just wish it was a bit less expensive.

Best Color Negative Emulsion Ever Made

Beautiful skin tones, latitude for days, scans like a charm, great pushability, and extremely fine grain (not that I worry about that in 8x10). This stock is a gift to film shooters. It's way to expensive though! If Kodak Alaris can get the cost back under $$dollars I would shoot a ton more. As it is now, special occasions.

Expensive? Yes. Awesome? Yes.

Let's be honest here, you didn't take up 8x10 photography because it was cheap, right? That being said, the cost of this film really gives you pause before taking a shot. It's absolutely wonderful stuff, though. The images are just beautiful.

Really great product :)

It's really great that we continue to have film available in large sheet sizes in this digital era. I've been using this film on sets that are dimly lit intentionally, so Portra 400's versatility and push-ability makes this an ideal product for me. I still feel that the textures and details that get captured in a shot on 8x10 is unmatched by digital means.

Great Film

Astonishing tonal scale makes flesh look beautiful and translucent.

The best and a price that matches it

*Let me preface by saying I'm a college student living off minimum wage and my school's work-study program* Yes, this film is expensive and yes, processing, scanning, etc. comes at a cost. No matter what fancy little mirrorless camera comes out, it'll never compare to the depth of field and feel of an 8x10 color negative. Holding this 8x10 negative against a light box is a completely independent and amazing experience. I highly recommend you (at the very least) buy a box and give it a shot.
