Custom Brackets TILT HEAD AS overview

  • 1Description

The Custom Brackets Tilt Head AS is a precision-machined aluminum head that was designed for use with a monopod. The head features an Arca Swiss-style quick-release system that can be oriented in two positions to accommodate either a camera plate or a plate for a long lens (not included). The clamp is loosened and tightened by first pushing in the quick-release lever, and then turning it. You can easily reorient the quick-release clamp 90° by using the supplied Allen key.

The head attaches to a monopod via the Tilt Head AS's 3/8"-16 thread. If your monopod has a 1/4"-20 stud, use a reducer bushing to make the conversion. The head features separate controls for tension (drag) and tilt-lock, which allows for extremely precise adjustments to the tilt. Tilt is possible a full 90° downward and nearly the same range upward.

The Tilt Head AS was designed for the Manfrotto 685B NeoTec monopod, but it will of course work with any other monopod – or a tripod, in case you do not need a panning capability. For the 685B, Custom Brackets offers Anti-Twist Pins for Manfrotto 685B (not included), which install on the bottom of the head to prevent the head from twisting at all once it's installed on the monopod.

Precision-machined for smooth tilt forward and backward
Anodized for a scratch-resistant finish
Separate drag and lock knobs for better control of tilt
Arca Swiss-style quick release for fast setup and storage (bracket or camera/lens plate not included)
For safety, the clamp-locking lever needs to be pushed in order to loosen the Arca-style clamp

Custom Brackets TILT HEAD AS reviews

Tilt Head AS is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally something built heavy enough To handle my 600mm F4.0 and 1dMkIII without worrying about working loose and dumping on me. This is a quality piece of equipment to add to your arsenal. All the ones I tried before would not handle the weight and would shift loose at all the wrong times. Use this on a carbon fiber monopod and love to rest on my shoulder when walking for bird shots. No more worries about a sudden shift of weight, and easily adjusts for tension.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well made, but with some surprises I got this head to use for pole aerial photography with a Nikon D800 and D7100 with Brand R plates. The Custom Brackets Tilt Head is substantial (just over a pound on my postage scale) and fits the Brand R plates nicely. Index marks make it easy to center the camera. Those index marks are on the moving jaw of the clamp, which is just under 2.5 long. The static jaw is 3.5. The anodizing is bright and uniform, but tool marks are visible in several areas. The tilt drag and lock knobs are on opposite sides and (surprise) rotate in opposite directions. The lock knob locks clockwise, while the drag knob tightens counter-clockwise. The dual-orientation feature requires no small effort (surprise #2). If you plan to use this with a lens plate, the longitudinal orientation of the plate that arrives is just fine. But for a lateral camera plate, you have to rotate the clamp. It took me a good 30 minutes to dislodge and reorient it; the guide pins are a tight fit! Too bad they did not design this with a slot and ridge to lock orientation. The slight finish flaws, one reverse-operating knob, weight and difficulty changing orientation are why I rate this a four-star product.
