The microphone exhibits a supercardioid polar pattern at low to midrange frequencies and transitions to a lobar pattern in high frequencies, providing uniform attenuation of 10 to 20 dB from 125 Hz to 1 kHz between 90° and 120° off axis. The rejection pattern for high frequencies is also consistent, further contributing to the mic's transparent, undistorted off-axis tone. Your dialogue, foley, and sound effects can be recorded with full dynamics and clarity, thanks to the MKH 8060's wide frequency response, transformerless output, and high SPL handling.

Performs in Adverse Environmental Conditions
When your work takes you outdoors, you're bound to encounter humidity and condensation, which can cause many mics to fail. The MKH 8060's RF circuit design makes it highly immune to moisture, allowing you to reliably capture high-quality audio in normal and adverse environmental conditions.
Professional Sound Quality
Offering the same sonic signature as Sennheiser's other 8000-Series microphones, the MKH 8060 was engineered with the experienced professional in mind. Its 50 Hz to 25 kHz frequency response incorporates a gentle rise above 3 kHz to increase intelligibility and a natural bass roll-off to mitigate rumble. Its low self-noise of 11 dBA and ultrahigh sensitivity of -24 dB enable studio-worthy signal purity without requiring noise reduction and gain boosting in postproduction.
Phantom Powered
The MKH 8060 boasts a transformerless and fully floating balanced output for optimal signal integrity. Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 44 to 52 VDC phantom power, the MKH 8060 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.
Digital Compatibility
When used with the optional MZD 8000 digital module, the MKH 8060 becomes a digital microphone that outputs AES42 signal at up to 24-bit / 192 kHz resolution and allows remote control of DSP functions such as low-cut filtering and attenuation.
Ideal for Boompole or Camera Mounting
The MKH 8060's metal body features a nonreflective Nextel coating to prevent distracting visual reflections. Mount the MKH 8060 directly on a stand or boompole using the supplied mic clip, or attach it to a camera with a shoe shockmount such as the Smallrig 1859. Alternatively, place the MKH 8060 in the separately available Sennheiser MZS 20-1 combination shockmount, pistol grip, and stand adapter to prevent the transfer of vibrations to the microphone.
Windscreen Minimizes Wind Noise
The MKH 8060 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Sennheiser MZH 20-1 furry windshield (available separately).

Well, what can you say? Best mic with the 416; they are actually very close: this has a light lesser range but it's also more portable. Audio is terrific!

I do podcasts mostly as audio only on a Shure SM7B, but I also do video podcasts and wanted a clean sound without a mike in my face. After reading reviews on the 8060, I pulled the trigger and couldn't be happier. The sound is clean and crisp and lives up to its reputation.

Most amazing mic ever for doc work

For the past 4 years, Ive used all Rode gear, especially the NTG3, which I grew to love. Then, on a recent shoot for a client, it stopped working. I got it fixed and it remains an important part of my arsenal, but the experience made me think about an upgrade, and then using the NTG3 as a backup.  It was a very difficult decision to make, since, for whatever reason, its way easier to justify the purchase of a 2k lens than it is a higher end microphone. Weird. Finally though, after a lot of deliberation and tests, and I got the 8060. The main word that comes to mind after using this on a few shoots is: Wow. Its small, light, and draws very little attention to itself. Its far shorter than the NTG3. And this mic makes dialogue sound like you were actually there when you re-listen to the footage. Its hard to believe. There are a lot of times now where I dont bother using a lav at all since I know this mic will capture exactly what I want. What Im getting at is that, as much as I liked the NTG3, the 8060 blows it out of the water. Theres no comparison. As a one person crew a lot of times operating in dangerous locations around the world, its important to keep a low profile, while also capturing the best audio possible under difficult circumstances. If thats what youre looking for, look no further. This mic will seriously change the way you think about, and plan for audio on shoots. Dont get me wrong, a good lav does wonders in a lot of situations as well, but I found this mic to be ultra clear, and perfect for my purposes. It was also amazing for ambient pickup, and slightly off axis pick when people are having a conversation.  If youre on the fence about this, two words of advice: dont be. Its maybe the greatest equipment purchase Ive made in the last 4 years.

I bought this back in early 2015 and it has NEVER let me down!� So forgiving on your subject being a little off-axis!� I used this mic up in the mountains where it was dead silent and that's where it REALLY shined!

Impressions after heavy use of 2 years

Pros: Good rejection in small size, high output, low noise, has less off axis harshness or thinness, reasonable max SPL rating and immunity to moisture. Cons: Off axis dullness. See the polar pattern for 16kHz, post 15 degrees off axis, it falls off drastically compared to other frequencies, this is NOT the case for longer shotguns like MKH60 or 416. This means recordings sound muffled when sound source is wider than 30 degrees. I am somewhat regretting not buying the pricier (holy grail) Schoeps CMC641 which has the ideal supercardioid pattern.

A wonderful mic for the right use, excellent for outdoor field recording especially, loud signal and low noise floor. I found the extra included here mostly needing replacement, and not great quality : The wind cover always suffers from wind noise outside- with the short mic doesn't completely cover the holes at the same time as the shock mount rubber grips can hold onto it (this might be remedied by a better shock mount from Rycote) The cables I thought would be fine but the angled connectors shake around! Terrible idea for location recording when you are moving around. If you need one, The boom pole is quality and is maybe the only reason to get this bundle in my opinion. The handle can pretty much be tossed, not sure that it is worth having in your sound kit. It could work but its not a good solution, and easily gives handling noise.

Sensitive and below-the-basement noise floor

Having had my eye (and ears) on this mic for some time, I recently made the plunge--wow, I'm impressed. This is one great mic! I'd heard that it is very sensitive and it is absolutely true. I had to turn down the gain way more than expected. And the noise floor--it is way low. Needless to say, I'm impressed and happy with the purchase. Great mic, Sennheiser.

The Rycote InVision INV-HG mkIII Microphone Suspension - Lyre Shockmount, BH #R YINVHGMKIII , would be a good option for a shockmount for the Sennheiser MH 8060 shotgun mic. this shockmount id lightweight and features a lyre- style suspension, and would connect to a boom pole with a 3/8-inch thread.

Once the Sennheiser MKH 8060 Moisture-Resistant Short Shotgun Microphone is covered with the Rycote Standard Hole Classic Softie Wind-Screen, there is still a few inches on the end of the mic for a shockmount. Both are good, the 416 is more directional, but it can be a bit too drastic in directionality if the subject even rocks around a bit it can be less forgiving, but the 416 will reject more side noise. The 8060 has a higher sensitivity.
