Electro-Voice RE16 overview

  • 1Description

The RE16 Dynamic Supercardioid Handheld Microphone with Variable-D from Electro-Voice is a Variable-D dynamic supercardioid microphone designed for the most exacting professional use. It is like the RE15, except that it uses a unique blast filter. The blast filter, an integral part of the RE16, permits hand-held and outdoor use without "P-popping" or excessive wind noise. Utilizing the Variable-D design the RE16 features a directional characteristic independent of frequency. The result is a microphone that generates little off axis coloration while providing the greatest rejection of unwanted sounds. A supercardiold, the RE16 provides its greatest rejection at 150° off axis. An easily operated "bass tilt" switch corrects spectrum balance for boom use and other longer reach situations.

Variable-D dynamic podium or handheld microphone
Tight, supercardioid pattern is usually uniform over a wide frequency range and is for uniform sound quality at all pickup angles
Variable-D helps eliminate the up-close bass boost (proximity effect) that can make vocals sound "muddy"
Excellent for podium use where high intelligibility is important
Low Frequency roll-off and bass tilt switch

    Electro-Voice RE16 reviews

RE16 Dynamic Supercardioid Handheld Microphone with Variable-D is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Classic Beauty This mic outclasses almost everything in this price range. It is the legendary RE20 diaphragm in a smaller body with more blast filtering for stage use, with only slight sound compromise.Like the RE20, the RE16 is an everything mic. It sounds great on vocals, acoustic guitars and other instruments, including piano or even drums - for both sound reinforcement and recording. Very natural, uncolored sound, more accurate and extended high frequency response than competitors. More detailed tonal response produces richer overtones for vocals or instruments. Sounds like a good condenser, but much more dynamic headroom, and often smoother highs. (Doesn't have that metallic, nasal sound typical of many condenser mics priced below$.) Absense of proximity effect means the tone does not get more bass sounding up close, but doesn't thin out further away either. Also, the RE16 has better response when addressed somewhat from the side, that is, off-axis. These two features make it so your vocal doesn't disappear when you turn your head to look at guitar, or effects, or another band member. The mix is more consistent because EQ remains more constant. (If you're hooked on prox. effect, you may not like this mic, but your voice will sound better than with virtually any mic under $.) Accurate, flat high frequency response means higher gain before feedback. Bullet-proof construction. Check ... used section for used RE16's. They've been around for a long time for a reason. Sound techs: This mic is almost completely free of off-axis coloration. Consequently leakage is clean and solid sounding, instead of boxy and muddy like a lot of mics that appear to have tighter patterns. To match with SM58 - boost EQ 3dB @ 80 Hz, and cut 3dB above 10 kHz, (relative to EQ settings for SM58). To match Beta87a - boost EQ 3 dB @ 80 Hz, and cut 3dB above 16 kHz, (relative to settings for Beta87a).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for spoken voice in the field This is my go-to mic for tape syncs and other remote voice recordings. In the field, you cannot count on good acoustics or low background noise, so you need to get the mic close to the talker's mouth. Many directional mics will pop and thump on P's and T's when used that way. Due to its variable-D design, the RE-16 is much less susceptible to popping. If you use it with the Electro-voice 376 foam wind filter, it is almost immune to popping, and used super close (an inch or so away) it still has a natural tonal quality. This really helps in getting clear audio in variable situations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Concert Handheld(w/gentle handling) The artist will be pleasantly surprised when they hear how their voice was rendered. This mic has some handling noise and artists must be counseled on gentle handling. This inconvenience aside, the presence and timbre of the RE-16 is unequaled. YOU WANNA HEAR IT? Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great field mic I'm a radio producer and broadcaster, and have used a lot of field mics over the years. This one is the best. I can't tell you engineering specs like other reviewers, but I can tell you my audio is always perfectly crisp with this mic. Very tough mic in the field as well, comparable to the legendary EV635a.
