OCZ Vertex 3 overview

  • 1Description

If you wanted the rocketship equivalent of a solid-state hard drive, OCZ is there for you. Designed for your laptop and adaptable to your desktop (with the included bracket), OCZ's 240GB Vertex 3 SATA 6Gbps 2.5" Solid State Drive is an internal solid-state storage drive that delivers 240GB of memory, outrageously fast performance, and solid reliability. With this hard drive upgrade, you will notice significantly faster load times for games, programs, large video or audio files, or your operating system than if you were using a traditional hard disk drive. The drive features maximum read speeds of up to 550 MB/s and maximum write speeds of up to 520 MB/s. It has also clocked random 4K file writes at up to 60,000 IOPS and random 4K file reads at up to 40,000 IOPS.

So as to perform this quickly, the drive utilizes solid state MLC NAND flash components, the blazing SATA 6Gbps bus interface, and a SandForce 2281 controller. Beyond speed, it also features native TRIM support so your drive will perform over the long haul and RAID support so that you can combine it with other drives for greater, more secure memory. Along with these features, this drive boasts the same advantages of other solid state drives in that it uses solid-state technologies to perform with less energy, noise, and required power than mechanical hard disk drives. It also is shock resistant so you most likely won't need to worry about your drive if you accidentally bump or drop your computer, unlike traditional hard disk drives. If you wanted a hard drive upgrade that just might require a helmet, jumpsuit, and safety straps, you just might have found it.

Delivers maximum read speeds of up to 550 MB/s and maximum write speeds of up to 520 MB/s. It has also clocked random 4K file writes at up to 60,000 IOPS and random 4K file reads at up to 40,000 IOPS

    OCZ Vertex 3 reviews

240GB Vertex 3 SATA III 2.5" Solid State Drive is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Broke after one year This SSD is very fast and 256gb is plenty of space for your main drive. I bought mine on April 2011 but at the end of July 2012 it just stopped working. It just showed a solid green yellow light and wasn't recognized by the bios. Using a HDD, as a temporary backup, was painful, I couldn't do multitasking without the whole system just slowing down. I submitted an OCZ ticket, they responded within two days with an RMA, and about a week and half later they sent me a new similar SSD, since it has a 3 year warranty. Now that was good service, so five stars. So total downtime of two weeks for me. This also shows SSD is not fool proof and although it is technically able to withstand more G force drops, it doesn't mean the electronics won't just stop working. Always back up your data, or learn it the hard way.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from MUST HAVE FOR INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY There comes a time when you gotta bite the bullet and get one. You can't put it off any more. I bought two of these babies and haven't looked back. Why did I wait so long to get these SSD's? The answer is I waited for the price to come down... I think it's still too high for the amount of storage you get but it's slowly coming down. >>>>> THE GOOD: These SSD's are fast... really fast. It has increased my laptops speed by a factor of 6 or more. The first thing I noticed is the boot up speed. My MacBookPro (laptop) usually took about a minute before everything was up and running. Suprise, suprise... it only takes 9 seconds with this drive. My workflow is a breeze now as I'm not waiting tediously for tasks to finish. I use Final Cut X for video production and would only use it on my Mac Pro (tower) because when I tried it on my MacBookPro it would bring the machine to slow grind. Now I don't have that problem since installing this drive. I even use Final Cut X on the MacBookPro and it's fast. Rendering video is no longer a problem and I'm actually enjoying using the laptop. >>>>> THE BAD: Price - still way too high. This is why I gave it the 3 star rating! Supplied bracket does not fit Mac Pro case. >>>>> CONCLUSION: If you got the cash get one (or two) because your productivity will increase and you'll be glad just like me. The drive comes with a bracket to install in a PC case which is handy. (WARNING: the bracket will NOT install in Mac Pro case).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works like a champ First off, against advice from all and sundry, I bought this for use in a 2009 MacBook Pro. This is the one that everyone and their brother has reported as not working with SSDs. Speculation for the reasons ranges far and wide, from insufficient power to insufficient shielding to bad cables to incompatible chipsets. Well, I installed it, and it didn't work properly. And then I wrapped it in aluminum foil, and (probably more important) wrapped the cable that goes from it to the motherboard in aluminum foil, and reinstalled it. It appears that the problem is at least partly interference-related, because it immediately started working. I get well over 200 megabytes per second sustained performance. It's never had a single error (according to SMART tools). Further, a lot of people claim that it doesn't work with Boot Camp, but I have it working fine with my Windows XP Boot Camp. (However, note that installing it was a giant pain in the tuchus: an XP SP3 install disk with slipstreamed SATA drivers has a known problem where sometimes it fails to properly validate the XP CD key, resulting in you being stuck at the XP CD key screen forever, with it never taking valid keys. Just bite the bullet and get Windows 7.) Their support for Macs doesn't appear to be very good: flashing the ROMs from the Mac requires some stupid combination of rebooting off of a live Linux CD and screwing around with a variety of files and such. Fortunately, if you have Boot Camp set up and working, you can just flash it from that, but I'm deducting a star from their rating because they claim to support the Mac and then do so incredibly poorly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast...fast....faster Installed in my sandy bridge desktop (p8p67 pro motherboard). No problems whatsoever, it was recognised and formatted. This is the best way to speed up your pc. The only negative is that it is still a little costly but this is still great value. It smashes my older ocz vertex 2

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WORKS! Been using this drive with the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle. Item works flawlessly. Using Voyager PCI-X capture card and Voyager Q Dock using esata III. My mac is cutting this uncompressed HD footage like Standard DV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Old Mac Pro runs so much faster! I knew my internal HD on my Mac Pro Early 2008 was getting old, I was having a ton of problems with software for no reason, and knew I needed a new internal HD. I decided to take the plunge and buy a SSD, and purchased this Vertex 3 Sata 2.5. It said it came with an adapter to fit into desktop computers - but it did NOT work on my Mac Pro. I ended up using a different mount to fit it in properly, but now that my computer is running not only quickly but silently, I couldn't be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Performance Boosr I swapped the original hard disk for this Vertex 3 SSD in my Toshiba Portege R835. I made a set of recovery DVDs using toshiba's tools, and then used the DVDs to make a fresh install of Windows 7 on the SDD. (fresh install is strongly advised for SSDs, especially since they are usually smaller than the HDD they replace) The cold boot time is now about 15 seconds! Entire system performance is very snappy and fast. A worthwhile investment if you had a slow sluggish PC

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wicked fast! this ssd is super fast. i installed it into my 2011 macbook pro. so far so good. people have been complaining about a couple of things. this shipped with a 2.06 firmware which has been known to be unstable, at least in the windows environment. the other is that you can't do firmware updates in osx... you need to boot into linux, or take the drive out and install it as a second drive in a windows machine. i wish these companies make firmware updaters for macs.
