Glyph Technologies 8TB ForteRAID External Hard Drive Array with Hitachi Drives
Key Features
  • SATA II 3Gb/s 7200 RPM Enterprise Drives
  • RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 10 & Spanning
  • eSATA Port x 1
  • FireWire 800 (9-Pin) Ports x 2
Loaded with four Hitachi drives, the Glyph Technologies 8TB ForteRAID External Hard Drive Array is a production-quality external RAID array. It's designed for professional audio and video production. The ForteRAID features an ample 8TB of storage capacity; each of the four SATA II 3Gb/s disk drives is responsible for 2TB. The ForteRAID is equipped with multiple interface options, which affords greater flexibility when working. There are two FireWire 800 terminals, an eSATA interface, one FireWire 400, and one USB 2.0 port. The array can reach transfer speeds up to 3Gbps and the eSATA interface has a sustained transfer rate up to 230Mbps when using the high-performance EC2 eSATA card.

The ForteRAID is equipped with software selectable RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 10 and spanning modes. RAID 0 is designed for increased speeds, and RAID 1 offers data redundancy and real-time backup. RAID 3 and 5 modes offer speed and data redundancy by striping data across all drives or storing data on a dedicated drive. RAID 10 creates two pairs of mirrored drives, which yields a good balance of protection and speed.

The internal RAID modes are set by the Glyph Manager software, which also displays drive health status, case/drive temperature, fan speed and any drive errors or rebuild failures. It uses an array of LEDs to alert users of potential problems, allowing time for data backup before a drive failure.

The ForteRAID affords both speed and protection. It has sufficient capacity and supports NLE applications like Avid Xpress and Adobe Premiere. Glyph has tested the ForteRAID with Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools as well. The four disk drives are housed in a scratch-resistant aluminum enclosure, which matches the aesthetic of other high-end audio and video gear. It's compatible with PC, Mac, Linux, and it features an auto-switching, universal power supply for international use.

Multiple Interfaces
The ForteRAID offers blazing speed in a desktop package. You can connect via eSATA, FireWire 400, 800 or USB 2.0. It gives you the freedom to move projects between multiple systems and use the fastest interface available on each system. With eSATA, the ForteRAID can reach speeds up to 3Gbps
Software Selectable RAID Modes
• RAID 0 (striping) is designed for increased speed but offers no redundancy benefits
• RAID 1 (mirroring) uses only two of the 4 internal drives. It offers data redundancy and real-time backup by writing the same data to two hard drives at the same time
• RAID 3 (striping with a dedicated parity drive) offers speed and data redundancy by using parity data which is stored on a dedicated drive
• RAID 5 (striping with distributed parity) offers speed and data redundancy by using parity data which is striped across all drives
• RAID 10 (striping + mirroring) creates two pairs of mirrored drives, and stripes across them for a very good balance of speed and redundancy
• Spanning mode simply shows all four drives as one large volume
Glyph Manager Software Utility
A software utility for setting the internal RAID mode, Glyph Manager 4 also displays health status of the enclosure and drives inside. It offers a rich user interface which reports case temperature, fan speed, individual drive health and temperature, as well as any drive errors or rebuild failures. Glyph Manager constantly monitors the health of the ForteRAID as a background task using S.M.A.R.T. commands
Safe Enclosure
The ForteRAID is constructed with a scratch-resistant aluminum chassis and includes a large 80 mm low-RPM fan. The aluminum chassis offers additional heat transfer properties while allowing the system to be lightweight and portable
Flexible Power
Glyph uses an internal power supply in the ForteRAID, which is fully auto-switching for international use
