Manfrotto Unica V overview

  • 1Description

The white Stile Collection: Unica V Messenger Bag from Manfrotto is the kind of quality bag you'll want with you whether on a day trip to the country or international airline journey. On the surface, this bag may appear to be just a garden variety shoulder tote but once examined, you find that it has many features that make it a stand-out among such bags. Let's take a closer look at what the Unica 5 offers.

The main compartment is 15.7" (39.9cm) tall and holds a DSLR with a mounted lens in shooting position. In addition, you can also bring along an extra lens, flash, various accessories plus a 17" (43.2cm) Apple laptop or a 15.4" standard laptop - all this in a bag that weighs a mere 2.2 lb (1.0kg). The organizer pocket stores your iPhone, MP3 player, map, pens, computer support cables, batteries, memory cards and sunglasses. That's quite a bundle of gear for a bag. And, it's all organized by a system of padded, movable dividers that can be arranged to suit your needs. But it doesn't stop there. Sooner or later, every photographer uses a tripod and this bag will allow to you to store a Manfrotto pocket tripod inside its own space. Now you can get those night or long exposure shots.

There are times when you need instant access to your equipment. You can reach the contents by two methods. First, the main compartment has a rear zipper that is used to quickly get your laptop out for airport security checkpoints. Or, if you prefer, use the quick-release compression clasp to open and close the protective flap that guards the interior of the bag. Made from a water-repellent nylon, the bag is carried by a comfortable, adjustable shoulder strap that has a padded cushion.

The Unica 5 Messenger Bag offers you a host of features at a reasonable price that should make it an appealing choice when you're in the market for a lightweight, functional and stylish shoulder bag that is manufactured by Manfrotto, a company with a solid track record of producing high-quality photo gear.

    Manfrotto Unica V reviews

Stile Collection: Unica V Messenger Bag (White) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from good in theory, big in person this bag is the best... in THEORY. It can fit everything in unique ways --throw an umbrella in the tripod portion when it's raining, put another insert bag, fit a 17 inch laptop, and doesn't look like a camera bag... but it is just SO LARGE! Abnormally large. I would feel less nerdy in a backpack, possibly. The padding feels week and I don't feel entirely secure putting my brand new equipment in there. If you are trying to carry a laptop, lens, camera body, flash, AKA over $5000 of gear then you better support your equipment well and as much as I hate them, get a back pack. You just cant carry all of those things subtly. It gets real heavy if you stuff it, too. Get a messenger bag for when you are just carrying a camera. Nonetheless, I think I will keep it as a eh, I'll just try to squeeze everything in here bag, as the quick access is super convenient when going on long bus rides, or when you are trying to switch lenses quickly on a shoot. It's also cheap enough that you don't feel like returning it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost perfect bag I looked at hundreds of bags, but few met my modest criteria. I wanted the bag to look as discreet as possible, so that it would not look like a camera bag, especially since I would be carrying a camera with attached 18-135 zoom lens and another camera with a prime lens attached, and both lenses wearing flexible rubber hoods. It would also have to have enough room for at least two or three other prime lenses, 62mm polarizer and 62mm UV filters, SDHC cards, etc. The only shortcoming is that this bag does not have enough compartments for my stated needs, probably because it is not exclusively a camera bag, but serves multiple purposes. B & H to the rescue! I perused the large section of padded bag inserts and after checking the measurements of the inside of my bag, found that the Tenba Photo Insert F/Pro Digital 2.0 fit perfectly in the main section of the Unica V. Camera heaven? I can now place both cameras face down, with lenses and flexible hoods attached. This provides easy, safe and quick access to them for grab shots, since there is also a zipper opening on the top of the Manfrotto Unica V bag. I do not use camera straps, so the cameras can be accessed instantly. I have wrist straps attached, but only use them, if I will be using the camera for more than a few grab shots. The bag looks quite stylish, yet discreet, which should not be a surprise, since it was designed by Prada. It does not scream designer bag or camera bag. I recommend this bag, especially if you want to carry two bodies with attached lenses, like I do, without having a bag sticking out a foot from your body. If your cameras are larger than my Pentax K-x and K-5, then you could consider the Unica VII, which is of identical design, but with more volume. An added bonus is that this bag also has a bottom compartment, with zipper closure, that can carry a small travel tripod. I selected the Oben AT-3400 4-Section Aluminum Folding Tripod w/ BA-00T Ball Head. With head removed, it can fold onto itself and is only about one foot long, but is very solid. Amazing! I have tried quite a few bags over the years, but this arrangement is close to perfect, as is the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great travel bag If you are looking to buy strictly a camera bag this bag will not suit you unless you are carrying lots of equipment (camera couple lenses and flashes, small tripod and accessories) because of it's size. It is however a grat travel bag. You can indeed safely store (like I do) a dslr with extra lens, possibly a laptop, a compact tripod a flash and still have room for personal belongings like a bottle of water and a small drink and a book for instance. It is also very stilish and does not scream out Camera bag at first glance. It's overall well built and a great deal for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bag This bag can hold everything that I need to bring to a shoot. I can carry my laptop, canon 1ds mkii, 24-70and 70-200 easily. I even put my polaroid camera in there with the extra film hidden in the tripod section. Has lots of pockets for CF cards, business cards, or whatever else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with this bag. I shopped for a long time for a bag to hold my Nikon D7000, the 18-105 kit lens, a 55-300, and a 50 mm prime, along with my wallet, keys, phone and possibly a 13 macbook pro. I looked at a Crumpler and a few other recommended bags, but they were a lot more money, not particularly attractive, and not that convenient to use for a family out with the kids. I also didn't want a bag that screamed expensive camera in here. This bag met my qualifications for size (I do not have a tripod and actually use that compartment for my wallet and a few personal items), is comfortable to carry, adequately padded, and reasonably attractive. I really like the quick-access zipper on the top of the bag and the fact that the tripod compartment puts a few extra inches between my camera/lenses and the ground (only bag I found with that feature), as well as the organizer pocket (the slot for a mini tripod will hold an iphone in an Otterbox), and the zipper compartment in the back (perfect for tickets and other items I need quick access to on vacation). I debated between this bag and the next one larger, and am glad I got this one - it's about as big as I'd want to carry unless I was going on an overseas trip with all my equipment, laptop, etc. If it matters to you, the bottom and back of the bag are actually black. I didn't care for that at first, but it will probably keep the bag a lot cleaner! If this bag has any faults, I do wish the main compartment had velcro and dividers all the way across instead of just 1/2 way.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from very stylish but less than secure This is a great looking, roomy bag, and there is a zipped pocket at the bottom for a travel-size tripod. However, anything small packed into the main body is at risk of falling out through the sides. The top flap closes with a solid buckle that can be tightened, and there are additional velcro fasteners; a zipper across the top allows access when the bag is battened down, but it is still easy for small items to escape the bag through the sides, which cannot be secured. That said, the bag sure looks good and easily passes for a designer messenger bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I need I'm a passionate amateur, and I searched for a shoulder bag which hadn't this Camera bag look, something a bit more discrete. And another criteria was that it should also hold my laptop and some other stuff, like a notebook and accessories for my time out on the field (more street and cities). This bag met all my expectations, it's a great everyday bag, for 1 Camera (7D with 24-105 attached) + another lens + accessories. For me it's the perfect bag, the only inconvenience is the price, it's not really cheap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for small video camera I'm using this bag for a Canon XA10. It's big enough to fit the camera with a shotgun microphone attached and has plenty of room for lav mics, hand held mics, xlr cables, extra batteries, and a DSLR. After that It's full The only things I don't like are 1) the zippers are really jingly and noisy, but I wrapped them in gaff tape to stop this, and 2) the metal buckle dings like a bell when you hit it on something when it's not latched to the latch part.
