How do you use the spacers with 5x7 paper. Anything special needed for the ribbon?
You can ONLY use 5x7 paper with the spacers and correct 5x7 dnp ds40 media/paper.... It CANNOT BE USED WITH DS40 6X8 MEDIA/PAPER

Dye sub printers prints and media don't come under the standard of fine art archival. But they will last for several years 10-100 depending how they are stored.

Can I install 4x6, 5x7, and 6x8 ribbons and paper in the DS80, and print with them, instead of buying a DS40?
No. The DS80, would only be able to print on 8x10 and 8x12 roll paper. But the DNP S80DX, would be able to print from a 4x8 - 8X12. I have attached that printer below.

I saw that the DS40 can print 2 4x6 prints from a single sheet of 6x8 paper. If you print an 8x10 on 8x12 paper on a DS80, will the DS80 cut the paper at 8x10 (wasting 2x8 of paper film), or will it print the whole 8x12 and require the owner to cut the 2x8 off manually?
when printing a 8x10 on 8x12 paper, it will cut the paper to the 8x10 size. but it still wastes the ink. you could print a 6x8 on 8x12 paper even, but your still wasting the ink.

Do these rolls have end caps on both ends of the photo paper roll? Over time the paper (in a new box) curls and you can't place it on the guide roll anymore. I want to be sure that new rolls have end caps on both sides!
No this paper roll would not have a paper end caps on both sides.

How long will the paper last if you only use 50 pictures out of it at one event and have to wait to use it for another?
Typically paper like this has a pretty good shelf life. If you left it for up to a year we would recommend using fresh stock, but it should still be good for all applications if its left unused less than 1 year.
