Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

An ideal portrait-length prime, the Pentax K mount 85mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC from Rokinon pairs a bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with a short-telephoto focal length to suit portraiture and other applications where shallow depth of field is desired. This manual focus lens incorporates one hybrid aspherical element to control chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and even sharpness and illumination. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color neutrality. This lens is also characterized by an internal focusing design, which maintains the overall length during use, as well as an 8-blade rounded diaphragm for a smooth bokeh quality.

This 85mm f/1.4 lens features a Pentax K mount, and is compatible with full-frame and 35mm film cameras, as well as APS-C sensors where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
A fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables extensive control over your focus position for shallow depth of field shooting.
One hybrid aspherical element helps to control chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased clarity and sharpness.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to lens elements to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity.
This manual focus lens features an internal focus design to maintain the overall lens length during use and the front filter mount does not rotate when focusing to better enable working with polarizers, graduated ND, and other filter types that require precise positioning.
A rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out-of-focus quality when using selective focus or shallow depth of field techniques.
This lens features a mechanical aperture coupling that permits the use of aperture priority and automated exposure modes, as well as the ability to control the aperture setting with Pentax DSLRs.

    Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 reviews

85mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC Lens for Pentax K is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp for any price I am semi-pro with both Pentax and Nikon equipment. I thought this lens was very sharp from day one but Sunday I matched it with the well respected Nikon 105mm f2.8 pro lens. The Rokinon did excellent against this $$ lens, only loosing a bit in th corners, and that was hardly noticeable. I also preferred the color rendition of the Rokinon. So I am very happy I bought it considering its quality, balance, workmanship and specially sharpness. This lens will work with my future full frame Pentax and as a portrait lens an 85mm makes more sense that a 105mm in digital crop frames. By the way, I love B&H ! Keep up the good work !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, sharp and inexpensive I bought this lens to use as my go-to portrait lens on my K-5 IIs. Paired with image stabilization and automatic aperture control/EXIF reporting, it is very handy on Pentax. Focusing with magnified Live View is recommended for accurate results. It is well-made with a mix of metal and plastic on the body. The aperture and focus rings are tight and smooth. Optically, I was very surprised to see how sharp it is wide open at f/1.4. Color and contrast are pretty strong as well. Both get better towards f/4 where the lens reaches its peak. There is little to complain about. The lens cap is pretty cheap. Realize that shooting manual focus requires practice and patience. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Impressed I recently purchased my 1st DSLR (Pentax K-30) with a couple of kit lenses. While I have had some great results with them outside, I quickly realized I needed faster glass for indoor sports shooting and I'm on a budget. Rokinon met the need. I've never manually focused but quickly learned how to get some sharp images with this lense. What I did was put the camera in drive mode (6fps). I would focus on the subjects as best I could through the view-finder, start snapping pictures and slowly walk the focus through the subjects. Out of every burst, I got at least 1 very sharp image and sometimes 2. Honestly, I'm barely getting that level of sharpness with my other auto-focus lenses when shooting fast action. I've actually put some of my other lense on manual focus for fast action because of what I learned with this lense. Additionally, this is by FAR the highest quality lens I own now. I would definately buy another Rokinon lense! Very impressed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I am a semi-opro owning both Nikon and Pentax equipment. I bought the 85 mm for the Pentax as I use that camera more and more. It is very sharp and the colors and Bokeh are beautiful. You cannot go wrong for the price of this lens. I did not need it as I own the Kikon 105 mm for model shoots etc. But again, for the money this lens is outstanding, and it would be superb at any price really. Criticisms of the lens have revolved about the flimsy lens cap and hood. I solved that by buying a Sensei (generic) lens cap with the pinch buttons in the middle and now I can keep the lens hood on all the time with the cap on or off. And last but not LEAST.....the focus indicator led works on my Pentax when in focus!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality glass at a budget price, highly recommended! First off, this thing is hefty, but in a good way. You are getting 1.4 after all. For comparison, it's a little heaver than my DA 55-300. It's a joy to handle. The focus ring is smooth and nicely damped. The build quality is excellent in my opinion (I can't compare to DA*) and the plastic housing is of very similar composition to my K50 body, texture and all. IC at 1.4 is on par with my PANTAX-A 50mm 1.7 at 2.8. And it only gets sharper as you stop down. Fringing is noticeable in highlights at 1.4 but this was expected. It does have the A setting on the aperture ring so it'll work with all exposure modes. The lens hood is sturdy and made of the same plastic as the body, although it has a very very small amount of lateral play and can make a rattling sound if you shake you body (but why would you do that?). It locks on tight with no signs that it could be accidentally dislodged. I've been very impressed with it so far. The only caveat is the min focusing distance of about 3 ft.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack Sharp lens I've only had this lens for a short while, and have used it for a few portrait shots. I am very impressed. The build quality is excellent, especially considering the price. The focus ring operates very smoothly, something I cannot say about my Pentax DA* 16-50 f/2.8 which cost four times what I paid for the Rokinon. Nice bokeh, beautiful colors and contrast, tack sharp, and a great price. What's not to like?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens This lens is amazing. The sharpness and lack of vignetting is great. Since you probably already know a few of the common PROs for this lens I'll add a few CONS 1. The focus confirmation beep in the camera is very innaccurate - not necessarily a fault of the camera or lens since the focus sensors are often only rated to f/2.8 2. You'll likely end up using live-view a lot so you can zoom in to get the focus just right. 3. The lens focuses well past infinity. I don't know if this is to support infrared infinity focus though as there is no marking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Lens for a Bargain Price!! It is hard to find good quality brand new prime lens for less than $300 these days. This lens is what you were looking for if you are photographer on budget. This lens is made by Korean optic maker Samyang, same lens is sold by Vivitar and Bower but they are essentially the same lens, but this one from Rokinon is cheaper for some reason. The construction is solid and you can use auto exposure as lens has A-position. Also this lens while it is fast (f 1.4), is not that heavy. The lens hood is flimsy compared with my Zeiss 50mm's hood which is made of metal (well think about the price of this lens). After test shot, I extended hood using plastic sheet as original hood is not long enough for APS-sensor camera. Filter thread is made of plastic. You do not want to change filter often with this lens, but most likely most users will shoot without any filters or with protective filter attached all the time. Optics is very nice, sharp if you focus correctly, color rendition is good as well.
