How do you use the spacers with 5x7 paper. Anything special needed for the ribbon?
You can ONLY use 5x7 paper with the spacers and correct 5x7 dnp ds40 media/paper.... It CANNOT BE USED WITH DS40 6X8 MEDIA/PAPER

The spacers are only needed for the 5x7 roll paper. The 4x6 and 6x8 rolls are installed in the printer on the 6 width of the roll.

Dye sub printers prints and media don't come under the standard of fine art archival. But they will last for several years 10-100 depending how they are stored.

Can I install 4x6, 5x7, and 6x8 ribbons and paper in the DS80, and print with them, instead of buying a DS40?
No. The DS80, would only be able to print on 8x10 and 8x12 roll paper. But the DNP S80DX, would be able to print from a 4x8 - 8X12. I have attached that printer below.

Im using a mac 10.8.5 ...are drivers available?I only wish to print 5x7, do i need to order a tray? I only see a 6x8 or 4x6 tray option.
Yes there are drivers for Mac OSX 10.8.5. Also it uses the 6x8 output tray for the 5x7 prints as well.

I saw that the DS40 can print 2 4x6 prints from a single sheet of 6x8 paper. If you print an 8x10 on 8x12 paper on a DS80, will the DS80 cut the paper at 8x10 (wasting 2x8 of paper film), or will it print the whole 8x12 and require the owner to cut the 2x8 off manually?
when printing a 8x10 on 8x12 paper, it will cut the paper to the 8x10 size. but it still wastes the ink. you could print a 6x8 on 8x12 paper even, but your still wasting the ink.

The DS40 is a dye sub printer and the printer ribbon and paper are sold in matched sets. For 5x7 prints, B&H# DNDS405X7A contains 2 rolls which each yield 200 5x7 prints or 400 total.
